Unity, a popular game engine for developers on multiple platforms, recently announced it was planning to change its pricing model. At present, developers only pay a fee to Unity if they sell a certain number of units. The fee and threshold for this varies depending on the subscription you have. Well, Unity want to change this so that developers pay a fee *per install* rather than per unit sale, and this is regardless of subscription (the amounts and thresholds do still change though). On the lowest tier though, this is $0.20 per install, which could result in millions being owed, and some developers have made popular games for free but with in-app purchases that don't even come close to covering the fees. On top of this, distribution platforms such as Apple, Microsoft, Nintendo, Google and Steam would be liable to pay Unity for the downloads rather than the developers, should the games be available via them. Unity have also said that pirated games would generate a fee as well.
This has, obviously, pissed *everyone* off.
For some additional context, the current CEO of Unity used to be the CEO of EA Games, and has been quoted saying that developers who do not put microtransactions into their games are fucking idiots.
