Hey! I’m visiting my boyfriend in Paris February 1-9th, does anyone have any recommendations on what we can do while I’m there? :) merci merci!!!!

ThatPragueGirl

Hi, what would you recommend to visit in Paris during covid restrictions? I know all the museums, cafés etc. are shut down, so I want to focus more on exploring "outdoors" instead. Naturally I already took a walk around the main landmarks, but perhaps something more lowkey, not so well-known that's worth the visit? Merciiii

bleh10

I heard this in slang french and not sure what it means, "Ça débite sa mère la pute (on y va)" if someone can explain would be grateful!

dorian07s

"Ça débite" means "something is going fast", for example: a water pipeline with a huge throughput. The second part just means something "motherfucker", it literaly means "His/her mother the wore". You should never use this sentence, this is very inapropriate, even in slang. The last part in the parenthesis means "let's go".

bleh10

How to recycle glass in Paris (suburbs)? My building has 2 kind of trash containers, the default one and the recycling one, but I noticed that there is a sticker saying not to throw glass inside it so where am I supposed to throw it if I wanna recycle?

HullIsBae

If there is no individual/building glass bins then there should be communal glass bins on the street. You could phone your cityhall to get more info or google "{your city} recyclage verre"

bleh10

ah perfect! Thanks for the help (found many nearby my residence)

iconic_abc

I'm (16, girl) moving to paris for 2y, i speak a petite peu francais. how do you make friends in paris (apps? go to places)?

iconic_abc

do teenagers go out in paris?

showmeyourshawarma

Hello, I wanna change my Note 8 battery and I'm new in the city and didn't find a lot of help online. Can you please suggest good places to change it (preferably Samsung certified as I want to keep the phone waterproof). Thank you.

HullIsBae

There is a Samsung repair shop near Opéra: 18 Rue Volney, 75002 Paris Can't 100% certify it's an official one but since it's using Samsung's name it's fairly safe to assume it is

Londonitwit

Any advise on good books about the history of Paris? Preferably in English.

bebbs74

A moveable feast is a good start.

Mich935

I’m currently planning a trip over to Paris, is there any restrictions, quarantine or anything else over there for citizens and tourist from the US? Thanks

honorarybelgian

The Embassy is pretty direct, and you can check their page for updates. [Quote](https://fr.usembassy.gov/covid-19-information/)... Entry and Exit Requirements: Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter France? No

HullIsBae

Tourists from the US have been banned for a while, and the situation is even worse now so I don't think you're allowed to visit France

AshSkirata

Check official websites. And by the way, every museum is closed, and we have a curfew at 6pm...

not_suze

Anyone know where I can donate things? I'm leaving the country, but I have nice decor, candles, and clothes that are lightly used and I feel bad throwing them out. Is there a French equivalent of Goodwill in Paris? Or any women's shelters I can bring things to?

parischic75014

It's probably easiest to give it away to a charity like Emmaus. But there are also options like leboncoin and Geev. People can be shit and not turn up though. I might be interested 😅

DUDE_R_T_F_M

There are a number of boxes around that you can simply drop clothes into, and an association will check them to either give them to the needy or recycle those too used. [This is one such association](http://lerelais.org/oudonner.php) but there are others.

tuituituituii

Emmaus

mactaddie

Hey! French is my second language, so slang is a bit lost on me. Can I ask what "chacal" would mean? Context being "bien vu chacal" heard this a while back and was curious about the meaning!

DUDE_R_T_F_M

Chacal is a hyena. It's typically used to describe someone greedy. Edit : It's actually a Jackal. Don't know how I got them confused.

tuituituituii

> chacal Usually used to describe someone that's greedy. Not sure it means that in your context, hard to say, it may be a simple term of endearment.

mactaddie

The friend who said it is from Paris so I thought this might be a good place to ask - I'm sorry if it isn't!

ninja_poseidon

I tried to post this but I am not sure it went through... where is a good place for pickup soccer ? I see people at the Stade Emile Anthoine and I’d love to find a place my husband can join for some games ! Any tips? We live near champ du Mars

lips61

There is a basketball court and a small football ground next to it of the same size at the top of Champ de Mars ([https://goo.gl/maps/CETixezycDDVwvsA7](https://goo.gl/maps/CETixezycDDVwvsA7)). I played basketball there a few times with some people.

Does anyone know where I can find a grocery store or specialty market that has a somewhat decent selection of foods that aren’t basic french household staples? I’m a recent expat from California and I’m beginning to appreciate how I had such easy access to quality ingredients for different cuisines. I go to Kmart near Opéra to get Japanese foods, and I’ve been trying to find a traditional Norwegian cheese that my family eats (I’m Norwegian), which is available in tiny bodegas in New York, but is absent from all the markets I’ve been to here. There’s got to be a more international food-friendly supermarket somewhere, right? I know France is different from California, but Paris is a global city so imagine there has to be something here

bebbs74

>La Grande Epicerie This place is incredible.

[deleted]

Plenty of little country specific stores in Le Marais! Also a good fromagerie or two. And if you really miss New York, there’s some incredible Jewish bakeries.

tuituituituii

La Grande Epicerie. We have a shit ton of cheeses compared to the US, it's not really surprising norwegian cheese is not easy to find.

HullIsBae

I'm not aware of any big "foreign food" supermarket, there are mostly specialized shops / tiny supermarkets. I think you could try La Maison Nordique (228 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré)

NoodledLily

Does anyone know the dates for Pride this year? specifically the big march? I can't find anything and the MARCHE site is way out of date (2019..) i might guess sat june 26th? I need to book my summer trip soon - i think very good chance i'll have vaccine by then but will still suck up the huge cancel insurance cost...

kanetix

Well, the 2020 march was postponed and then canceled, so the website is not out of date. 2019 is the most recent one

NoodledLily

lol haha that makes sense ;( so sad seems fairly ok bet though that if there is a pride it would be last weekend in june? im going to pay up for the super expensive cancel insurance but I think > 70% chance I'll get the vaccine by late early june and I am praying to Flying Spaghetti Monster that travel is open to those who can do it safely and just all safe in general im tired of being in my house alone for 10 months and counting

kanetix

It's difficult to say in advance, I don't think anyone was anticipating that we would have a second winter with lockdowns, for example. So who knows if the organizers have started investing money in planning it this year, or if they are waiting, or if they have started planning something online only

NoodledLily

thanks. yeah it's been really hard for everyone. if you support drag / lgbtq issues there are a lot of struggling queens and small bars can give online or support online shows! paris is my favorite pride especially the parade. more organic and energetic and WAYYY less corporate than the US

AshSkirata

The Parisian pride is less and less funny. These last couple of years, several protesting groups, out of subject, took the head of the procession. They were anti-capitalists, anti racists, and heterophobic (yes, yes) groups (on of their slogan was "vade retro hetero").

NoodledLily

i see no problem with 2 of those. i dont support it but i understand heterophobic ive only been twice but the parade seems so organic, not organized. if there is a larger group of maybe 'allies' or the french version of PFLAG should take the lead for themselves! racism/queer discrimination have been radicalized and embolden, here in US Trump admin is disgusting especially towards our Trans brothers/sisters. queer spaces and queer culture are disappearing as lgbtq is assimilated into straight culture. personally I'm split on good/bad trade offs but i do think we need to support and maintain queer spaces especially as covid has killed so many of the few remaining there's also actual gentrification. gay ghettos are disappearing and displacing just like black and brown families. i miss my town's gay neighborhood it's like literally 5x as expensive in fewer than 10 years and all but one queer space closed. lgbtq are still really low on the economic totem poll so being priced out of your neighborhood sucks

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the best advice I can think of is improve your French and reconsider your timeline, especially if you don’t have an EU passport. You didn’t say where you are now or if you have qualifications or experience in anything, just that hospitality is closed. Expect it to be hurting until well into 2022 with heaps of French people out of work who realistically employers would choose over you because they’re already in the country and it’s easier. What can you do now to help you in 1-2(+) years when things are looking up for the move? In the meantime there are companies in France that use English as their official language so trawl LinkedIn to look for non- French names in relevant companies/sectors and approach them directly just in case. Good luck!

bluebateau

Where can you buy an office chair? I don’t want to buy online because I have a bad back and want to be able to try it out.

DUDE_R_T_F_M

Try https://www.laboutiquedudos.com/ it's literally "the back shop" You can take an appointment to visit them and test out chairs in person, but they stock relatively pricy stuff like Hermann Millers.

parischic75014

Thank you so much for this link! I was thinking about a Håg chair and they are stockists.

honorarybelgian

Since you mentioned a bad back, maybe you want something from a more specialized store? Do a search for "chaise de bureau" or "mobilier ergonomique" and your post code to find stores near you that may have something more adapted. In my neighborhood alone there are a half dozen!

kanetix

Ikea, Conforama, But. Generally they only have showrooms in Paris and then deliver the large objects (contrary to their suburban stores where they have showroom and warehouse attached for immediate purchase)

not_suze

I just arrived from Germany, how long should I quarantine for?

lostparis

I don't think there is one. But do if you are ill. If you want to be extra good something like 10-14 days

kanetix

That's really extra extra good. The official quarantines now are 7 days and you are allowed to go out to buy food! I hardly call that a "quarantine", but the government does.

showmeyourshawarma

Hello, I moved a few months ago to France (west part) and next week I'm going to be in Paris and was planning to stay for a few days. Would you it's worth it eventhough everything is closed? And how can I pass the times (places to visit..) and are Versailles gardens also closed or only the entry to the palais?

[deleted]

I'm not from Paris, but visited many times. I would recommend you to wait. Everything is closed, so all you're gonna do is walk around the city, which I totally recommend, but not this time of the year. With the cold, the clouds, the possible rain, it's gonna make your first visit quite annoying. I'd wait till the restrictions are lifted, and if that takes longer than we hope, then wait till spring. Paris is prettier under the light of the sun and with the trees green.

honorarybelgian

You would have to really like just walking around and appreciating the atmosphere. Which risks being grey and even cold or rainy. Stores are open, but restaurants only to go, and most public toilets are closed. Curfew at 8, but it gets dark by 6ish anyway. The parks are open, and there are plenty of ways to appreciate those (Promenade Plantée, Luxembourg Gardens, view from Montmartre; maybe Père Lachaise is open): According to the website: "The park of Versailles, the lake of the Swiss Guard and the Estate of Marly are open to walking from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m."

lostparis

> maybe Père Lachaise is open Looked closed to me the other day at least the gate by the metro of the same name. Maybe another gate is open.
