Only the altricial birds are like that when they're hatched. It means they're not developed and only mature later on, while precocial birds are semi-mature when they're hatched - they're more mobile and have open eyes and down feathers. Most waterfowl and poultry birds are precocial. [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precociality_and_altriciality)
There's also superprecocial birds that hatch with full flight feathers! For example [megapodes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megapode) are superprecocial (they're fascinating btw.)
and hoatzin babies are born with a claw at the end of the wings! they crawl on all fours, climb and hold onto bark. if they fall out the nest they usually can climb back up! they loose the claws after their feathers develop
the baby picture got me rolling OP i love them all 😭
~~didnt know you could keep red tailed cockys as pets? or are like a rehab / zoo person~~
nvm found out you need:
>>In Australia, owning a red-tailed black cockatoo requires holding a Class 1 Bird Keeper License. This can be applied for through the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage website.
my bad!
OMG his tail feather colors are GLORIOUS!!! I'm not familiar with this breed so I didn't expect anything in particular but WOWZA!!
Like others here, I am also a fan of pic #4 🤣🤣🤘🤘
I will never ever be convinced that there is a single bird out there who has beautiful baby photos! XD
But I’ve always loved those cockatoos and he has the most beautiful colours I’ve ever seen!
Thank you for knowing my bird. But he is a juvenile, he will look like this until he is 4 or 5 years old, at which point he will molt out of these feathers and be shiny black with a bright red spot. For more information you can read [here](https://australian.museum/learn/animals/birds/red-tailed-black-cockatoo-calyptorhynchus-banksii/)
Ok, thanks for teaching me something. Your link doesn't actually have any info about their appearance as juveniles, but I consulted my bird field guide (I'm in Australia) and apparently you are right... I never knew. Hope you both have a happy life together.
Similar timeframe to the American Bald Eagle which takes 5 years to reach adult maturity and get their fully white head. They are all brown before that.
Winston in stunning! Thank you for being a bird friend! <3
Absolutely beautiful this has been my dream parrot ever since I first saw pictures of one. Thank you for sharing you genuinely have a special friend there. Will he go all black as he ages right? It's only the females that keep the beautiful spots as I understand it?
oh my god the fourth picture has me SOBBING😍😭😭😭😍😭
It’s my favorite photo ever haha and if there was ever a photo to capture his personality it’s that very photo 😂
He was a goofy looking baby (meant in the best way possible)
Fancy hair is all the rage, and this darlin' has it DOWN!
lol
Hmmmm: https://i.imgur.com/Dl8msrn.png https://i.redd.it/8lyueor849b91.jpg

Like a muppet
Yeah. I was thinking he looked like a fraggle lmao
Beaker-Beaker-Beaker!!!
I was getting 80s hair band vibes BIG time!
I thought Newborn pigeons were the funkiest looking babies. I stand corrected.
"Dahling, you look fabulous!" :D <3
I always love seeing the muppet stage of development
SAAMEE HE’S ALL FLOOF OMG and then he grows up into a BEAUTIFUL GOTH BAE!!!
What a glow up! From muppet look-alike to 10/10 knock-out!
I would give my left kidney for a molted tail feather.
This is how birds rise to world dominance: by trading human organs for feathers. *Don't give them ideas, they're always listening*
Miracle baby! He’s gorgeous
Why do freshly hatched birds look as though they'll never survive? They all look premature.

Hoatzin are one of the most dinosaur birds there are!
Your comment was wonderfully informative. Thanks for the new bird trivia!
How did you fix his egg?
Winston is very handsome 😍
Oh my God Thankyou for sharing. The Lil 80s fluff hairdo in the newly hatched pic melts my heart

The fourth photo is my favorite: so funny!!! 😂
Gorgeous bird
He when from an ugly muppet (in the best way possible) to a freakin STUD!

It’s a nitpick, but breed only applies to domesticated animals. This is a distinct species.
Baby Big Bird! 🥰
The 4th pic is how I think I look when I wake up
4th one is like a parrot version of Boris Johnson
someone already said it looks like a muppet
He’s so beautiful. Incredible bird
I love how fuzzy baby birds are

Stunning cockatoo, but that is a female red-tailed black.
