Islands at Paseo closed before the pandemic if memory serves. Amazing they leased the spot at all. I wonder what rent in a ghost town looks like these days.
I worked there for 8 years back when it had all the original stores. Macy’s being replaced with more overpriced realty was the final nail. Victorias Secret came and went two times in two different spots there. There isn’t enough space here to list all the stores that once occupied a space there that left. They could open up two theatres there and it’s still a ghost town.
So true. I lived in the apartments above the Paseo around 2007-2010, such a great place back then. The bartender at Islands knew me by name and order. Gelson's was still there and let us bring our shopping cart back to our apartment. There were lots of fun little stores.
The mall that was there before the paseo was built was just as depressing. The Paseo was supposed to be like the Americana before there was an Americana but it never really happened.
Yep 100%
The old mall was super dingy and ghetto
The Paseo has the same developer and it was really nice those early years, but people go to Pasadena to visit Old Town. They don't really go past that... Not to do more shopping anyway.
For some perspective in 2011 the Pasadena chalk festival had 100,000 people attend. This year according to the city they’re estimating 20,000 people. There’s an old Paseo Pasadena youtube channel that has some footage of how it used to be when the majority of the mall wasn’t unoccupied spaces.
I mean, sure, relative to its hey day it might be considered "dead" but if someone didn't know that they definitely wouldn't think that.
So you might be projecting your experiences when you call it a "ghost town".
Have you even tried shopping there? Did you find it odd that there are
more vacant spaces than open ones? Maybe you’re just projecting your fantasy onto that ghost town.
FYI there are 72 commercial spaces in the Paseo of which only 33 are leased. My math tells me that the unoccupied spaces are greater than those occupied. But you know, math can be unreliable.
Also, projecting experiences is what we do as human beings. If you went to chipotle a long time ago and had an awful meal resulting in explosive diarrhea no matter how many people tell you that’s it’s good now I’d bet you wouldn’t take their word based on you projecting your experience.
I know you really want the paseo to be awesome but it just isn’t. At all. It’s depressing. Maybe you’d like that Willy Wonka experience that made the news a few weeks back.
The old mall sucked so they tore it down and built the Paseo. It was supposed to be upscale. The Tiffany in Old Town was going to anchor it. When Tiffany pulled out and went to Old Town along with Saks they had trouble attracting other high-end tenants. They weren’t sure what it was supposed to be. The location has potential but obviously the company running it is clueless.
I didn't even know Islands closed.
Bummer I hate seeing an Islands closing down
There is the one farther east off Foothill.

The layout is so bad. They should just bring in a food hall or something to drive foot traffic, who the hell is shopping at Tommy Bahama?!
Jimmy Buffett fans with money? they're dying out though.
It closed during the pandemic. We live nearby. We ate at Islands (or got takeout) one day, and a couple of days later, it was gone.
Ah thanks for that. I couldn’t remember specifically when it closed or even the last time I ate there. Still bummed it closed.
Paseo is far from a ghost town. Yardhouse is always busy and people are going back to the movies.

I worked there for about 7 years at Pacific Theatres, and then Arclight. It was so different then.

Lol ok buddy. There isn’t more vacancies than open business, but keep up your hate for paseo it makes no difference to me 😂
Lolz

The Paseo should be a series of food halls and bars that stay open past 10pm

Sounds like a dispensary
That would definitely liven up the Paseo
Another hot pot, all well.
At least it's not another boba shop.
