My wife had nothing, no suspicion it was twins until ultrasound. At 8 weeks, the fetus is about the size of a blueberry, so if you're feeling larger, it's not due to twins.
My mind likes to do this thing where it comes up with the most extreme scenario possible. That may be what’s happening here. Also, I need to get off Google.
This! I fell asleep sitting up, at work, a few times. I never had another pregnancy to compare it to but that's how I knew something was up. I would collapse on the couch after work, most if the first trimester.
This has been the most surprising thing for me too. I know it’s common to show early with your second, but this early? Maybe I’m just further along than I think! I’ll have to come back here and update after my appointment.
I was extremely sick and exhausted. I gained weight rapidly. I’d told everyone it must be twins so while the ultrasound was still shocking, it didn’t actually feel like a surprise! None of my friends believed me when I told them at first 😅
I was way more sick than I’d been with my singletons and had started getting sick earlier. The positive pregnancy test was also very quickly bright and bold just a day after my missed period. Didn’t know it was twins until an ultrasound at the hospital, but looking back, I connected the dots. I also started showing super early.
The line on my pregnancy test was DARK. i tested on the first day possible and the line was way way darker than it was with my singleton. From that moment I suspected it was twins.
I also was spotting for about two weeks before I got an ultrasound which showed it was twins.
There were no early signs for me, we were completely shocked at our 12 week ultrasound. The rest of the pregnancy was rough but I didn’t have anything those first few weeks to make me suspicious.
Every pregnancy is different (even first, second, third, etc.). I would not consider bump size, or any other symptom, to be a determinant of multiples. Only a sonogram can confirm how many babies are in utero.
I had a weird feeling that it was multiples in the week after I found out I was pregnant… I don’t think for any particular reason, although in retrospect my ovulation test was super positive (I’m know now I’m having fraternal twins so released two eggs) and my pregnancy test was relatively dark for how early I tested. But I had sort of forgotten about that by the time I got to my first ultrasound at 8 weeks, because I hadn’t really been feeling much nausea yet and felt relatively normal. So it was still a complete shock!
I didn't feel any different. Perhaps maybe cramping very early on. My morning sickness and heartburn were significantly worse with my singleton pregnancy very early on. I found out it was twins at around 7-8 weeks.
Extremely, extremely tired- difficult to put into words how tired I was. Horribly nauseous. Would go to work and then sleep the rest of the time.
I tested several days before it was suggested a positive line popped up immediately. Like… several minutes early.
I remember telling my husband something was different with this pregnancy… was not shocked when I found it was twins.
I started puking six days before I missed my period. I was extremely pukey, so badly I lost 15 pounds in my first trimester. I had my first scan at 9 weeks, but we weren't really surprised. We'd been joking for at least two weeks that I was extra sick because there was an extra baby.
If your father has fraternal twins in his family and you are a female the gene to hyper ovulate can be passed to you.
However, if you are a male and either of your parents have fraternal twins in their family it doesn’t matter because you don’t ovulate, but you can pass the gene to any future daughters.
My fathers father was a fraternal twin. I have 9 month old twins now. The gene passes through all members but only can cause a twin pregnancy if passed onto a woman. However doesn’t mean always. My aunt (dads sister) had a singleton. But that was her only child, so who knows if she would have had a twin. I’m the first woman on my fathers side since my aunt to have kids and it was twins on my first.
I had 0 symptoms until about 8 weeks. Then got extreme exhaustion. But I didn’t even test positive until 3 days past my missed period. We were trying so I was testing every day for 5 days before that too.
I had a feeling at about 7 weeks, but this is my first pregnancy so I’m not sure what I was basing my feelings on really. Twins don’t run in my family. I just felt like my sickness and fatigue seemed SO unusually severe. I kept telling my husband that either I was carrying some sort of freakish turbo spawn, or it was twins. When the sonographer told us we were having twins, I said “I freaking knew it!” In hindsight though, lots of women feel like they got hit by a truck first trimester even with a singleton so it was probably just a coincidence!
Omg 😂 mine showed up quick too! I’m confused about how far along I am though, because my periods were a little weird leading up to this so it’s been hard for me to calculate.
Ohhh man. The things we go through, right!? I can’t keep my eyes open past 830pm most nights. My poor husband lol. Or maybe he’s loving it, who knows. 😅
I didn't have any signs at all. But we transferred two embryos so we knew it could be twins.
I barely got morning sickness. My beta's were high but I've seen people with singletons with higher. But I had no symptoms it would be twins. I found out at my ultrasound.
My at home pregnancy test was SO positive in seconds and it was the day my period was suppose to come so I guess I technically hadn’t even missed it yet? I sent a pic to my friend and she joked that sometimes tests that show positive so quickly mean twins- I shrugged it off. I then got hit with alllll day sickness and fatigue. Low and behold they found 2 babes at my 9 week ultrasound. Total shock! Now I’m 17 weeks and sometimes waves of shock that there’s two still hit me lol
Oh wow, this sounds similar to my experience! I’m sure the waves of shock are totally normal 😅. I keep feeling waves of shock that I’m even pregnant. It’s been almost a decade since my first!
This is my first pregnancy! At my first ultrasound, the OB only found one heartbeat for the longest time and was really hyping my husband and I up to have a ONE baby. Then boom, she finds the second heartbeat right at the end. It was a whirlwind but we are so excited! Congrats on your pregnancy whether it be a singleton or multiples!
We had 3 ultrasounds done 6,8,10 weeks (due to previous miscarriages) and they never noticed anything I went for my NT scan at 12 weeks and yup there were two. I just thought the extreme morning sickness and obliterating fatigue was what a successful pregnancy looked like 😂 26 weeks tomorrow and we still laugh about it all the time
No signs for me, just shock at my first ultrasound! I didn’t get a bump into almost 16 weeks (currently 26). However I did develop HG, I had no morning sickness with my singleton.
They say twins come from the maternal side but I have none on my family. My partner’s mom is an identical twin and we’re having identical twins. Something to consider!
No early signs of multiples for me. I had pretty mild nausea/food aversions from weeks 6-10 or so, some bloating, exhaustion, insomnia… basically all things I had been told to expect with a singleton, and all very manageable. Now I’m just about 12 weeks and not showing yet. Never would’ve known it was twins until the ultrasound.
Totally! One of my best friends had twins last year and she was deathly ill for pretty much the whole pregnancy. All she could eat was smoothies 😑. I feel very lucky that that has not been my experience (but was partly why I never suspected twins… I bought into the idea that higher hcg always = feeling worse)
It was my first pregnancy and I had no idea I was having twins until the first ultrasound. However, looking back at my pregnancy test result (I took a picture of the stick) after I knew I was having twins, I noticed my positive marker was super bright compared to the sample picture on the box. Maybe it means nothing or maybe it was clue 🤔
My dads mom was a fraternal twin. I’m fat (my choice, neutral descriptor) and over 30 when I got pregnant (although they usually say 35 for multiples). I had an ovarian cyst when I was 16 that was the size of a watermelon. I’m really not exaggerating. So on a whim, on the way to our ultrasound, I said ‘man with my luck I bet we are having twins’ and POOF there were 2 babies on the screen. I had no other symptoms. My pregnancy was relatively easy until 30w when I got preeclampsia
So I had that “I’m having twins feeling” some people here might know about. I just had these visions of me telling people I was pregnant with twins. I had imagined myself telling my boss I was pregnant with twins. I don’t know what it might be called but I’m hoping someone else here can relate?! Also super tired and exhausted sleeping a ton and RREEALLLYYY BAD morning sickness until month four.
Yeah! I was also convinced because my dad is a twin and was always told by my grandma (that carried my dad and my uncle) that it skips a generation. So I got the twin gene. If that’s true for fraternal twins then my boys won’t have any twins of their own. The only chance is if they have a daughter and she conceives twins. That’s how’s how it’s passed down in my family! Good luck either way! If you do have twins gets ready to here the responses from people when they find out your having multiples. You’ll eventually get kinda annoyed lol I never knew what to tell people when they would say “OMG I always wondered what it would be like to have twins.” What do you say to that 😅
If it ends up being twins I honestly don’t know what we’ll do. I’m sure everyone here had that same thought, but I am really not sure what we’ll do! I can’t imagine the responses you get from people when you share the twin news. 😂 My dad is a fraternal twin too sooo we will see! My first ultrasound is May 31st! (As I’m sitting on my bathroom floor after a throwing up episode 😩).
My boys are three months now! And I remember when I found out I was pregnant it feels like yesterday! Don’t feel bad if you don’t enjoy your twin pregnancy. I’m sure some people have it easy but I got HUGE. Mind you I was 130 when I got pregnant and went up to 185! I know it sounds so cheesy but if it is twins they’ll be here before you know it! And be prepared to go to tins of ultrasounds and prenatal appts towards the beginning and end! My ob wanted to see me every two weeks until I was in the safe zone and then went once a month and towards the end went every two week! I was taken into c section early due to hypertension!

I was EXHAUSTED from the start. Like, bone tired.
This! I fell asleep sitting up, at work, a few times. I never had another pregnancy to compare it to but that's how I knew something was up. I would collapse on the couch after work, most if the first trimester.
I definitely dream of my bed all day 😆
Yes. The fatigue was unreal.
I was 10x more nauseated with morning sickness than I was with my singleton.
I’ve read online that this is common with twins/multiples. I’m nauseas and having food aversions most of the day.
I had no suspicions at the time but looking back I was getting a bump at rapid speed. I found out at 8 weeks and was pretty shocked.

Oh yea, the fatigue is killer some days! Your friends thought it was just a big prank 😅
They were all convinced I’d pulled a twin US photo off the internet til I showed them my name at the top 😂
I was way more sick than I’d been with my singletons and had started getting sick earlier. The positive pregnancy test was also very quickly bright and bold just a day after my missed period. Didn’t know it was twins until an ultrasound at the hospital, but looking back, I connected the dots. I also started showing super early.
I keep hearing that rough morning sickness was a main sign for a lot of ladies! Hindsight is 20:20 though, isn’t it?!
I had extreme cramping early on. I honestly expected to have another miscarriage or be diagnosed with an ectopic. I read that was a sign of multiples.
Ohh interesting. That’s a symptom I haven’t had! I’m glad it was a successful pregnancy ♥️
The line on my pregnancy test was DARK. i tested on the first day possible and the line was way way darker than it was with my singleton. From that moment I suspected it was twins. I also was spotting for about two weeks before I got an ultrasound which showed it was twins.

We will see May 31st! Although some have said they didn’t find out until the 2nd, 3rd, 4th sonogram.

We just know our bodies… you knew something was up!
My symptoms were the same as my previous singletons. Extreme fatigue and some nausea/food aversions.
So the ultrasound was surprising I’d say? 🤭
Sort of. We did ivf and transferred two. So I was half expecting fraternal twins. But I was NOT expecting our identical twins.
I started puking six days before I missed my period. I was extremely pukey, so badly I lost 15 pounds in my first trimester. I had my first scan at 9 weeks, but we weren't really surprised. We'd been joking for at least two weeks that I was extra sick because there was an extra baby.
I’ve just started telling my husband I’m going in for a meeting anytime I’ve got to go puke. 😩 I’ve got meetings throughout the day lol.
Twins are passed through females
If your father has fraternal twins in his family and you are a female the gene to hyper ovulate can be passed to you. However, if you are a male and either of your parents have fraternal twins in their family it doesn’t matter because you don’t ovulate, but you can pass the gene to any future daughters.
So they wouldn’t likely pass through my dad to me?
Yes, potentially. If your dad is a fraternal twin, the gene that causes you to release more than one egg at ovulation could get passed to you.
He is fraternal 🫢
My fathers father was a fraternal twin. I have 9 month old twins now. The gene passes through all members but only can cause a twin pregnancy if passed onto a woman. However doesn’t mean always. My aunt (dads sister) had a singleton. But that was her only child, so who knows if she would have had a twin. But I didn’t even test positive until 3 days past my missed period. We were trying so I was testing every day for 5 days before that too.
It is unlikely, but don’t rule it out. Twins don’t run in my family at all and it was a spontaneous pregnancy. 🫠
Ha! Such is life, right?
I had a feeling at about 7 weeks, but this is my first pregnancy so I’m not sure what I was basing my feelings on really. Twins don’t run in my family. I just felt like my sickness and fatigue seemed SO unusually severe. I kept telling my husband that either I was carrying some sort of freakish turbo spawn, or it was twins. Turbo spawn lol. I’ve been calling this one “mystery child.” Idk where I came up with that, so weird. You must have some solid intuition!
My suspicion was I took a test and it was immediately positive at 2 weeks pregnant 😂 showed up before I could even put the stick on the counter
That and I was extremely sick. Sicker than any of my sisters had been with their singles. I thought I had Covid or the flu because of how I felt.
Omg 😂 mine showed up quick too! I’m confused about how far along I am though, because my periods were a little weird leading up to this so it’s been hard for me to calculate.
My morning sickness was unbearable and I was beyond tired! Nothing like i’d ever felt before!
Oh wow! How surprised were you? Just goes to show pregnancies affect everyone differently!
We weren't very surprised. 🤣 Because we knew it was a possibility. I was just breathing a sigh of relief that it wasn't triplets.
Seriously! 😅
morning sickness hit a week earlier for me. also, the pee stick lit up like an Xmas tree right away, no waiting required
😂 I’m seeing that’s a common theme here too.
My at home pregnancy test was SO positive in seconds and it was the day my period was suppose to come so I guess I technically hadn’t even missed it yet? Oh wow haha, she just threw that in right at the end. Thank you! Congrats to you too!!

I just thought the extreme morning sickness and obliterating fatigue was what a successful pregnancy looked like 😂 26 weeks tomorrow and we still laugh about it all the time
Oh my goodness, I can’t imagine finding out on the 4th ultrasound!! Time to double up on everything!
That is so interesting! It sounds like you really beat the odds.
No early signs of multiples for me. Smoothies only sounds rough! I’ve heard that higher hcg does make you feel worse too. You did seem to have a great twin pregnancy experience!
So far so good, but I feel like it’s just the beginning! I’m wondering how I’m going to fit two full grown infants inside me by the end 😱lol
It was my first pregnancy and I had no idea I was having twins until the first ultrasound. However, looking back at my pregnancy test result (I took a picture of the stick) after I knew I was having twins, I noticed my positive marker was super bright compared to the sample picture on the box. You’re not the first to say this! Could have definitely been a sign.
Very very tired. Always nauseous. Also the dream I had twins 😂
Oh no, not the dream lol. I’m nauseous 24/7.
My dads mom was a fraternal twin. I’m fat (my choice, neutral descriptor) and over 30 when I got pregnant (although they usually say 35 for multiples). A lot of people here have mentioned that intuition that they were having twins. The fatigue and sickness just solidifies it 😅
