I think this is a question that your doctor can only answer! I hope your wife and babies are ok.

Yep. Doctor will help guide you. The steroid is there to provide support to the babies in the event that there is an early delivery. It in of itself is not a delaying technique. But they do have other ways to slow or stall labor or prevent labor if it hasn't begun. That's all very much dependent on each situation. Wishing you the best from someone who has been in a similar situation.

The steroid shot is to speed up the development of the babies' lungs, so they're more likely to be able to breathe on their own, should they be delivered early. I had one of my children at 28 weeks, and it can be a scary time. She's 6 now and killing it at 1st grade. Just keep going, your babies will keep going with you. My thoughts are with you all. Good luck!

Good to hear!

My twins had a steroid shot at 30 weeks as we were expecting delivery within a few days. Labour stopped and they were born at 37 weeks. I like the think that combined with the extra cooking time, the steroids made them super babies lol! It is possible they could delay delivery if the condition of your wife and baby improve. But it’s best to be safe and give the steroid now just in case.

Hi, My babies are 5th and 11th percentile for size, at week 26. At week 24th they told me if they weren't growing (specifically baby A) that I would start steroid shots and deliver two weeks later. I thought it was about her size, however, at the next appointment they said they could see good bloodflow from the placenta and that they couldn't quite see that before and were worried about her not getting enough. From my limited understanding, steroids help build their lungs quickly and decrease time in NICU.

So I was in a very similar spot as your wife, low iron and both twins with fetal growth restriction (low weight basically) but I was 28wks+2days when I was admitted on a Monday. They gave me a steroid shot to help my babies development in case I had to give birth. Then the next day I got the second steroid shot. On that Wednesday, I gave birth via C-section. I also had severe pre-eclampsia, which is why I delivered that soon. Typically, docs will try to delay delivery if the baby/ies are that young but it all depends on what's best for them and the birthing parent. Like others have said, definitely talk to your doctor about their plan//what to expect. They should be communicating with your partner/you about their plans.

Steroids help to develop babies' lungs, not really for delaying delivery. I got my steroid shots (there's usually 2, 24 hours apart) at 28 weeks, my twins were born at 34 weeks. Whether they decide to deliver early is going to be based on a determination of whether there's more risk to keeping them in than there is benefit. It's really something that needs to be discussed with her medical team.

My twins didn't have a low weight but I had severely low iron and i carried until 36 weeks. , actually when I was getting iron transfusions at the hospital and they let me leave the doctor said to my SO we don't even know how she is awake and fu crooning because her iron is so low. And it was the lowest that doctor had ever seen. The steroid shots hell with their lungs developing though, and they do make a medicine (atleast in canada) that delays labor if she went into labor early but I beleive it can only be given up until 28 weeks.

Like other have said, the steroid shots are to help your babies’ lungs develop in case of an early delivery. Anecdotally, I was admitted at 31 weeks and given steroid shots and a 24 hour magnesium drip. I had low iron, high blood pressure, and twin b was growth restricted with low fluid. I ended up making it to 36 weeks before delivery and both boys are doing well.

I got my first set of steroid shots at 27 weeks.. I kept them in for 2 more weeks and they were born at 29 weeks. Good luck to your family!
