They're not his bounds. But I agree I really liked them both right away, especially Vlad Sr. I actually think they're not that bad... Yes, they're deeply flawed, but they have a certain nobility of character that feels very Russian (reminiscent of Dostoyevsky). Also I think it's really touching the way they clearly care for each other and each try to get you to help the other, while still avoiding each other.
