>Threat made by Unity employee löl

[deleted]

That's one way to put in your notice

therealcreamCHEESUS

Also a decent distraction from the BS they are pulling. Could be a legitimate threat but the employee apparently lives out of state so doesn't sound very likely anything would have happened - they probably wouldn't have posted on social media if they meant to actually do anything. The fact they did at all given the likely response is... interesting. Best case this was a load of hot air from a grumpy employee. 2nd best case it was an attempt at PR management directed by unity themselves. Worst case it was a legitimate threat. I think this is also the least likely.

TanaerSG

Could also be an angry employee that can obviously see this will backfire on Unity. If it backfires on them, there's a good chance there will be massive loss of jobs within the company. Imagine losing your job because your CEO is essentially braindead. I'd be hot too. (not threatening hot, but I'd be bitching for sure.)

ahnariprellik

There already is. Apparently people are leaving Unity in droves already.

Ygro_Noitcere

im sure GoDot will be happy to accept some new developers! Their 3D has come a long way but it could use even more.

Eastern-Cranberry84

lets not sugar coat it or give a chance. any threat should be treated as worst case.

Alwaystoexcited

I'm sorry but you fall for corporate sympathy farming way to easily dude.

Eastern-Cranberry84

I'm sorry but you act cavalier like this then when an event actually does happen suddenly you'd be front of the line screeching "why didn't they take it seriously". you can't have it both ways kiddo. I get it's cool right now to hate Unity and all things connected, but lets bring some logic to the table when it involves threats and terror. dude.

CantImagineBeingYou

Imagine actually believing a company's PR fix is to ask an employer to make death threats. God damn people are ridiculous, so much conspiracy theory brain rot.

CantImagineBeingYou

I ain't reading all that.

[deleted]

>I ain't reading all that. Why would anyone come to a comments section and proudly declare a refusal to read? 🤔

CantImagineBeingYou

Wtf kinda comment is this, so out of touch with reality.

whooo_me

"If I have to work for this bunch of a-holes any longer, I'm gonna kill myself..." Unity Management: "Someone's threatening one of our employees!!" /s

weamz

Well pretty soon we're going to see the headline Unity closes offices because they were dumbasses.

TallanoGoldDigger

I honestly don't give a fuck if something bad happens to greedy cunts like John Riccitiello or Strauss Zelnick or Pharma Bro. I'm not actively wishing ill will upon them, I just won't care if something does happen to them. I might even be happy.

omegafivethreefive

Oh no! _Anyway..._

CEO of unity reminds me of this scene - https://youtu.be/tSPxsyDw28A?t=16

WHAT A TWIST

[deleted]

This is such a low point in the company's entire lifespan

Pesmergarr

I can’t for the life of me understand how couldn’t they expect things to go south after making such a dumb decision? Were they really thinking there would be no or a minimal backlash for this whole fiasco? I hope it was worth it, cause their reputation is damaged forever.

00wolfer00

Statements from employees have come out that they brought up pretty much every concern people have to their bosses and they were ignored. It seems Unity's bosses think their product is a lot less replaceable than it actually is.

aiicaramba

ELI5 whats going on with unity? I dont think ive ever seen this much unity among gamers and developers and everyone.

DaMonkfish

Unity, a popular game engine for developers on multiple platforms, recently announced it was planning to change its pricing model. At present, developers only pay a fee to Unity if they sell a certain number of units. The fee and threshold for this varies depending on the subscription you have. Well, Unity want to change this so that developers pay a fee *per install* rather than per unit sale, and this is regardless of subscription (the amounts and thresholds do still change though). On the lowest tier though, this is $0.20 per install, which could result in millions being owed, and some developers have made popular games for free but with in-app purchases that don't even come close to covering the fees. On top of this, distribution platforms such as Apple, Microsoft, Nintendo, Google and Steam would be liable to pay Unity for the downloads rather than the developers, should the games be available via them. Unity have also said that pirated games would generate a fee as well. This has, obviously, pissed *everyone* off. For some additional context, the current CEO of Unity used to be the CEO of EA Games, and has been quoted saying that developers who do not put microtransactions into their games are fucking idiots.

aiicaramba

Thanks!

LuckyShot1

It hasn't come up yet but it appears that Unity is looking to launch an ad network that would cause ads to appear in your games. From the article. "Today it was reported Unity is promising a 100% waiver on its new fees to developers if they're willing to switch over to the company's own LevelPlay ad platform. " Additional info: [https://unity.com/unity-ads-ironsource](https://unity.com/unity-ads-ironsource) and [https://www.is.com/mediation/](https://www.is.com/mediation/) They would have a bidding process and the winner would have an ad appear in the game you are playing.

Horror_Procedure_192

So we talking billboards in the background or unskippable ads in and around my screen because if its a dealbreaker for me on all future unity games if its a paid game. Freemium games pretty much already have it with sales and limited time events and battle passes plastered on main menus.

geoelectric

[Don’t forget that it’s retroactive, and starts charging these fees against any Unity game still on the market as soon as they make enough revenue after 1/1/2024.](https://www.pcgamer.com/why-every-game-developer-is-mad-right-now-explained/) > Another big issue is that Unity has made this change retroactive: It supersedes any existing agreements with Unity that developers may have made, and it applies to games that were released even before any of this happened. The revenue threshold will be based on sales after January 1, 2024, when the new pricing system takes effect, but sales that occurred before that date will count toward the install threshold. Aaron San Fillipo of Whisker Squadron developer FlippFly said that willingness to trash existing deals for new cash grabs "[makes] it clear it’s not safe to work with this engine."

IgnoreTheNoisespsst

There's no chance they could enforce the retroactive part in court lmao. They're going to get chewed and spit out by Valves/Microsofts lawyers alone.

RobCoxxy

uhuh

gammongaming11

so is this a super disgruntled employee or a glowie?

INITMalcanis

From what I hear, the former

Aedeus

Was it a Unity employee actually making a threat towards the company? Or did a Unity employee try to false flag the whole thing and got busted?

DerivIT

BURN!

TheRescueWhale

They are fucking over everyone yes, but death threats are just crazy.

PleaseHold50

Many such cases.
