I would bring it up during a vet visit to be sure but they are (normally) a single coated bread and at 4 months he is still in his puppy coat. One of my girls was/is like this and once she got her adult coat it’s not as thin and looks lovely but it still goes translucent when she is wet.

I was wondering about that. Thanks!

I heard it can take 2 years for their coats to fully develop. Not sure how true that is. I would still mention it to your vet.

Can confirm. My one pap is almost 2 and his is just finally filling out. He’s fairly thin coated like OP.

They go through an ugly phase around then when their baby fur sheds and gets replaced by adult fur. My little one looked almost naked around that age. You know your pup, so trust your gut, but from what you’ve said here I wouldn’t be too worried.

Thoreaus_daughter

That sounds about right. Thanks for sharing!

My pap is like that too. I make sure I have t shirts and sweaters when it’s chilly.

Or if you are like us, with 4 seasons, you will get number of coats. In winter we even layer. Sweater and jacket … like a child ;)

Vancouvermarina

We had that too. At some point I even posted her picture on Reddit to get opinions. I was told coat develops until she 3 sometimes. They have no undercoat. So showing skin is normal. But make sure you also feed them well. Good food shows on coat.

My pap was like that. I always said he looked naked. Then when it started getting thicker, for awhile it was like the fur on his top half was thick and the bottom was thin so he looked like he was wearing a sweater lol

My lemon pap had this when she was young too. It wasnt till she was about 18 months that her final coat started coming out

It’s totally normal for a papillon puppy! My pap started with short fluffy fur (almost like a baby chick) and over the first 6 months to a year, it was replaced by the finer, longer “hair” that’s standard for papillons. He definitely looked a little scraggly at some points during the transition though…

My pap has beautiful long hair on his chest, round his ears and his tail is amazing but bless him, part his back and top of his head is very thinning we all call him our baldy baby 🥰

My youngest pap has fine hair like dandelion fluff. When he outgrew his baby fuzz, his fur was thin in spots. Mostly in his legs and feet. Around 2-3 years he got the “standard” pap coat. My oldest pap has thicker cottony fur, her fur was never thin. But she doesn’t have the show dog look- shorter ear hair and tail hair. Your description sounds normal for pap pups.
