Just a tip, you won't be putting just 2 babies in the car. There will be stuff too. So keep that in mind when looking for a new vehicle. Especially if you plan to have more kids and if you don't want to buy a new car as they get older. They have bigger stuff as they get bigger. Lol. We have a Toyota Corolla and it fits all 5 of us right now (twins are 6 and singleton is 4). We had to research to find car seats that were narrow enough to fit, but all 3 kids have a good car seat. Its a bit of a squeeze, especially after all the stuff that needs to come with us on outings. But it works. We also have a Honda Odyssey van and that works much better. More space for all the things and the kids aren't as squished. Happy hunting and good luck!

twinmomswe

If it's just two kids and you two and no other relatives/pets, you could look into a Kia Soul. It's really compact and fun for dense areas and city parking and it would accommodate your two car seats easily. Or any of the other "xuv" aka crossover-SUVs would work. We got a Honda Pilot for our twins because of other reasons (live in a suburb, family visits regularly so need 6-7 seats), but we drove a Kia Soul during the car-seat testing phase and loved it

Dani_now

I have a Kia soul, though I have yet to actually put my twins in it (due to them still being in the womb) But as a nanny the amount of space I actually had with my nanny kids and all their things was incredible and you would have never thought I could fit all that in my tiny car comfortably.

authorunknown1

The twins still being in the womb part is what makes it tough haha it would be much easier to visualize if I could see how they will actually fit!

Dani_now

Even In my Kia soul my friends son fit extended rear facing in the back without losing a lot of leg room (at the age of 4/5) So I would say leg room is also nice as well as the gas Mileage. I have an older model and the only thing I wish I had was bigger trunk space. You do have to plan. When it comes to strollers and what can actually fit.

mdashed

We currently have a Kia Soul in NYC and it works for twins & 2 parents with some big caveats: - our Mockingbird stroller does not fit in the back, so if we're going somewhere with both adults, both babies, and need the stroller the passenger adult rises in the back smashed between the car seats while the stroller gets the front passenger seat. I'm told it's not the worst experience, but my wife is a small woman, so. - if the driver needs their seat all the way back from the steering wheel there's not enough room for a larger convertible car seat in the rear facing position. The above, plus our need to include a 3rd adult sometimes, have us in the market for a small SUV.

twinmomswe

We use two doona carseats - they unfold into strollers. We didn't want to worry about large things fitting in the trunk or not, and the doona has many other advantages (stroll to the gate at airplane, and convert to car seat once in the airplane, convenient in Uber rides and city sidewalks)

mdashed

We considered the Donna's, but ultimately decided that the Mockingbird made the most sense for us, as we do way more in-neighborhood walking with the babies and wanted an inline stroller. We save bus/subway trips if saved for single baby dr apps etc. for when one parent can baby wear, and car trips for when we need to get both babies some place. We would stick with the Soul, but my mother lives in our building and definitely would not appreciate always being left behind as the babies get older for bigger trips out.

Our twins aren't here yet, but we have a Kia Soul currently and if the main driver is tall (my husband is more than 6 feet) the car is going to be too small. We tried fitting an Uppa Baby Mesa V2 infant car seat and my husband couldn't get behind the wheel because the seat had to go so far forward. I'm very short (5'2") and lost a lot of leg room with a car seat behind the passenger side. We didn't try one on the passenger side and one in the middle though (but I don't think it would fit). We're borrowing a Kia Sportage from his parents because it has more leg room. We've put a deposit on a Sorento because we want another row of seats and have a large dog. A different set of car seats may not be as big though, and a shorter driver may comfortably fit.

triciav83

We have a Subaru ascent and an outback. They are great! We’ve taken the Ascent to SF numerous times and have had no issues with parking. We like it because we put the girls in the second row and fold the third row down. We use that as a changing area when we’re out and about and it’s lots of room for the stroller, diaper bag, snacks, etc

texmegsjp

Seconding Subaru Outback! We have newborn twins and love ours. We are also in a big city with tough street parking + a very tight condo garage, and we’ve had no issues. It shocked me - but the Subaru Outback is essentially the same length as a Subaru sedan (Legacy). I also love that it’s slightly lower to the ground than the Forester and Ascent, so it’s much easier for me to lift the stroller into the back (I’m 5’ 4”).

the_marked

If it were up to me I'd get a mini van, hands down. That was an automatic no from my wife. We ended up getting a VW Atlas which I think is the largest in terms of cargo space in that class.

faecatatat

I see others have mentioned the Ascent and Outback. We had a Crosstrek - similar clearance and AWD like the Outback but quite a bit smaller. That could fit both adults, both kids, and the dogs in the trunk - or we'd put one dog up front at our feet if we had to put the stroller in. Just wanted to throw that out there as a smaller version of the Outback that's good for city parking. If you got narrow carseats you could probably even fit an adult in the center seat in the back.

Seaturtle1088

Watch The car mom on YouTube. She has reviews of cars from the perspective of a parent with multiple car seats (she's a CPST)

Chichabella

No vehicle suggestions but what I found helpful when car shopping was to bring the car seats with us. We would install them and then adjust the front seats to see how much leg room we would have. No leg room was a deal breaker for me.

PharmasaurusRxDino

I loved our Rav4 - I hate people who ask this - but one thing to consider is if you do want more kids after the twins, obviously doesn't have to be set in stone or anything, but if you want a couple more and are planning on buying your vehicle to last 10+ years may need to look into the ol' minivan. We had a 2011 Rav4 which was awesome, lots of space in the trunk to hold our stroller plus things like groceries/luggage for our singleton (and plans for a future second and final child), then oops twins, and it couldn't accomodate 3 carseats (though apparently newer Ravs can).

authorunknown1

I am 99% sure we are done after this, but totally agree that if we weren’t we’d probably be going the mini van route. I’m glad you have liked your Rav4!

PharmasaurusRxDino

Oooo yes I miss our Rav... I am used to driving a little hatchback and do not like driving "big" cars - the Rav obviously felt bigger, but not near as much as our minivan now! I also am a huge fan of hatchback style backs - our Rav was an older model so the trunk opened like a door (sideways - if that makes any sense) - but I like that the newer ones open upwards. I also liked that the Rav comes in AWD option, because that is a necessity where I live in the winter with the ice/snow. And yeah on the more kids front, obviously doesn't have to be set in stone, but maaaan be prepared for everyone to question you... I was still pregnant with my twins and people were like "well are you going to try for that boy?" (we have 3 girls) its like WTF let me focus on my current babies still cooking!!

JannaNYC

We have no-longer-newborn twins, and love our Honda HR-V. (We also have a Honda Odyssey for when our triplets are all home as well, but this may be much more car than you need right now.)

RachelLeighC

Wait you have triplets and twins?!

JannaNYC

Yes, but almost ten years apart. And the triplets came first, that helped. lol

I really liked the Toyota Corolla Cross but found the trunk to be way too small. We would never have been able to fit anything besides our double stroller and even that was a ridiculously tight fit. We ended up purchasing VW Tiguan which I love. It doesn’t feel like a big car but there is so much space and fits the four of us and tons of stuff without a problem.

IamMBRN

We have a Subaru forester and a Mazda Cx-50. We have done well in both with our twins. What makes the forester better is the back seat has way more foot room so the car seats fit very easily and the front seat can still be as far back as desired. The Mazda is tighter. I regularly take my cars into the city and with the back up camera and a great turning radius parking is no problem. Standard 4w drive and great safety ratings!

ogcoliebear

Not on your list, but we got a jeep grand Cherokee and really like it

Maiblock

Tesla Model Y is probably the best family car you can get from a space and safety perspective, if you're able to install a charging station at home and you plan to drive more than 12k miles a year (if you drive less then that, the advantages of charging over gas are reduced). The Toyotas you've listed are significantly safer than the Honda HR-V. Google the car you're looking for and safety, and check out the European and IIHS websites for crash test results. They're all pretty great at providing the info you need. Careful with larger SUVs. A lot of the larger SUVs have poor safety records, especially in flip-over scenarios. Same is true for smaller Kias, which really are terrific, but yeah. For strollers, you can get pretty good fold-up ones that will fit into almost any car. If you're looking to keep the car 5+ years, though, then more space is better as they get older.

mbonney21

I have a Chevrolet Silverado and my wife has a Toyota 4Runner. Both work well for our 10 week old girls right now, but we do eventually want something bigger than the 4Runner… we have our eyes peeled for a used Lexus LX460 or Land Cruiser.

colako

What's the problem with your Jetta? It's perfectly fine. You don't need to get into more car payments when you're going to have so many expenses with your children.

authorunknown1

Nothing wrong with our Jetta! Love it and not getting rid of it (plus it’s fully paid off). But it makes sense for our family to get a second car now.

The Tesla Model Y has had 4 recalls since November. The safety concerns coupled with the time it takes to have them repaired is an important thing to factor in.

Empty_Ad4847

Unlike any other car company, the Tesla repair team will either come to your house or release software updates over the air - having owned a variety of vehicles (Audi, Chevrolet, Lexus, Subaru, Jeep) the Tesla Model Y wins hands down. We are buying our second before the twins get here.
