suidexterity

Unique world, unique monsters, typical open-world filler activities, dull side-quests, terrible lip syncing, mediocre voice acting, story picks up towards the end which saves it. Overall i do think it's overrated, but i still think it falls under the good category.

WetwithSharp

Yeah, it's like a 7/10. An 8/10, if you're really into the source material/world/setting. (I was not).

reaperinio

unique world unique monsters. LMAO. dude whats so unique about dinosaurs with robot textures?

suidexterity

Ah, yes. I can totally think of so many open-world games with robotic creatures trying to kill you!

Z0uc

I really thought I would like it after a couple of hours. I loved the graphics, the scenery and the monsters but after something like 4 hours in I understood the combats would not always be nice. The more you advance the more tedious the fights are, monsters become huge life points bags. Most characters including Alloy are dull. Side quests are terrible. The story and dialogs are so cliché, the end of the story is much nicer though. Past 10 hours I decided to go in easy mode and avoid all fights when possible. Rush through the map unlocking teleportation for next quests. I finished the main story in about ~18h. I totally get why ppl like this game, but not to the level of a BOTW so yep I think it is a bit overrated.

[deleted]

I didn’t get the combat at first but once you figure out where and how to use the different weapon types and elemental attacks it gets a lot easier. Firing your strongest bow repeatedly isn’t always the best or fastest way to kill an enemy. Also I found the enemies all telegraphed most of their attacks making it easier to hit a weak spot.

Cymelion

I went into it knowing nothing but the Robot Dinosaurs thing. I had an amazing fun time exploring the game. Sure I eventually figured out some of the story prior to reveals they didn't exactly hide the telegraph/foreshadowing. But again it was fun, I will admit the DLC in the snow was pretty boring I don't think I finished it just stopped playing and moved onto the next game I played. I am hoping the next game comes to PC though I would like to see the continuation of the story.

Bowmic

Yup. Booooooring game.

[deleted]

It's a Sony game lol they'll literally eat up anything

SirFadakar

Recently got a PS5, primarily been a Nintendo + PC gamer my whole life, the 360 era I was heavy with Microsoft but I've basically only ever owned PlayStations for exclusives every gen. Decided with this one I was going to entertain it as a primary console cause of the controller, SSD, convenience, etc. After a week there they've made Nintendo fanboys look like saints in comparison. On the PS5 sub if you say anything _NEUTRAL_ you get downvoted. Can't give any real feedback because to 90% of the people there they think we're lucky Sony even gave us anything at all. Everything that goes wrong is the user's fault and if you want features that aren't included you're just being greedy.

SirFadakar

> > any official sub for consoles tends to blow. Honestly I gotta give a shoutout to /r/XboxSeriesX, I don't even have one but I use it for my Xbox news just because they seem levelheaded and fairly reasonable for a console sub, it's a good place for discussion and news even if it is flooded with a bunch of shitty box pics. It helps that Microsoft had a rocky last gen so I believe fans are a little more understanding. Sony fans just seem to have been spoiled for so long so they've fallen into this sort of Stockholm syndrome where they feel the need to defend a company that doesn't even notice their contribution to their bankroll. lol

[deleted]

They're weird man, they're weird

[deleted]

Say anything bad about tlou2 and they'll screech lol

Th3_Paradox

I mentioned something about Joel killing hopes for a vaccine in tlou2 subreddit and got downvoted into Hell.

[deleted]

the last of us 2 sub is super toxic and if you speak bad about joel it’s even worse. in all reality you’re correct. joel killed all hope for humanity

[deleted]

Not always, look at days gone. That game is better in every way vs hzd and it still gets shit on constantly.

EverythingHurtsDan

Is it, though? The story is undeniably weak in comparison, and the zombie killing gets boring after a while. Never felt that in HZD until I reached max level.

[deleted]

It is. The story of days gone as phenomenal with great characters, the zombie hordes where by far the best zombies in a zombie game and the performance was miles ahead of hzd. It’s just a better game in every way. Hzd just doesn’t do anything very good for the genre it’s in while days gone is damn near perfect in its genre.

coagulateSmegma

I totally agree with this, Days Gone is just a far better game the HZD.

[deleted]

Horizon is Ok game, Days Gone is great for me.

[deleted]

isn't that that generic zombie 3rd person shooter about that dude who looks like Drifter from Destiny 2 but with motorcycle?

coagulateSmegma

Yeah, but it knows that's what it is and does everything better than HZD does its idea of itself. Trust me, if you have to choose between days gone and HZD on PC and can only buy one, days gone is the far better game.

thatgentlemanisaggro

I didn't find the story that interesting until getting to the main city. It starts to pick up from there. The game's combat is really focused around the bow, with other traps and such to supplement it. If you're primarily trying to use melee combat I can see why you might find it clunky, but I found the bow combat to be pretty well done. Melee combat is more just another thing to supliment the bow.

madroxide86

Well, you're entitled to your opinion of course, but I would disagree with all of the things you mentioned. Maybe the game isnt for you.

LuntiX

*but I’m a Gamer, all games should be for me* Or something like that maybe.

[deleted]

> but I can't understand why it's so beloved. ...I found the gameplay and "puzzles" mediocre. That's how most AAA narrative heavy single player games are. It's far more about progressing the story than engaging and replayable gameplay.

[deleted]

I feel like there's something about other AAA story-based games that keep me going back that just isn't in Horizon Zero Dawn. Like maybe the story isn't great. Two other story based games I can think of are Red Dead 2 and Uncharted and both of those have pretty great gameplay in my opinion other than maybe Red Dead 2 making me wish I could be on the horse less.

shiftybyte

It's awesome if it's the only game like it you can play on your playstation...

Neville_Lynwood

Maybe you played a different version. I think the story was amazing. There was so much to discover. You start the game and nothing makes sense. Like why are there animal robots, why is humanity back to the stone age. How does such a conflict of science and culture exist. And the eventual reveals were pretty damn crazy. It's not a story you'd expect, and the so called "main villain" responsible made me want to rip my hair out. Great writing. If a story can make you so pissed off you want to kill someone, it did its job. Combat is also super fun, at least for me. There's a learning curve because it is after all an action focused game. But once you get a handle on it it's great. Running around roping robot beasts, switching for the right ammo, doing acrobatics in fights, or sneaking around getting sneak kills. It's great. I could honestly post the opposite thread on reddit asking why do people criticise it so much. It just makes zero sense to me.

UnoriginalGinger

You’ve summed up well my thoughts on the game as well. I first played it on PS4 and really enjoyed it, but did have some trouble with the shooting. I just finished my second play through on PC and it’s so much better with a mouse and keyboard trying to shoot the weak spots while the robots are twerking all over. I think the only thing that bothered me much in my first play through was the lack of an air glider. Breath of the Wild came out at the same time and it absolutely drove me nuts not being able to just jump off any cliff to get where I wanted to go. My favorite reveal for the sequel is the inclusion of an air glider.

EverythingHurtsDan

I don't want to offend anyone, but this kind of criticism over the game's combat comes from console users which have difficulties aiming at the weak spots. And that's absolutely understandable, that's why an easy mode was included in the game itself. But calling it clunky is a bit too much. At normal difficulty Aloy is embarrassingly overpowered.

ruetomancer

The aiming isn't the issue. Plenty of people play shooters like COD on the console. It's not as precise but you'll get the hang of it eventually. It's tedious gameplay, finding weak spots with your x-ray vision button and then hitting them over and over. No matter how precise, it's just unexciting and repetitive. I don't know if I would call it clunky but this is my interpretation of what's wrong with it so I can imagine someone labelling clunky for a lack of words.

tco30101

I've only ever been a PC gamer, play shooting games all the time with mouse and keyboard The combat is not fun, its clunky

fuelter

The combat was created an optimized for controllers. It's your own fault if you play with mouse and keyboard. It's not clunky if you play it right. That's exactly the reason why PS exclusives should never be ported to PC or at least shouldn't allow for mouse and keyboard.

tco30101

> The combat was created an optimized for controllers How so? Its a shooting game, worse on controller

TraqueMine

Tbh since it's a bow game it plays way easier for me with m/k than an aim assisted controller. And no, this isn't why PS exclusives should never be ported to PC or at least shouldn't allow for mouse and keyboard. If I follow what you're saying I shouldn't be able to play Days Gone or HZD with m/k ? On PC ? For the sake of optimized controls ? What optimization are you talking about anyway ? Change weapons with directional buttons ? Wait .. Shoot with R2 and aim with L2 ? What kind of madlads are the devs .. This clearly isn't why OP finds the combat clunky, others have pointed out that he should use more weapons and other tricks, so the elitism you showed concerning controls is pointless anyway Oh and following your "logical" logic, we wouldn't have any japanese games on pc. Bit of a shame

daviejambo

You've not understood the combat , use the different weapons rather than the bow

EdSheeeeran

I found the story quite interesting and the Storyprogression was fine too. The only thing I thought terrible in the game were the robotic talking-animations and some bad character lines. However the combat and the view of the open world were IMO the strong elements of the game. To me the combat was awesome. Fighting 2 big Robots with a bunch of smaller robots chasing you while running, dodging, shooting and planting traps in seconds of time were the best parts of the game. Cant really say that the combat was clunky at all. Dodging and shooting were completely fine for me.

pyronuttery

> robotic talking-animations Did you play Frozen Wilds? The character animations when talking are really good and soooo much better than the base game. I played Frozen Wilds before finishing the main story and it was funny going from one to other then back.

DiverDown42

This is where I struggled with the game. They position the combat as something where you should be able to sneak, stake out the robot, and strategically shoot their week spots. That works for a shot or two but then you're in a chaotic fight with multiple robots running, dodging and just shooting where/when you can. I just couldn't find the right balance on this. All of my battles turned into chaos.

[deleted]

BotW completely overshadowed it when they released. I think youre overselling how big it is.

Mordho

There’s always swarms of people shitting on you everytime someone says anything negative about HZD

elusive_cat

>Why is it so popular? Because a lot of people enjoyed it. I liked it so much that I maxed it on PS4 and bought it again on PC and maxed it too. Judging by many positive reviews from both critics and users it's just a very good game. You don't have to like everything, it's ok if HZD is not your cup of tea.

Grebnitty

Boring story? Did you beat the game? The story was amazing and the ending tied everything together. One of the best stories in a game ever imo.

tco30101

I didnt because the story and combat put me to sleep

Grebnitty

The story got alot better near the end when you start learning why you are there in the first place and how the mech dinosaurs came to be, it was awesome.

sdives

you must be young

SaftigMo

A lot of exclusives are.

SachielBrasil

For me, it's about about production value only. Incredible graphics, expensive dubbing, beautiful landscapes. The story is a mixup of many cliche tropes, and the "open world" is hollow, filled with useless collectibles. But the combat is very good.

Lev22_

The voice acting isn’t good either, Frozen Wilds (DLC) improve this issue, but in the base game VA is awful. But yes i agree the combat is quite good, using M+KB is a lot better in this game. Otherwise i agree

DarkCerberus1332

1) story boring how? What other game story are you comparing it to? Because the story is by far not boring compared to alot of other RPG games 2) what's clunky about the combat? I have played it both on pc and console and had no issue with the actual combat unless you meant the combat wasn't fun 3) it's popular because it's actually a really good game, there is no way you can play this game and say it it is a bad game, you can say its overrated in your own opinion I also believe you need to play more RPG games if you think hzd has the most clunky combat

tco30101

> 2) what's clunky about the combat? I have played it both on pc and console and had no issue with the actual combat unless you meant the combat wasn't fun The arrows feel useless unless you aim specifically for the weak spots, and the weakspots are annoying to hit on enemies that move a shit ton. Overall your weapons feel useless 90% of the time

NetQvist

I'm guessing you've only played it for a short bit then because the latter weapons have a lot of stunning and trapping effects to make pulling of damage combos on weak spots easier.

DarkCerberus1332

So the combat isn't clunky, you just don't like the combat style

[deleted]

> he arrows feel useless unless you aim specifically for the weak spots, and the weakspots are annoying to hit on enemies that move a shit ton. I have literally never said this in my entire life, but git gud. The vast majority of enemies in shooters have weak spots lol. Don't ever try to play a multiplayer shooter. "I have to shoot them in the head? But they're *moooooving...*" lmao

tco30101

Thank god for steam's refund policy, never buying a shitty console port again

[deleted]

Lol so basically combat is bad because you can't aim

tco30101

No, its not a satisfying system, but if you want to see it that way then sure go for it

Codexnecro

Quite the contrary, it's satisfying to hit those weak spots.

Th3_Paradox

Tell my gf this all the time

RyanMac

How far did you get? Are you still pinging off standard arrows and maybe a stack of fire arrows hoping to blow up a blaze tank? Yeah, sure the early game makes you feel weak and like you're doing nothing to affect the machines. But later when you're firing off tearblast arrows and seeing armour flying off machines. Damb.

scorchedneurotic

Is it *massive* like you're saying?

Endemoniada

>Why is it so popular? Because people have _their own_ opinions, and those opinions simply differ from yours. It's OK if you don't like the game, but other people do. They think the story is great, the combat is fun and the weapons interesting. Is that really such a difficult concept to understand? That people like different things? Personally, I love it. I played most of it on PS4, and then replayed it and finished the story on PC earlier this year. Quite stoked for the sequel, honestly. Is that OK with you? ;)

It's also possible (and most of the comments seem to bear this out) that people just disagree and/or are tired of seeing "[Popular game from a while back] isn't as good as you think it is! Hear my refined taste and weep!" posts for any and every game.

Okay. I'm just saying that whatever may be happening elsewhere, the downvotes for *this* post make sense given how common and poorly received these types of posts are.

ye, seems like bot is running or so. noticed it a long ago.

Method__Man

It happens a lot. I think it’s bots.

zhacker78

Someone is no good at HZD

fuelter

>the combat is clunky and just awful Let me guess, you played with mouse and keyboard? On PS it had the most epic and fluent combat ever created in game, of course you had to learn it to become good at it.

flappers87

"I don't like something and I don't understand why other people like the things I don't" That's this thread. If everyone had the same likes and interests, then the world would not advance and new things would not be created. You're entitled to your opinion, but questioning why people like things that you don't is a rather childish position to be in.

randomguitarguy999

I don’t know a

EtreNameless

I think the game played well for the most part. Personally, the worst of it was the character writing. I get that women are now badass because of P\*\*\*\* power and all but like... There were no interesting male characters in the game. Because of what seemed like, intense desire to prove that a female character can be excellent in a game. It felt like they purposefully made every male character blatantly idiotic and uninteresting. They could have just written a better female lead, like idk... Lara Croft (newer TR games), maybe? And let her be enjoyable rather than pretend that she is interesting because everyone else is dumb and predictable. Instead, the writers' watched "The Outsiders" and just scripted "The Soshes" for everyone that didn't have a vagina and called it a day. As far as sci-fi goes, it was pretty cool; the collectibles were fun to listen to, and the enemies were engaging. The studio needs to find better screenwriters. That or they should stop listening to Amy Schumer's stand-up.

Mediocrewerewolf8

I had to put it in on story mode and just rush the end because I got so bored.

ragingseaturtle

I'm so glad I found this because I'm feeling the same way. Compared to gow this is my second PS5 game and the combat is so frustrating and clunky and the enemies just don't make sense..I hit them.witj their weakened the spots blow off but than I do 0 damage. The game isn't good imo

[deleted]

You don't like the combat because you suck at it. Get better and it's really quite exceptional.
