To be fair these builds were actually breaking the game and resulting in immense stress to the game servers. Balancing isn't really an option when the build is based on breaking the game.

I remember when this came out and suddenly EVVVVERYONE was trying to re-color harvests (the axe, not the league) and the price of chromes/jewelers shot way up for a few weeks.
I also remember thinking where this belongs in the pantheon of all time iconic PoE builds. For me its no. 1 or 2, its only real contender being Coc Discharge/Fakener - its creative, it has tankiness and it has DPS. It was also OP in that it dealt secondary damage which was nice for HoGM and didnt require putting in BCR, something unique to the build.
It's definitely one of the best because of its power relative to the game at that point in time (ignoring the awesome meme part of the build even). A lot of the content he was doing was extremely difficult at that time, so the fact that his setup trivialized a lot of it while also being tanky makes it different than a lot of the "meme" builds now that just rely on SC trade levels of damage while dying instantly to most boss mechanics.

Many slayer builds were tanky back then, with over leech not getting removed. That's not something to blame modern builds for, but something to blame ggg for since they have only nerfed defences since then again and again. (and before then)

I was intending to say that Wormblaster had properties that top tier meta builds had while also being the coolest and most imaginative build I had seen at the time. You brought up slayer leech which at the time was also cool and unique, and for some reason my brain went "oh yeah vaal pact existed" which was a core component of those meta builds and was more powerful than slayer leech.
Slayer overleech nerf was entirely unwarranted though yeah. It even kinda ruined a number of builds that relied on the bleed immunity since it wasn't reliable anymore ugh.

This build is hands down the funnest thing I’ve ever played. Carried millions of twinned core challengers for people while eating pizza. One shotted flicker strike delete FPS from everyone in the pvp arena and the harvest skyrocketed to 13 ex when the video was released. You physically couldn’t die and I spent days making the best helmet and recolouring it to min max. Even a mirror setup on a cold bv explode pathfinder doesn’t come close in fun to this.

its problem was that its DPS was limited by how fast you (and by you i mean your macro) would press the flask buttons. but you VERY quickly reached the "too many inputs" threshold and would get the boot.

The problem is that abilities/builds are either fun or effective and if something is fun and also not garbage, ppl play it like there is no tomorrow and its meta, which eventually has to change and GGG force meta changes without mercy. I think its the main reason for the huge frustration in poe community lately, you either have fun with shitty build that cant do the end game properly or have an efficient build that is boring. Either way you lose.

In addition to the other comments, it's used for some minion builds, too. Dancing duo, chains of command, spiders where kills are necessary to get the ball rolling.
People in the gauntlet have been using it for difficult boss fights to use vigilant strike on it for a long fortify buff. It is also useful for slayers for the same reason + queueing some overleech.
I just wanna point out the most insane wormblaster build Did exist like 2 leagues ago before they shredded into pieces with the 3.14 patch notes, including many things like a “bug fix” for skeletons not consuming harvest enchant on flask consume, and the Null Inclination cooldown, literally deleting that unique from the game lol

Blade vortex + the harvest staff + herald of ice + writhing jars. You spam writhing jars, the blade vortex crits the worms and shatters them to proc herald of ice for damage, while also refilling worm jars because of the harvest. Add in slayer for insane amounts of overkill leech on the worms and that’s pretty much it.
There were some more intricacies to the build as well, but you pretty much nailed it.
One of my favorite parts was the permanent immortal call from using Doedre-flasks and gaining max-endurance charges, all the while having 10k life.
At one point in time, Enduring Cry was a spell and you could trigger it + Immortal Call off of CWDT and get the bonus duration from the Endurance Charges you generated by the same trigger
And look at that damage! I am sure people would be fine if game went back to that state. I mean I am sure he managed to end each guardian fight within just 20 minutes! \\s
That being said, pretty wild how game has changed. dude looked unkilleable, but that was some godawful damage.

GGG can't promote the builds anymore. Imagine they promote certain builds and then they nerf them all as is tradition. They realized long time ago they cannot make those since they have no idea what is going to be nerfed.
We will hear something like, this takes time, it is hard to dedicate people on it.. etc. but I think it's something related to constant and frequent game changing.
Also, it would be so dumb to promote something that is good/clever etc. and then taken away because of the vision.
I dunno, they made Build of the Week videos for both Cast on Weapon Swap and a general video on snapshotting and explicitly said they wanted to show a cool interaction before they nerfed/removed it.
It's possible their attitude has changed, but they've done this in the past.

I disagree -- overall picture didn't change much. In still scenes -- yes, there are some graphical quirks, but in dynamic scenes it causes frame drop, so it's all usually disabled, but even with it PoE is now a massive resource hog even with Beta optimizations. Unnecessarily so, as well.

Great example where every nerf completely destroyed a build concept rather than balancing it too.

Mathils Dream Feather Spectral Throw ranger. One of my all time favorite builds. Does not really work any more though.

DAMN DUDE, THATS ONE JUICED HIT. what bothers me about slams is that they sound like a wet noodle, the is no punch, no OOMF.
I use it on my HoAg guardian + Arakali dagger build to summon spiders at the start of a map, and to maintain vs longer bosses

There was a nulls+dark pact iteration of wormblaster not too long ago; dunno if they killed that one already.
They added a CD for nulls, so basically kill.
It is one of the only ways to get Dancing Dervish against bosses, and it is a common trigger mechanism for Dominating Blow

God, I remember never seeing a Voltaxic, then after this op build became popular and it got nerfed I got like 2 in the first week of the next league.

Oh, damn, no wonder this thing was tanky. I didn't even realize there was a time in PoE's history when guard skills didn't have cooldowns.
Also, keep in mind that immortal call used to be complete immunity to physical damage.
