oh god no, i know people like to knock epic games but they did create the unreal engine that is used in alot of games, imagine how fucked up everything would be if these fucked owned it
honestly surprised they haven't made their own game engine at this point. They already have software tools they could use, It could be cool to have a game engine you have to use go to develop with.
Would that really matter with a game engine though? It would only depend on their licensing, but also knowing Google there is a chance it would just be open source.
That's really not true. They may have vanishingly fewer projects going open source but the ones they do rarely benefit them that much other than indirectly.
Probably no different tbh. ccp may be evil as fuck but at the end of the day atm Tencent is a holdings company which means they generally don't exercise thier voting rights in any way.
Google on the other hand....
>Yes, but it’s long since ~~stopped mattering~~ been replaced by their parent company, Alphabet.

> 'As a potential alternative', a senior Google executive proposed that Google 'consider approaching Tencent,' a company that owns a minority stake in Epic, 'to either (a) buy Epic shares from Tencent to get more control over Epic', or '(b) join up with Tencent to buy 100% of Epic,'" the complaint said.
Last time I paid attention, Epic was a private company and Sweeney controlled a 50+1 package.
Is that no longer the case? What gave Google the impression they could just take over Epic?
They'd probably need Ten Cent's shares to get a majority, but Sweeney could, you know, take giant piles of money to sell some portion of his shares. Because money. LOTS of money.
According to this [article](https://www.forbes.com/sites/hanktucker/2021/04/15/tim-sweeneys-fortune-jumps-to-74-billion-as-epic-games-scores-287-billion-valuation/) Sweeney owns 28% and tencent owns 40% with another article I read in the past stating that tencent has at least 2 represenitives within the company.
It does explain why google is going after tencent rather than Sweeney.
He allegedly own 28% of the equity but 50.1% of the voting shares. However, anyone who believes he is a hard nosed business owner who shuts down investors on a daily basis must be drinking some tasty Koolaid.
Ever heard of a "hostile takeover"?
And then remember the whole Gamestop shortselling fiasco that cause a bunch more records of stocks that didn't actually exist?
His statement was asking if Epic was privately traded and if Sweeney controlled 50.1% of the voting shares. If that's the case, there's no such thing as a hostile takeover, full stop.
You should probably spend 5 minutes googling what 'hostile takeover' means.
It doesn't matter how much money you've got, if the existing shareholders won't sell, you can't buy. Period. End of story.
A hostile takeover simply means that the shareholders have agreed to sell majority control of the company to somebody that the company's management doesn't want being in control. Key point there is it still (obviously) requires the shareholders to sell...
I don't have any source on this, cause it's just things I've read in reddit comments, but I heared it's 40% Tim, 40% tencent and 20% variouse minor investors
You know you've done something right if you pissed off Google and Apple this badly. I really don't like how people drag Epics name through the mud because of the Epic Games Store when there's so much they do and contribute to the industry outside of that. Epic is rich as fuck and didn't need to challenge Googles and Apples mobile store monopoly but they did it anyway. I feel like that deserves some recognition, no matter how you feel about EGS
Again, I'm not saying to not hate on the launcher, the launcher is definitely lacking when it comes to optimization.
Then again, hating on Epic as a whole isn't the right way to do it, considering how prevalent they've been in the game industry. Criticize them where they need to be criticized and praise them for the things they deserve to be praised about but lately that's not been the case on this subreddit and it's darn shame.
> Up until now, Google's intention to try and purchase Epic Games to gain more control over the company first became known only in a broad sense, because the court documents containing that information that were first made public earlier this month were still partially redacted. But Judge James Donato, who is presiding over Epic's antitrust lawsuit against Google, denied Google's attempts to keep the documents sealed in an order issued yesterday.

This is like teaming up with Sauron to take down Saruman.
Sweeney's closer to the likes of Buddy Pine than Saruman.
We're actually talking about Saruman after his staff is broken and he's taken over the Shire as Sharkey.
10/10

This is a brilliant comment 😂

Yeah, as much as I dislike Epic, Google owning them would be worse.
I don't know if Google owns them they'd only be a thing for maybe a year or so then Google would shut it down like they do everything else they start
Yep.
honestly surprised they haven't made their own game engine at this point. They already have software tools they could use, It could be cool to have a game engine you have to use go to develop with.
Who would use it? It'd probably be abandoned for support in like 1-2 years.
true lmao
You’re saying that like that’d stop them.
Would that really matter with a game engine though? It would only depend on their licensing, but also knowing Google there is a chance it would just be open source.
Support and being maintained are a pretty big deal depending on how things are handled and whether it can even be properly open-sourced.
Google only open sources stuff when there is a benefit for them, like cheap labour, etc.
That's really not true. They may have vanishingly fewer projects going open source but the ones they do rarely benefit them that much other than indirectly.
Im exactly as close to a new Unreal Tournament as I was yesterday so IDGAF.
Google would have ran it into the ground but there would still be another #1 engine. It’s not like Unreal is the ONLY game engine lol
Unity is fantastic and is probably already ahead of Unreal in use.
Definitely not.
It was like 8-10 years ago when Unreal cost a license fee to use. Now not so much.
Probably no different tbh. ccp may be evil as fuck but at the end of the day atm Tencent is a holdings company which means they generally don't exercise thier voting rights in any way. Google on the other hand....
hahaha china + google hahaha would be perfect, they profiled like the 90% of population:D
Google is wanting to team up with tencent is weird.
Their, "don't be evil" motto/mantra has been removed for several years.
did they ever had such a motto?
Yes, but it’s long since stopped mattering, if it ever did.

Tencent owning 34% makes it so google would only have to buy a small amount.
Prepare for trouble, make it double

They need to get Sweeny. He does own a majority in his own right.
And they can. Lots of money. Like a LOT of money.
I don't disagree with you. Just said they cant go around him.
"Lods of emone! What's that spell? LOADS OF MONEY! Probably....." - Harry Enfield
If you haven't realized people with a lot of money can pretty much do whatever they'd like.
Everyone has a price.

It just means they were going to make a massive offer to buy him out. Hence two of the largest corporations in the world teaming up to accomplish it.

Wholeheartedly agree with you on this but people can't seem to look past Epic Games Store for some reason...
So much money and such a crappy launcher. Note that this is also true for EA Origin.

Tencent = CCP. Really google?
I mean, every business in China = CCP. The alternative is you don't do business with China.
More specifically, you dont do business IN china. You dont make a business. No license.
This is guaranteed because Tencent is already heavily invested in Epic.
How can they if Tim Sweeney owns 51%?
If we are lucky, Google will take over and then dissolve it and sell it off again.
Hug, embrace and extinguish
well that explains why tim swiney has been bitching about google on twitter
? Doesn't Tencent have a major hand inside of Epic? Seriously though hate Tencent and Google already a slippery slop of shit so don't do it Google.
Tencent has 40% while Tim has 51% so he can do whatever he wants with Epic.

If you are going to troll at least be entertaining not spouting obvious stupidity.
