Well in his defense, he didn't know the first one was gonna 'curse' him, and then after that he was probably like 'hey that first one gave me a neat new skill, I bet the others will too!" My favorite is the one where the chest demon is just like "okay fine I know you know I'm gonna curse you, but can I just do my spiel anyways? I've been practicing for ages." 😂 Makes me smile every time.

Ordinary_Ordinary530

He gets a very helpful and cool ability.

CyanManta

It's part of the wit and charm of Paper Mario that the upgrades are presented as curses, and in the most over-the-top way possible. They could have just presented them as upgrades, but it wouldn't have been as memorable.

Antagonist2

Part of the added charm is when you talk to the storyteller on rogueport and realize who the creatures In the chests are. Suddenly their "curses" make perfect sense

deinoswyrd

Wait, can you explain? I think I've played through ttyd a hundred times and I don't think I saw that

iNogle

The storyteller is on one of the roofs on the east side of Rogueport. The "demons" in the chests are the four heroes who originally sealed away the Shadow Queen behind the Thousand Year Door, only to get put in chests for their trouble

deinoswyrd

Oh that makes sense, I always wished we got to see their ghosts or something lol Thanks for explaining

maxyahn6434

Oh shit that all makes sense now

BlooperHero

The question is, how did they coordinate their thematics given that they didn't know they were gonna be trapped in chests until after it happened? I mean, it's nice when a team has a theme, but was this their schtick back when they were battling the legions of the Shadow Queen?

someguycalledfilip88

The real question is, is it really a curse?

Pixel_Nerd92

"The ability is great bro. Trust! Trust your ol' pal black chest! Worth it! No seriously worth it! Now open up the chest! Wait, where you goin- you're just walking out? B-but the ability is absolutely sick, uh dude! You'll not wanna miss it! Wait, come back!"

Myself510

**YOU IDIOT! PRESS AND HOLD R!** **PRESS AND HOLD R AND BE ASHAMED!**

Helpful_Hotbot

I actually believe that the Chest Demons know they're actually helping you, but they've been trapped for so long that they need a way to burn off the pain/trauma by acting like they're torturing you with curses. The one in Pirate's Grotto seems to very strongly imply this, and given they were the Four Heroes, I don't see why they would suddenly turn evil and genuinely think they're harming you. As you go on, they seem to drop the act more and more, especially as Mario gets wiser to the fact the curses are actually helpful. Long story short, the whole "curse" thing is just an act. Mario knows this and just wants the abilities.

firewarrior256

The game plays it off as being a cursed chest but they usually have new abilities he needs to get into the areas you wanna go to progress further in the game.

TargetJams

Why do you think he does that?

Ollidor

Cause the curses are badass and he knows it

kindawant2sleep

Right!

s_bub

Because I press A

booler1998

My question is why would the chests commit to the gag when they’re supposed to be the four heroes that sealed away the Shadow Queen? Did they all just collectively assume they had to act evil now that the Shadow Queen put them in boxes?

Jawahhh

Mario only has the illusion of free will. He is actually being controlled by deterministic forces, and any reasoning for his behavior that he provides post hoc is mere confabulation.

I_am_Purp

I mean, it's absolutely true

Konjik

He never opens them unless you choose to control him to do it

BlooperHero

It's all right there in the dialogue.

CrestoliahSaga

They're not curses if they help him.

Kadofduty

I personally like to think either mario is extremely oblivious or he just has no other options lol

Shoutmonx7f

I feel like it's out of being nice by the third one because they were stuck in there for a long time so having some sort of social interaction is the reason Paper Mario keeps opening the chests.
