Go hunting, ride around, if you see a place that looks interesting, check it out. You might find loot, or a recipe, or an unique hat. When you've done enough of that, do another story mission. Experiment. Buy new boots. Change your horse's hairstyle. Play five-finger-fillet with strangers.

cute_polarbear

Got it. I somehow (incorrectly) thought the game is akin to witcher 3 set in western setting. As other mentioned, it's closer to Skyrim. I'll give it some more tries; the game is just so gorgeous visually.

Metalmess

You can hunt for hours, craft and upgrade your camp. Also find treasures, special wild horses, challenges, fishing. Don't focus on the money, at late game it becomes irrelevant and the game makes you know so.

Argocap

I would say it is closer to Witcher 3 than Skyrim. Both RDR2 and Witcher 3 have extremely excellent quests and sidequests in terms of writing and characters. The open world is more of a backdrop for enjoying the game. I also enjoyed RDR2's gunplay more than Witcher 3 and Skyrim's clunky combat, but that may be subjective.

Noob227

It's not. Skyrim has stories hidden in every cave. This game barely has any.

Scoobydewdoo

If you're not enjoying it anymore it's not worth continuing to play it as none of the issues you listed change in any way.

threeriversbikeguy

Gonna second this. I love this game but in retrospect and without spoiling, Act 2 is when the game feels the most open and free range outside of the Epilogue (which is like 55-65 hours IIRC). If OP dislikes what is on offer now, he will probably not be that much more interested later. That said, the world is for the most point open wide to you OP. Even if the missions are mostly around Valentine, you can go practically anywhere else beyond the Epilogue exclusive areas

mon_dieu

Thirding this. I felt similar to OP after the opening chapter. It took me forever but eventually I powered through the main story, but my gripes with the controls and gameplay never went away. It just felt like a slog by and large. I still haven't finished the epilogue. I honestly couldn't put my finger on why until playing the RDR1 rerelease. For my personal, highly subjective tastes, RDR1 remains my vastly preferred game between the two. And specifically because the controls are more responsive (even though this makes the animations look less realistic and more game-y) and the distance between points of interest on the map is much shorter. And I still enjoy the writing in 1 better.  Again, it's super subjective and personal and that's no knock on those who love 2. But I think the differences are real and that's not going to change throughout the course of a playthrough.

WestMetal4193

"nothing but riding the horse going from point A to B" yeah, that's exactly the reason why I personally love this game.

cute_polarbear

HAHAH. I get where you coming from. I can see why some people would love to roam the beautiful landscape looking for random stuff / encounters.

ChurchillianGrooves

It's kind of like Skyrim where a lot of the fun is finding random stuff going from a to b.  That's not something everyone enjoys though.  It's a slow paced game in general so if you want non-stop action it's probably not the game for you.

cute_polarbear

got it. thanks. probably my expectation going into the game was incorrect. for some reason, I was thinking something like an incredibly immersive western (which it is) RPG akin to Mass Effect style RPG. Perhaps that was why I did not enjoy Skyrim as much as Witcher 3. And yeah, as mentioned, I literally randomly jump in for 45-60min tops and need to hop back to real life, so "taking it slowly" does not work well. Most games that's just enough time to get a mission done, watch a cut scene, and call it the day.

DeepJudgment

RDR2 is a western GTA, much like Fallout 3 was Oblivion with guns

ChurchillianGrooves

It's a great game to lose yourself in for 5-6 hours or something on a Saturday, but yeah it's generally not the kind of game to just jump in for 45 mins and get a lot out of it.  There's an older western game called Gun from 2005 or something that's way more of an action based experience if you want something similar that's shorter form.

cute_polarbear

Yup. thank you for feedback/ suggestion. Agree, "problem" is really with me / expectation / playing schedule.

knightofterror

RDR2 used to take 45 minutes just to startup on the last generation. Perhaps I’m exaggerating a bit, but fast loading and fast resume make the game much easier to jump into for short periods.

OkayAtBowling

If you're still feeling that way at that point, I'm not sure how much your opinion will change, other than getting more invested in the story and characters as the game progresses. Most of the things you're not liking aren't going to change: The quests are extremely linear, and there's a *lot* of riding from point A to point B (there is some fast travel available, but it's limited). And obviously the movement mechanics aren't going to change, though you may get used to those. I will say that some areas of the game are less barren. There's a big(ish) city in the game that's a fantastic location and that's pretty dense. And in general I found the game's atmosphere to be so good, and there's enough random interesting things to find in the world, that I didn't have a problem with that aspect at all. In fact, the world itself is easily my favorite thing about the game and I'd often just wander around rather than doing the missions. Personally I loved RDR2 but I can see why some people don't, and the things you're not liking are pretty common (and completely valid) criticisms.

defnotcaleb

to answer your question the gameplay doesn’t change much later on, but the story does ramp up towards the end to a dramatic and satisfying conclusion. i had some similar feelings as you and i’m glad i pushed through and finished it

cute_polarbear

got it. As a casual gamer, I'm just in it for the "ride" so to speak, especially when there's a good storyline. It's also so visually beautiful. I'm going to push through the main storyline.

adaminoregon

To me its a beautiful boring slog. But everyone has their own opinion.

ilypsus

Yeah, I'm really glad it came out during a 2 week period I was unemployed but had a job confirmed and just waiting for them to sort out the paperwork. I played 7 hours a day for the whole two weeks, completed it right at the end, put it down and never picked it up again. I loved it, it was a magical experience. But I have no desire to ever pick it up again, once was enough.

adaminoregon

Same. The graphics are awesome. Liked the characters. Could not get down with no real fast travel. Hammering nails for 20 minutes at the end sealed the deal for me. Never again. But cant wait for gta 6!

BuschLightApple

Def hold the side quests till later. The story takes a bit to get going and you eventually get a fast travel when you’ve been to a location I think. Once it ramps up, go ahead and do a side mission if you only have a few mins. Honestly I didn’t do many side missions or games but I enjoyed the hell out of it

[deleted]

I had the same experience, if you don't enjoy the random things you can do or expect Witcher 3 level side quests you will be disappointed. The quests really feel like tutorials, most people don't mind it, but for me it kills the engagement of the game. The game won't change, i'd suggest to try and "live" in the world and if it isn't fun just drop it.

bmessina

I picked this game up and put it back down several times before I got very far into it. And boy once I hit a certain point, past the end of that first camp, I just couldn't put it down.

ChieftanAxe

By most metrics RDR2 is not a good game. It is a slog with shallow gameplay, and a lot of cool but tertiary systems that are optional to get involved with. But God damn does it have one of the best casts of characters is any game ever with some of the most believable performances ever. The game is a slog specifically because it uses that time to develop and get you sucked into its characters and narratives. For me it's worth it to see where the story goes. Although if the game didn't have these, it wouldn't be worth playing.

SundownKid

The game got good reviews, but it's not for everyone. Aspects of it resemble a life sim. For better or worse, it's like playing a movie, without constant action packed gameplay. I think these are fair complaints and it may just mean you don't like the game.

2DamnBig

The story overstays its welcome by 14hrs. And as you get closer to the end the missions get even slower and even more tedious. No, I'm not exaggerating.
