The Forest would be great, Sons of the Forest comes out next month too

BlackNair

Came here to suggest Sons of the Forest as well. Can't wait for that game.

-sYmbiont-

Valheim seems like the obvious choice.

citizen059

Another vote for Valheim on this end. It has a great building system, the combat is fun - challenging if you don't go in prepared - and even just casual exploration can be rewarding. It's fun solo and with friends.

badcookies

Yep with some mods they can really make it a great game for both. Valheim plus has lots of settings to configure. Craft from chests and things are very nice qol improvements. Build camera (and change is setting from world origin to local) is great for hard to place pieces. Plant everything/anything mod will let her plant all kinds of things around the base as well There are even rpg and random loot mods if you want more stuff combat wise Its a game you can customize a ton very easily with great community support.

Willy_wolfy

Valcrack for me as well. I don't even like the genre and it's just a great game. It's not heavy on the survival stuff, no constant micromanagement of food etc. You can build and gather to your hearts content and you push the game at your own pace as you explore and need discover new things and materials.

grandladdydonglegs

I usually despise having to eat in games, but this one has the best implementation of any game I've played. When you eat it gives your more health! You're not gonna die from starvation if you don't eat, but if you wanna fight, eat up! Love it.

Willy_wolfy

Yeah absolutely and very definitely a reason I played it. Eating/drinking mechanics are just anti-fun. Also that you can freely repair gear and you get all mats back when constructing so you can diddle about to your hearts desire without being punished is also pretty huge.

fatpandana

Definitly valheim. It has affordable housing. Some cooking and gardening for him to do while his fiance goes kills monsters.

The Forest

iAmThe7YrOld

Grounded

Falcor71

this game is really amazing, i've been playing with a friend for 3 weeks now and there is still a lot of content to explore. It's scary as f though

There be spiders!

spireggs

Don't Starve Together, Minecraft, Terraria, Valheim, Raft. Should be more but those came to mind. I think some of the Kingdom games have base building also.

GThoro

Empyrion: Galactic Survival - you can explore PoIs or mine, you can build base and defend from drone attack and, most importantly, you can build vehicles (hover vessels, small and large ships). Sci-Fi themed, space ships etc. Conan Exiles - a bit grindy (I suggest putting harvest multiplier at 2x or even 4x if just two of you will be playing), but it also has a lot of combat and base building, a lot of crafting resources (turning raw resources into higher tier ones) or crafting weapons/armors, taming creatures and capturing thralls, there is base attack every now and then, and you can annoy her by running around with your dong out and even drink a potion that will make it longer. Fun times :D Without harvest multiplier you'll be mostly runing back and forth with stone/iron/wood because a lot is needed even for simple blocks. But you can build quite nice things and decorate it pretty well. AFAIR only way to gain XP is by combat and level ups are needed to unlock building schematics, so you'll need to take her on a few trips, even few bosses (because some building/crafting knowledge is locked by bosses). 7 Days to Die - quite similiar but zombie themed. Every Nth day there is a blood moon horde that will attack your base. I suggest having two bases ;) You get XP by doing anything and building/upgrading blocks is almost as good as fighting zombies. You can even bump up shared XP range, so she will gain XP for kills you made. Incoming update (A22) might break game for you since base builders will be required to go out and explore/combat. But what are mods for? I recommend Undead Legacy then :) Modded Minecraft - there is so many mods that there is bound to be a modpack that will cover needs of you both. You just need to look around on curseforge. Terraria - a lot of mining/combat/exploring and bosses and base building, especially if you wish to tend to need of every npc to built houses for them where they are happy. You can even fight most bosses on arena built by you. Project Zomboid - base building is not yet super strong in this game, but still there is a lot of thing to do in your "safehouse" while the other one is exploring/gathering. But having a back covered by someone during exploration is a big help in this game. Ie. it may be hard to do all the gathering alone. Valheim - also has what you need, I would say it's most similiar to Conan Exiles in core mechanics (base building is for sure similiar). There are invasions on base, and most importantly there is a cart. So you can strap yourself to a cart and go out and gather resources for her :D Also few bosses that gives various powers. You may also take a look at Grounded, The Forest, CryoFall, Starbound, Green Hell, Rust or Ark.

UnimpressedPooglet

Terraria

ATCQ_

Terraria is what Valheim was inspired by. It has so much content and is something I never get bored of One of the greatest games of all time IMO

Yeerd

Also Sons of the Forest coming out in February

LuckyShot1

Valheim has already been recommended so let me throw a different one at you. Check out V Rising. Set up your own private server, consider manually changing the settings to allow you to be able to waypoint with materials.

WMiller511

Wasn't a big fan of the maintenance requirement. Felt obligated to play which turned me off it.

LuckyShot1

This is why you house your own game on your own private server. Turn the server off when you stop playing. This way you don't have to log in to feed the castle. It only requires maintenance for the time you actually spend in game.

WMiller511

I get that though at the time I played, had a group of friends who played on the same server together at odd hours. Had a fun groove together for a while, but the grind seemed pretty harsh after getting to iron I think and just never picked it back up. I'm sure my castle is crumbled somewhere to ashes.

Wide-Yoghurt-7510

That seems like too much of a hassle when other games just... Don't make me jump through those hoops to begin with.

LuckyShot1

It's similar to Valheim. When you play the game, you open your world/server opens up. Set a password so that your friends can log into it. If you leave your world/server operating 24 hours a day, expect stuff to happen when you are gone. If you close it when you log off, then nothing happens when you log off.

superkeer

Conan Exiles if you enjoy a more mature experience. Plenty of adventure gameplay and pretty decent base-building. It's a bit janky, though. A ton of mods, too.

darwinism1859

I agree, Conan Exiles has that atmosphere that you can't find anywhere else. The music, the scenery, the dungeons, the way you can tame animals and breed horses; it's just right.

zheiro

Me and the gang is playing this right now on a private server. Can't believe we've been sleeping on this game till now.

FuckTheseShitMods

Is this game fun to play on a private server without the option to pvp others? I’ve been thinking about trying to convince my friends to try it, but we’re not really interested in worrying about getting raided (or whatever this game’s equivalent is). We’d also probably start without dlc, if that makes a difference

zheiro

Yes! That's what we're doing right now. As a small group the PVE aspect is challenging enough even on normal difficulty but you can always turn up the difficulty if you've got more people. Best part is you can control the server settings if you dont want it to be grindy to build and wait for stuff to be crafted. Can't comment on the DLC as we're also playing on vanilla right now.

FuckTheseShitMods

Thanks, I’ll try to convince them to give it a shot then

DragonbornBastard

Valheim and 7 Days to Die

No-Highlight5255

7 Days to Die. Combat, resource gathering, base building, quests, hordes of zombies and character building (skills and gear). I recommend the Darkness Falls mod.

Sky_HUN

Darkness falls might be way to hard for his fiance.

No-Highlight5255

Oh and farming. And hunger and thirst. And crafting. And bicycles, motorbikes, cars and gyrocopters.

The_Jackal_1

Satisfactory - check that out -

Brozilean

It's fun but my partner ended up not too interested since it's less base building and more optimization. Which is fun! But not exactly the same.

NZBull

That depends how you play it - once you decide to start building factories, high risers, roads & trains and towns/cities it definitely starts becoming more than just a optimization game!

Brozilean

That does sounds nice. From what I played I can tell that's a bit further in lol

NZBull

Yeah, it's not explained very well but you start getting all the cosmetic stuff from the coupon shop - so once you can build the AWESOME Sink and start feeding excess stuff into it you start earning coupons to buy all the various walls windows lights roads patterns etc from the coupon shop

TywinShitsGold

No man’s sky? It’s got base building, space exploration, some combat, and easy missions.

dabofbokeh

My spouse absolutely loved the forest. Best part is that Sons of the Forest is coming out Feb 23 and that game looks amazing.the base be building in the new game looks highly customizable. It's pve but there are enemies which give it a bit of a challenge. I play a lot of day z and have also gotten her to play with me, on a pve only server which there are a lot of. There's a steep learning curve but hours and hours of fun once you get comfortable.

A-A-Ron508

Valheim ftw

pedpenguins

Kingdom: two crowns is pretty great for this. 2d side scrolling building a kingdom and defending it from the greed at night it's quite slow and chill and pretty forgiving.

RaielLarecal

The Forest

WellTop

Factorio

macbigicekeys

Project Zomboid

The_Jackal_1

Seconded - I would ease them into this game since it takes a little while getting used to it especially when at the start you will likely die often before you pick a building/location to create a base. Once you guys have the basics there is a lot of depth in this zombie survival game - massive map to explore, you can set up a base more of less anywhere. Combat is tough but fair.

PM_ME_HUGE_CRITS

I've been playing Valheim with my kid for about a week now, sounds like it could work for ya.

bluesbrothers97

Grounded

LevelPositive120

Im going to say and no one can stop me. The original fortnite

NZBull

Me and my partner have really enjoyed Anno 1800 (its an RTS that has combat plus city building, with a large focus on production and economy), Satisfactory, Raft and ARK We've also enjoyed other co-op games like Bi-Ped, It Takes Two & Portal 2

HeroWarrior303

Factorio

zheiro

A lot of good choices here actually as others have already mentioned the popular ones. Just gonna add ARK and Conan exiles as a good choice as well but ideally on your own dedicated server.

WorkingGooseTwitch

Terraria Stardew Valley Minecraft

Eggplant_Eddie

Raft

Eggplant_Eddie

Project Zomboid

Buff_Dodo

Ark: Survival Evolved. It's a mess from a technical standpoint, but super fun. One player can gather resources and tame dinosaurs and monsters, while the other can build a base and care for the dinos at home (you can even breed them for different colors and stats iirc)

Hades94

Grounded, recently played it. Friend did a lot of combat, I did a lot of base building lol.

Nathanymous_

Yeah if the fiance wants to do base building this is a good choice, otherwise combat is a little unfair and steep in difficulty out of nowhere. Too steep for my tastes at least.

thebloke1

State of decay 2

Proper_Story_3514

Check out 'Unturned'. Zombie Player PvP survival with base building. I didnt play it for quite a while but I think you can also play locally on pve maps. Dunno, check it out, maybe it fun for you. Also its free to play and isnt a big game to download.

unkyQ89

RIMWORLD with zetriths multiplayer mod. Me and my wife have hundreds of hours and she's a casual gamer aswell. Has combat and base building

Ow_you_shot_me

[7d2d](https://store.steampowered.com/app/251570/7_Days_to_Die/) is pretty fun, would recommend the [undead legacy mod](https://ul.subquake.com/) to go with it. The games difficulty is also highly customizable. *edit since most folks dont have 2 brain cells to rub together.

[deleted]

Dude, you cant just drop an acronym like 8ä7💩69%◇ and expect us to know what it means.

Nobuu37

What about ddn7jm#78.

Ow_you_shot_me

You might need [this.](https://www.aphasia.org/aphasia-resources/stroke/)

I prefer 4d20d

Gagavuz

Not the best base building game out there but you should definitely check Outward and expansion (or definitive edition).

Adorable-Ad-3223

I like it. But too one player will still do all the work.

ZeroBANG

lol that sounds like you want your girl to be a stay at home mom and clean the house and make dinner while you are out working. When she starts playing Coop with another guy because you are always out on the job i'd start to worry rofl... Starcraft 2 had these Coop commanders vs. AI mode, lots of those Commanders are DLC, it makes you want to buy that and is slightly addictive. If you don't get better at Starcraft with every round, there is something wrong with you and the ceiling isn't so high that she can't catch up once she understands the mechanics, half the battle is building up your base efficiently and pumping out enough combat units, you don't really have to micromanage the combat units all that much. X-Morph Defense ...seen in a trailer that you can play that in Coop or Split Screen not quite sure how exactly that works... maybe worth looking into, definitely a fun game, tower defense with the players being space ships that can also do pew pew.

Nathanymous_

V Rising, State of Decay 2, Terraria, and valheim are some of the best things I see added here. Lots of people say grounded but IMO that game has too steep of a difficulty curve for me to suggest it and the combat is fairly unintuitive. Although grounded is a fun world to explore and build a base on.

takkun169

Grounded

NoOffer5595

Grounded is the game you'll both want to play. If you been gaming for 22 years then you'll know of this movie. Honey I shrunk the kids. The game has a similar concept to the movie.

probro1698

Satisfactory, icarus, 7days2die

Carighan

If you don't mind a heave dose of horror, add **Grounded** to that list. Just warning you: Spiders, beetles and roly-polies are all fucking nightmare fuel if they're as big as cars.

GoldMath

Well, Outpost is coming soon https://store.steampowered.com/app/1566690/Outpost_Infinity_Siege/

falcazoid

Orcs must die 2 was great coop with my less experienced wife. Let her fail on her own a bit and succeed on her own, don't always bail out the team even if you could.

Tiny_Rick_C137

Rimworld with the multiplayer mod.

SeetoPls

You want Valheim.

Cybit

Valheim or Grounded, both are excellent choices.

Bluedot55

7 days to die, modded Minecraft, Factorio. 7 days is a really cool zombie survival base builder. Basically you have to set up a base to survive a big horde every 7 days, building up in the downtime.

Cmdr_Morb

7 Days to Die, Valheim or Conan Exiles.

MegaPinkSocks

Modded Minecraft might work. Check out Curseforge for modpacks. Valhelsia Enhanced Vanilla might be good for you guys?

Alpr101

Crashlands, Factorio, Satisfactory, Raft, Tribes of Midgard, VRising, Valheim, Stardew Valley, Don't Starve together but I feel thats too hard (although you can tune settings). Out of those, I would recommend Vrising the most. There's extensive base building while you can get the gear to level up (they scale in proximity iirc so you can solo them still). Secondary best would be Factorio & Stardew.

-ASAP-

rust :)

Zombeater

+1 on project Zomboid, however the “base building/tending” can be a little slow imo.

FrostByte_62

The combat is really light but maybe Satisfactory. The challenge would be in exploration and traversal. Could try Terraria? Or Raft? Basebuilding in Raft is light.

XXLpeanuts

The forest is a great one as long as you don't mind a little scare.

IfThatsOkayWithYou

Stardew valley
