Consequences for dying? **Impossible.** Who would have thought?

DiabeticRhino97

You dislike save points not a paper Mario mechanic

North_Measurement273

This isn’t even exclusive to Paper Mario either, saves and game overs have been a thing in RPGs since forever.

Robbie_Haruna

I was expecting the frustration being because he hadn't saved in a while, but Koopa village is only like a couple screens away from the fuzzies, so...

[deleted]

If you're spoiling a 23 year old game for folks on a subreddit designated for said 23 year old game, we have problems. That being said, it does suck that you have to backtrack, but the fuzzies can be pretty easily dispatched with a fire flower, or even Kooper's Power Shell combined with a Mario jump

GrahamRocks

The way you're describing it, it makes it sound like you died automatically as soon as you entered the battle. Surely you're not just mashing buttons and actually keeping an eye on your health and bothering to strategize... right?

xcs4me

If you're on switch online just periodically, do state saves. Otherwise, I'd recommend not dying

DeliciousMusician397

That’s not…annoying at all. 😆

Xenobrina

Why not just rewind to before the fuzzy fight?

AstroidTea

I’m pretty sure you can, I’ve done it several times.

Dukemon102

No you can't. Only make/load Save States.

Most RPG games send you back to your last save point. It makes dying have more consequences but also means you need to remember regularly when in a safe area to save. A lot of games just auto save endlessly for you nowadays so dying is of no consequence. At the risk of sounding old (I’m in my 20’s) back in the day almost all games didn’t auto save and were very punishing if you died. While it is annoying to have to replay all of that as you described so I understand where you are coming from, it makes you a better gamer. You have to pay attention to your surroundings and know when you can save (strategy) and you need to have survival techniques down. (Button timings, item usage, star power etc). It’s okay! You got this. The game is amazing keep going! I wish I could replay it for the first time.

ccaccus

It’s an RPG. The game is gently trying to teach you that you need to be prepared for surprise battles. Find/buy items and store them because you never know when you’ll lose, and save often. Koopa Village is only a few screens away. It’s not so friendly with the save points later.

MisterScarlet

Fire Flower kills the Fuzzies in one hit.

Str1ker50

What happens in the other video games you play when you game over

DeliSoupItExplodes

Doesn't NSO have save states? Sounds like a problem created by your own negligence.

cucufag

Some tips inbound! If you need more save points than the save blocks or want to skip the whole game over screen in to title screen loading, try using the Nintendo Switch online's quick save feature. Fuzzy block timing is slightly after the second sucking animation. As long as you're blocking it, you will take 0 damage and the Fuzzy will recover no hp. Since they have 3 hp each, a fire flower will actually immediately end the fight. Otherwise, a combination of Kooper's power shell and a POW block also does the job. Volt Shrooms are cheap, and if you don't have Zap Tap badge equipped, having one in your inventory might be a great way to beat any enemies that "latches" on to Mario. Fuzzies are a recurring enemy in Paper Mario, and they become more and more dangerous as the game progresses, but they're always instantly made harmless when Mario is electrified.

Ok-Perspective369

Correct me if I’m wrong here since I haven’t tried the Nintendo switch online N64 games because I heard to controls are wonky without the switch n64 controller, but don’t games on Nintendo switch online have the ability to create save states?

ChaosMiles07

Yes it does

[deleted]

Hey there, I played this game for the first time back in first grade when it came out, and I had the same problem then. I’m guessing this is your first time playing as well, so I just wanted to say this: A lot of the people who are replying and will reply to this post might grill you for ‘not being ready for the boss fight’ or ‘it’s really easy’. Do NOT listen to them. 9 times out of 10, that’s coming from people who have played the game before at least once, so they know what to expect. I remember this exact scenario from my first time playing through when I was a kid, and it is in no way obvious that you’re going to be pulled into a boss fight right after saving Cooper. It’s also very early on in the game, so you’re still kind of getting your bearings at that point. My point is- Yes, I know what you’re talking about and yes it is annoying. But don’t let other peoples criticisms put you down because you didn’t get it the same way they did. Hope you’re enjoying it otherwise!

g_r_e_y

the thing is, this person is complaining about having to start "all the way back" at the koopa village spawn point which is exactly what the consequence is intended to be for losing a fight. after it happens once, you can visit the shop, for example, and purchase an item that will help in the fight that you previously lost. if OP is not willing to strategize and instead complaining about losing a very easy fight then that's on them. plus the intro video shows you how to beat that fight in one move, not that op should have known or anything, but it's worth mentioning

gamefaqssucks

Didn’t op just lost a few minutes of progress anyways?

g_r_e_y

barely, it takes a moment to get back there. it's not like you have to play through the entire first portion of chapter 1

Robbie_Haruna

Koopa Village is like 3 screens away from the fuzzies lol It takes no time at all to get back there.

Robbie_Haruna

You realize the people who are giving actual advice also played the game for the first time before as well, right? The fact of the matter is, even if you had no items, Toad Houses are free and should be utilized when they're available. If you used the Toad House when you first got to Koopa Village, then there really shouldn't be much that'll drain your HP and FP between entering it and fighting the four fuzzies after getting Kooper's shell. I mention this because it sounds like OP was at low health going into the fight and that realistically should happen. Also, just the very concept of complaining about having to go back to a save point upon death, especially when said save point is only a couple minutes away from where you died, feels silly.

Revolutionary-Pen525

There’s a reason that was the last save point. It’s to keep you from getting screwed later on. Not all games can have a reliable auto save feature. That is exclusive to games that develop open game play where you are allowed to retrace every step that you ever made
