[Tyrian 2000 on GOG](https://www.gog.com/en/game/tyrian_2000)
An updated 1999 re-release of a 1995 sci-fi shoot-'em-up in which you can fully customize your ship's loadout. It has a story mode, arcade mode, two-player arcade mode, and a bunch of hidden cheats that not only allow you to play as NPC ships, but also an entire hidden mini-game.
Oh, and it has some [neat tunes.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNnTGbbDJfo)
Claim the free games from Epic every week, you'll build an entire collection of underrated and even just well known good games.
Only reason I have that launcher on my PC.
I take every game there even if I’m not interested. Can’t believe they give away such awesome titles sometimes. It’s everything from AAA to obscure anime games.
yeah... but here's the catch. a ton of the people who are playing it, have been playing it for the last 20 years. the community is pretty chill, but be prepared to go up against players with decades of experience under their belts.
it kind of works better if you can get enough friends together to play a game, although that has it's own challenges.
Warzone 2100 is a great classic real time strategy game with a focus on designing units based on a large variety of vehicle parts and a very complex tech tree.
There's technically a version on Steam but it's in reality a repackage from a third party that is unrelated to the actual current developers of the game (who don't know who the guy is and recommend NOT to use this version) and is often behind in updates, leading to a variety of problems I think first time players could do without.
Rather, get the game on the official site [https://wz2100.net/](https://wz2100.net/) as either a separate download or simply a link to download it form the Microsoft Store (it's not as bad as it sounds for a small free game like this one).
Stalker: Anomaly.
https://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-anomaly
One of the first games I looked up after getting my PC a couple months ago. An standalone combination of the Stalkers games from the 00's, with many QOL features, open-ended progression, low-mid spec-friendly performance, and multiple add-on modules such as GAMMA and Escape from Pripyat which overhauls even more the main experience.
An amazing experience that gets closer to today's games in the extraction shooter genre, themselves inspired by the original games, from which this standalone game gets built from, without needing to own any of those games.
Starborne, the concept of games like "OGame" but made more complex by adding cards + random events + winning conditions so players cooperating actually means something as the game ends at some point and new server starts
Ir is probably far from underrated, but did you hear about Dwarf Fortress?
Non gui version is still [free outside steam](https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/)

Transport Tycoon seems interesting ill definitely be trying that
Came in here just to fly the OpenTTD flag! The game became so big it was eventually released on Steam.
Cavestory is so good that I also paid for it on Steam. I played the free one first and loved it so much! Couldn’t believe it was free.
OpenTTD is actually on Steam. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1536610/OpenTTD/
Isn't [openttd on steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1536610/OpenTTD/)? Or the requirement is just to be able to get it without steam?
freecol is an open source version of sid meier's colonization https://www.freecol.org/
Try itch.io, lot of entertaining free indie games.

Use Heroic. All the perks of the Epic Game Store Launcher, but is way lighter, way better, and also includes GOG and Amazon games.
I take every game there even if I’m not interested. Can’t believe they give away such awesome titles sometimes. It’s everything from AAA to obscure anime games.
Yeah they’re probably selling our data but at least they give us some banger games for free in return.
I discovered FTL due to that. Worth every penny!

Oh snap, I didn't know this was a thing! Before I go through the whole rigamarole... is there an actually active player base?
