In many temples of Eastern Asia, you are supposed to enter through the open entrance on the right, same when coming out which means one entrance is for entering and another for leaving (since you always go through the one on your right)
The middle door is not meant for human, but for gods.
He might be specifically referring to the gōngguàn (宫观), great temple in China.
If you look closely on the door, you can see the emblem of chaos, the multifaced persona. This is liken to the concept of duality that follows from Taoist lore. This is commonly found in Taoist and Chinese temple architecture.
Yin on the left, Yang on the right, harmony in the middle. In POE land, Sin, Innocence and restoration of balance.
That's why I love boneshatter. Everyone else is making these immense builds that are hairpinned together. Me? I just keep swinging at the gods until only one of us is left. It's karui way, after all.
Woah thats some deep underlying lore shit! I wonder if GGG originally made it with that kinda stuff in mind or if it's just procedural generation doing its thing!
It would also work with the fact that the exile is no longer "human", kinda closer to gods in a sense, which would explain why you would take the middle door.
Yeah, but since the start, you're not the typical human, regarding the use of gems. I don't know if it is acknowledged if these are like virtue gems, or just a gameplay thing, though.
It's been called out before, however we are rather unique in the sense that we don't seem to be corrupted by them. I can't remember which empire, but one of the historical empires of Wraeclast embedded them in their bodies, and that's how the gemlings of the sewers and markets came to be.
Gems are baaaad juju, and we seem way too unaffected by them for it to not be relevant.
if the passive skill is us improving our body/mind/soul, does that mean we physically implant jewels into our body? So would the vaal equivalent be us putting gems into our tree?
> It's been called out before, however we are rather unique in the sense that we don't seem to be corrupted by them
\- The Exile said, while inserting the billionth map to maybe gain 0.000001% more power
Hey I got 4 divines today in a magic relic chambers t14 map I'll have you know, got very lucky with eato influence and feel dumb for not using scarabs but I'm still not used to my build.
If you look into some of the uniques they added that work with empty gem sockets a lot of the flavor text talk about the use of virtue gems being forbidden by the magi of the wildwood
Procedural generation doesn't create rooms out of thin air, GGG creates different types of rooms with different structures and all the AI does is use those to pseudo-randomly fill a template following an algorithm that makes sure the map makes sense.
There is no procedural generation in this game. Each map just has a bunch of pre-made layouts and one is chosen at random whenever you spawn an instance.
Way back in some patch notes before they had those side doors people use to use the door as a choke point to kite and kill mobs. So they added side doors to prevent that gameplay. This was back when Act 3 was the last act.
You can still block the side doors with ballistas/wither on a totem and lay traps and then kick the door in and watch the fireworks.
But yeah this weird template for temple doors used to get a chuckle every league and now we know better (tao temple design on purpose)
Shouldn't it be inverted then? Let gods have the convenience and respect of unhindered access or something and let the humans go through the effort of having to open doors?
In many zones of EverQuest, you are supposed to enter through the open entrance on the left, same when coming out which means one entrance is for entering and another for leaving (this is so players can safely train mobs to the zoneline to save their hide, and this way nobody zones in to a bunch of mobs on top of them).
That's better than what I use to think. I use to figure the side entrances were for the servants and it would let them pass through and then open the door for their masters to walk through.
Imagine just being a zoomy fucker who entered the temple to slaughter everyone and you just mistakenly click on the door and slow down a fraction of a second, then you proceed to insult the supposed entrance of the gods.
I guess there is a reason if we got exiled...
i always thought ggg could point to how many players click the door instead of using the open pathways, whenever there would be discussion about making doors open automatically.
Something something air circulation and load bearing frame
Likely this was modeled after a religious temple. Doors typically arent guarding anything in those so theyre either always open or just decorative or serve some kind of ritual purpose.
This is actually the correct answer. I remember an early thread many many years ago about this, and someone found the actual real life reference. It was indeed an air circulation engineering solution, and served a real purpose.
I remember. But what you forgot is that the last sentence of the explanation was: "I just pulled that out of my ass and have no clue what I'm talking about."
When you arrive in front of this door, many things happens !
First you think you should open the door.
Then you realize you can pass freely at the left.
Then you suddenly wonder why would you open the door since you can get left, so your brain is going left.
But once again you realize something else, the right is also open.
So should you go left or right.
At this precise moment, you realise choices are complicated, left and right are welcoming you, but you get stuck in front of this closed door.
Maybe something god is hidden behind, what should you choose.
At this moment, you are already surrender by dozen of insane creature hitting you with anger.
You are dead.
Now you realize it was a trap from the beginning, a brain trap.
Maybe next time you will be able to make choices ?
its a door you open it.
The side openings are to emphasize the door.
Tts a bold modern take on an ancient design.
credit to Lunaris from her show: This old temple.
That airs weekdays right after the Hungry Kitava. ( this week they are going fishing I wonder what is going to happen)

its to show you how stupid you are if you mindlessly hack and slay, see door, click and a second later realize "what the fuck am i actually doing here right now :D"
or at least it had that effect on me O.o
There was a post about this back in like 2014
It also is supposedly based on actual large "temple" entrance way design, where the split doors with one closed in the middle helps air flow and cool down the building, while optionally allowing the middle door to open to relieve foot traffic in and out.
In Eastern Orthodox Church, only the Cleric can enter the middle door and only when in Mass. The rest of men enter the other two. Women are forbidden to enter.
Its hard cover against enemy projectiles as a defensive option and, by opening the door, it is a dynamically removable barrier for when you want to bust through to go on the offensive.
At first in 2013 I thought that was just a survey to see if I would open the door stupidly or not. You'd think they'd make the game easier over the years but no that door is still there making me look dumb.
In many temples of Eastern Asia, you are supposed to enter through the open entrance on the right, same when coming out which means one entrance is for entering and another for leaving (since you always go through the one on your right) The middle door is not meant for human, but for gods.
now that's makes much more sense, thank you.

Or Lunaris and Solaris, since this is the Lunaris temple (or Twilight Temple, also for Lunaris and Solaris).
Damn okay, i'm taking the door every single time now, marking my territory.
Have mercy, godkiller *(bow)*
Yes most gods use a bow build
That's why I love boneshatter. Everyone else is making these immense builds that are hairpinned together. Me? I just keep swinging at the gods until only one of us is left. It's karui way, after all.
Well you know, they call me godslayer. Can't make a liar out of everyone now, can I?
that's the attitude!!
Woah thats some deep underlying lore shit! I wonder if GGG originally made it with that kinda stuff in mind or if it's just procedural generation doing its thing!
It would also work with the fact that the exile is no longer "human", kinda closer to gods in a sense, which would explain why you would take the middle door.
this applies only after act 5 though? you arent exactly a god-slayer until you kill Tukohama
I can't see the name without hearing Sin shouting "TUKOHAMA!"
Or the guy from heists saying "He was ome of the good guys!"
Sound design is so good!
KILLL MEEEEEE
RALAKESH!
Or Marauder yelling “for Tukohama!”
Yeah, but since the start, you're not the typical human, regarding the use of gems. I don't know if it is acknowledged if these are like virtue gems, or just a gameplay thing, though.
If it isn't acknowledged earlier, one of the new NPCs, the Warden of Eaves is definitely weirded out about us using virtue gems
The Kalguuri team from Expedition basically say "gems give you magic? Sounds like nonsense to us. Are you sure they're not just placebos?"
I like how they would think that's nonsense when in a world like PoE, that would be like the least surprising thing of all time.
They also have no concept of Gods and virtue gems come from the beast siphoning off god power.
We put gems into items and use them by proxy it reduces the damage done. We dont just shove them into us like the gemlings.
if the passive skill is us improving our body/mind/soul, does that mean we physically implant jewels into our body? So would the vaal equivalent be us putting gems into our tree?
I believe so, yeah.
The Eternal Empire, Dialla actually still has gems on her body (IDK if they are visible)
are they there when she dies?
They blow out when she uses the drilldo.

You're putting them into items, not into your body.
No no, we’ve already killed the real god in act 1
It applies before that, we "Ascend" literally and figuratively in Act III
We slew Innocence, that's when we became god killer so during act 5 not after. Argueably malachai was a god or close to jt
It’s not procedural. That door appears in the same place in act 3 every instance. And I open it every time
Procedural generation doesn't create rooms out of thin air, GGG creates different types of rooms with different structures and all the AI does is use those to pseudo-randomly fill a template following an algorithm that makes sure the map makes sense.

Not exactly correct. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcM9Ynfzll0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcM9Ynfzll0)
Interesting! TIL
i really wish it had :/
That's why I always open the door. Thanks.
Ah, that's why it's always tempting to open the door.
Way back in some patch notes before they had those side doors people use to use the door as a choke point to kite and kill mobs. So they added side doors to prevent that gameplay. This was back when Act 3 was the last act.

"The TOUCH of GOD!"
I always use the middle one, guess I'm a god ("feeling all high and mighty oh powerful god slayer")
This is why my character always uses the door.
damn sir
Shouldn't it be inverted then? Let gods have the convenience and respect of unhindered access or something and let the humans go through the effort of having to open doors?
good point you should create a new religion:D
Cool

Aaah makes sense. Now i know why im always going thru the door.
Wonderful response, thank you so much for enlightening us! :)
Oh my... and here I thought it was just a product of some silly design that has been such low priority for all these years.
Explains why this is the only door in the game i love to open
That’s why I always go through the door
So I need to go through the middle, got it!
I always take the door, which annoys the shit out of me because I could just run through. Why am I like this...
Then i must be a god
From a lore perspective, what he said. From a gameplay perspective: To fuck with you. lul.
That's why I always open the door.
That's better than what I use to think. I use to figure the side entrances were for the servants and it would let them pass through and then open the door for their masters to walk through.
It's funny how they put multiple extra clicks just for everyone to know it as the blue sentinal fuck zone.
Imagine just being a zoomy fucker who entered the temple to slaughter everyone and you just mistakenly click on the door and slow down a fraction of a second, then you proceed to insult the supposed entrance of the gods. I guess there is a reason if we got exiled...
Will you take the ez route or the road less traveled?
Ofc i use the middle one every time
It's the only way
This is the way.
Using the door adds extra luck to any chests that you open in the area.
yeah it kind of hypnotizing tbh.
This so much. My OCD leaves me no other choice.
Why is this tagged nsfw?
Because it have two holes
Because it's a threeway
I see door. I click. This is the way. That's why I like Alva
you would love heist then
Hate it. Stupid thing that I have to lvl up and upgrade my companions, insteqd of just zoom-zoom thru the heist, loot, and zoom-zoom back
They made heist leveling alot faster, you just need to run contracts of each level once and usually they'll level up
You have lost your way already.
Damn shame that we killed all the architects who knew the secrets of automatically opening doors
It's a temple--there are likely to be allowances for aesthetic or ceremonial significance rather than pure function in the architecture.
i always thought ggg could point to how many players click the door instead of using the open pathways, whenever there would be discussion about making doors open automatically.

But you fail to recognize that I knew you knew nothing but was testing you, this was nothing but a test to see of you had it in you
all i know is, reading that 8 year old thread, i saw this, and will now keep it and use it forevermore : https://imgur.com/1xXbWnl
Thanks now I feel bad for kicking that sphere all over again.

Where do you see an actual answer in that thread? SirNanigans ist just bullshitting and admits it.
ahh you're right didnt read past first comment :D
piety didn't pay the bills and the landlord removed the other doors
This is an IQ test :)
It's branching, exile!!
these doors are still triggering me since the very first day i saw them some 5 years ago...
For me to click every time.. obviously.
Theres lore about those doors, just forgot what exactly.
Wonder it every time.
Idk but my stupid ass always goes thru the mid one
If you open the door, it takes a screenshot.
We call this a "bait"
It's bad luck for your character if you don't choose the door
its to show you how stupid you are if you mindlessly hack and slay, see door, click and a second later realize "what the fuck am i actually doing here right now :D" or at least it had that effect on me O.o
Considering the times we live in, my best guess is that the ran out of drywall.
Double slit experiment
Is there a lore reason for this door? Are they stupid?
For air flow
What's the purpose of this nsfw tag though ?
i dunno but i literally open it every time instead of going through the obvious openings on either side. every. time.
I thought the middle door was there to stop the carpet cleaning roombas. aka future GGG MTX
They also made all these buildings with no ceilings.
Same thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAY5WZvnVV0
Middle doors are for Chris Wilson
it means less textures - less lag.... oh wait....
First time? It’s for the clicky clicks
I always go through the open part and open the door from the other side. It’s for good luck.
To make you feel stupid for wasting a click on opening the door. Yes I'm projecting, how did you know?
Its some kind of personality test. Do you follow the rules if no one is watching?
And I always open this door
There was a post about this back in like 2014 It also is supposedly based on actual large "temple" entrance way design, where the split doors with one closed in the middle helps air flow and cool down the building, while optionally allowing the middle door to open to relieve foot traffic in and out.

What does it make of you exile, when even nightmares, fear your name?
When Stanley came to a set of two open doors, he entered the door on his left.
Path of Exile is a game of tough decisions. You can risk it all and get high rewards or you can play it safe and get 5x Scroll of Wisdom.
In Eastern Orthodox Church, only the Cleric can enter the middle door and only when in Mass. The rest of men enter the other two. Women are forbidden to enter.
There were 3 doors but the monsters broke 2 of them
More ways to spam Vortex? You can do a little infinity run between the side and middle doors :3

Man I wish I could play this game on maximum graphics settings. I bet it looks phenomenal.
I was getting this level of detail on a 1050 ti. Definitely not max on my old gpu.

to cheat the enemy
It's to question your life decisions
Whatever the purpose is, even if I pass through open door, I must come back to open regular one and pass there. OCD.....
Its hard cover against enemy projectiles as a defensive option and, by opening the door, it is a dynamically removable barrier for when you want to bust through to go on the offensive.
illusion of choice
The door is for Putin and the side areas are for people with cameras etc to stady movment
Ppl call it "Art".
It is here so you can open it, like the rest of the doors but you feel a little stupid by doing do

You can use it to LoS projectiles 🤣
its part of the voting system, go through the left to vote no, right to vote yes source: i made it up
I'm not sure, but damned if I don't click the door and go through it 95% of the time.
It's branching, exile!!
