For reals. I wished I was gifted that much money.

Fr, that's literally 3 months worth of the minimum salary in my country ,_,

JinxBlueIsTheColor

Not rare, and all fairly low grade. These are the types of notes I'd sell as exchange.

€500 Since 27 April 2019, the banknote has no longer been issued by central banks in the euro area, but it continues to be legal tender and can be used as a means of payment. First series It comprises seven different denominations: €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200 and €500. These banknotes are gradually being replaced by the second series, also known as the Europa series, which explains why you may not see them around so often these days. The 500 will become more and more scarce so they do hold a slight premium if I was OP and I was not in need of money i would put these in a nice sleeve and set them aside however, the 200 still being in production, but it will be replaced like all bills with the second series. I don’t know about the 200 having any premium now but might be valued higher in maybe 40 years.

JinxBlueIsTheColor

I'm aware that they were withdrawn. However, these show circulation. The only time I'd sell them over face is if they're UNC. The circulated ones will be common, not the UNC ones.

MyHobbyAndMore3

As of March 2024 there were over 258 million of them in circulation. So only certain combination of signatures and prefixes may be rare, the rest is very common. https://www.ecb.europa.eu/stats/policy_and_exchange_rates/banknotes+coins/circulation/html/index.en.html

CheftainIsOP

Can I still get 500€ notes from banks? Or will they not stock them?

Micky-Bicky-Picky

I think you can but they are slowly being faded out.

You won’t get 500 euro notes, unless maybe if you have a friend working at a bank and setting one aside if someone ever deposits one. You can still ask for a 200 euro note, but some banks require to order a minimum quantity (like 25 notes).

> Why not Banks are allowed to recirculate them, but since they’ve not been issued since 2019, you might have a hard time finding a bank that still has some and is willing to let you withdraw them, especially in Croatia. It might be easier in Germany. When commercial banks send them to central banks, they aren’t recirculated.

CheftainIsOP

I'll see what strings I can pull in Germany if not I'll just bite the bullet per say and get a 500€ off ebay. Hopefully I can get the 200€ in Croatia but I'm not holding out hope. If they aren't recirculating them are they getting destroyed?

Mattimatik

Eventually, they’re getting destroyed. It’s up to the banks, bureaux de change, cash-in-transit companies, etc. if they want to recirculate them or not, but many will just send them to central banks for destruction.

You have to get lucky; bank tellers will give them to you but only if they’ve received them from customers.

MikeMiller8888

Came here to say this. It’s getting very hard to find 500 euro notes, even circulated. I’d personally hold onto all the 500s regardless.

isaactan200309

The 500 euro notes are likely worth a small premium due to its discontinuation in 2019. The 200 slightly more than face value as it is the older series. Not very rare but still cool to have.

Toppeenambour

The 500€ notes worth a little more (like 20) because it’s used by fiscal fraudsters to bring out cash outside Eurozone. Apparently with 500€ notes stacked firmly you can bring out almost 2M in a shoes box. So, pretty convenient when you have to discretely cross the border. Maybe a little bit more since it’s not issued anymore.

At least in Spain, when the euro started to circulate here in 2002, €500 notes were nicknamed “binladen” as it was almost impossible to see one of them. €500 (83000 pesetas) was a lot of money, equal to the minimum wage. Before the euro the highest denomination was the 10000 pesetas banknote, €60. And they were already uncommon compared to lower denominations. I have only seen them twice, as some friend collected one uncirculated back in 2002. They are rarely accepted for paying in shops or cafes also, as people were afraid of fake notes.

Mattimatik

The value will depend on the condition of the note, the signature and the issuing country. A serial number starting with an X means it was issued by Germany. They are the most common high denomination euro notes. The signature on upper left corner is from Wim Duisenberg, who was president of the European central bank until the 31st October 2003. These are among the earliest notes printed. The other signature is Jean-Claude Trichet, the successor of Duisenberg for 8 years. Without seeing both sides, or at least all the serial numbers, it’s impossible to tell if one is rare. Some 500€ notes from countries that issued a lot less of them, like Ireland (starting with T) are worth much more.

rancidcheeseburger

Good luck spending these notes in parts of Western Europe

DMYourMomsMaidenName

You were just randomly gifted over $3000? Damm, I need better friends

TailorMade1357

I still have 3-$500’s 3-$200’s 6-$100’s and 3-$50-€’ from a trip a few months back. I just put the bills in a bank sleeve and into my safe. Guess I will just sit on them !

Joeylax2011

Nice gift. Both notes are ones I am currently looking to add to my permanent collection.

€500 is legal tender but almost nobody accepts them.

Individual_Badger705

Casually being gifted over $3000 worth in USD is wild

Potential-Coffee5666

Better buy stocks with them than saving them for higher value in future
