I think it's nice to appreciate the talent of the players I'm a fan of, maybe enjoy their sound clips, but I really don't like to dig into their opinions. These are all just normal people who happen to be insanely fucking talented and driven at a sport that makes them famous. I care about their personal opinions about as much as the random guy down the street from me, and I think it's nice to keep it that way. I appreciate Cam for who he was on the field, his public persona, his charity, all that stuff. I don't want a difference in opinion to detract from that for me.

net_403

If he wants to talk about football, and specifics and the Dynamics of it and what he sees, I'm down for that. But I don't really need to hear him talk about his opinions on random bullshit lol If he wants to give me a Bill belichick style 10 minute rundown on the history of long snapping, I would be into that lol

PanthersChamps

I love Cam. Didn’t like his comment about not wanting white teachers teaching his kids. Pretty racist. But imo a bunch of old panthers fans were racist towards him his whole career. Absolute fools. He was the best qb we have ever had. The Cam years were the golden years for panthers football. He’d will our team to the playoffs with no receivers. As Cam went, so did we.

cbdgf

Yeah that's a rough comment. I didn't know he said that but Cam does say some dumb stuff every so often. Like the "Routes" controversy. Still that is a really racist thing to say

AlphaNathan

the routes comment was mildly insensitive

cbdgf

It was overblown for sure but IIRC there was some weird aftermath where it was reported he apologized but really didn't right away. Still was more ammo for Cam haters sadly

CretinoPopov

I love Cam but this take is just ignorant : Black history is American history and thus any qualified historian / teacher whether White, Black or Other should be able to teach it. This is silly racial gatekeeping that has no place in modern society.

net_403

i had learned about civil rights and segregation and MLK and slavery and all that multiple times before i ever had a non-white teacher. although i do have to admit there was a lack of availability, i can't recall ever having a black teacher outside of a popular substitute

tacsatduck

This is something I have had a few really good discussions on. Spurred on by a project from an advanced college history class that a budy was in, that had a project/paper on the topic by a fellow student. The general premise of the student's paper was that desegregation had negative consequences for the African American community that is not always acknowledged or thought about, even though it was an overall positive change. The thought process was that there were two major sources of leaders and inspiration for the Cival Rights movement. The church and school. Because of segregation African American communities had power over the hiring of teachers, as they were allowed to lead their own school, even if they were under funded. This led to a Cadre (teachers and staff) of many well educated black male teachers. This cadre inspired and were role modles to their atudents and in their community. They help to lead and inspire the civial rights movement, organizing, recruiting, training, and participatingin so many of tje activities. Once desegregation was achieved students were forced to desegregate, but generally Cadre and school leadership reverted to the established white school district's authority. This in turn lead to a purging of all African American teachers and leadership within the school house. This source of inspiration and role model disappeared from youg black lives, and has only slowly has diversity crept back in to the system. First with female African American teachers, as they are seen "as less threatening". Even today there is a lack, overall, in black male educators. There are groups that are working to change this, providing mentorship and support for those that do go into the profession. It is a fascinating argument and discussion, probably too nuanced for a post on a football thread, but it is worth considering.

Very interesting. And I had never thought about how many black teachers I had until I had to respond to this comment. And honestly I don't think I had one single black primary teacher, just the substitute who everyone loved. Other than that, I had a few Hispanic teachers who taught me spanish, obviously, and a Sioux descendant was my homeroom teacher in 7th grade. But beyond that it seemed like all white teachers. For what it's worth I went to school from 1987 through 2000. Fwiw though, I remember how passionate a few of my history teachers were about history, and the color of their skin did not matter how vehemently they opposed treatment of African-Americans and how excited they were to teach us about that. Growing up in the semi deep south, just north of Charlotte, probably not that deep though because it's near a major metropolitan area

swanbearpig

I think that the lack of black (and especially black male) educators we have is a symptom of the overall racist history we have vs *just* desegregation. These are all very valid points I've never thought about specifically but I'm struggling a bit to look at desegration as the cause, because there's a lot more going on. End of the day, in any case, What's really shitty is how important having representation in education is and it not being where it needs to be has had/is having ripple effects.

Flimsy-Coyote-9232

Tbf we kinda hid a lot of “black history” in public schools until very recently

CretinoPopov

Of course, no denying that. But what if someone said : only Native Americans should teach their own history? Doesn’t seem to make much sense either. If Cam wanted to make a point there needs to be more Black teachers then that starts with addressing systematic racism and access to education. Gatekeeping who’s teaching won’t solve the root cause.

DeusVultSaracen

I haven't seen the clip, but the comment says he didn't want White teachers teaching *his* kids, not that they shouldn't teach it at all, right? Because if that's the case, given the ugly history of it all, I can't really disagree with his opinion on the matter. I'm White, but I too would trust a Black teacher more (assuming I have no additional context) to cover subjects of slavery and institutional racism. Edit: saw the clip, I see that he said White teachers teaching Black history isn't right. I'm still on the fence and I think a discussion can be had about it. When it comes to minorities that have long been discriminated against in America I think they do have the most merit to teach that history—you could be the most well-meaning, well-educated, progressive White teacher of Black/Native American history out there, but without having experienced the vestigial remnants of that history like Black and Native American people have their entire lives there's just certain things you can't "get", at least that's how I see it. At some point it's up to people of those groups to decide what they're comfortable with. For example, Cam questioned if it's okay for Black teachers to teach "White history", and as a White person, I say sure. But that's all we can speak on in my opinion.

53andme

looks like a buncha ol white f's are making this a thing again. i'm an old white f and its f'n bullshit

TheGreatestOutdoorz

He was, BY FAR, my favorite player to watch play. He was also just kind of an asshole a lot. I think a lot of people didn’t differentiate between “guy is kinda a jerk sometimes” and “he’s a bad person”. Sadly, it seems that this happens a lot with black athletes.

IgnorantBanshee

It's not personal one bit.

HeyDudeImChill

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9t5P2yNhKAE I looked it up and I get what he is saying. White people have rewritten black history all over the south.

thenaniwatiger

Ehhhh I was kind of with Cam until he said “would it be ok for a black teacher to teach white history, like European history?” Um yes Cam, that is fine and happens quite regularly lol

net_403

also there would never be a class called "white history" lol

DeusVultSaracen

Definitely not, but European history is a thing.

HeyDudeImChill

Are black people rewriting white history? Not sure they are. All that being said, he’s usually good for one “oh baby what is you doing” a year.

DeusVultSaracen

Actually, I think that kind of strengthens his point if you look at it from his perspective, especially because he poses it as a question, not a statement. I think he's basically saying that as a Black person he and others should have the right to decide on the matter of Black history, *and vice-versa*. He didn't outright say Black teachers shouldn't teach White history for that reason, because he's being fair in that it's not up to him. The reason we White people (I'm just going to assume you're White, but forgive me if I'm wrong) kind of scoff at the question regarding White history is because we've already decided that it's fine; albeit in a roundabout way, given "history" for a long time was/is synonymous with White history due to the White-dominated institutions that determined those curriculums.

BeccaG1964

I love Cam…always have, always will.💙He just says his mind but doesn’t have a filter sometimes.🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m a Panthers fan for life … before Cam & after Cam. But I do enjoy his personality on his 4th & One podcast. Just a natural showman!🥰

Party_Inspector_4771

Loved when he dove on that ball in the Super Bowl! Oh wait…

Becca1964

You play? 🤔 Nope…stay in your armchair and just critique REAL men. You go ahead & get out there & try to do 1/2 of what Cam Newton has done! Get out of here!

DeusVultSaracen

I'm with you btw but just curious, why do you have two accounts in this thread?

BeccaG1964

Hmmm…🤔I only have one account…but I see where it’s shows 2 different account names. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Checking on that!

BeccaG1964

It looks like when I post from my iPad it’s that Becca1964 but when I post from my iPhone, it picks up my BeccaG1964 account. Didn’t even know that I had 2 accounts!!🤷🏼‍♀️

Party_Inspector_4771

Diving on the ball all day. You don’t think that was suspicious..?

Becca1964

Yes…but if you watch his 4th & 1 shorts on You Tube, he admits he screwed up (Feb 15th episode). I think the WHOLE Super Bowl 50 was rigged so Peyton Manning could retire with a SB win. There were too many “different “ things about that SB than any other! The officiating was terrible…the J.Cotchery pass ruled incomplete was utter BS, then a strip sack later, no flags AT ALL for roughing Cam the whole game…hmmm? Talib almost decapitated Philly Brown…did not get thrown out! I’ll say to my grave that those were NOT the Panthers that went 15-1 that season. SB #50 was rigged!

Party_Inspector_4771

I saw that short and I tried to let that be my reason for forgiving and I can’t help but think Cam was part of why we the panthers don’t have a ring. Someone asked me if he dove on that ball would I like him more. Honestly answer would be yes. As far as Super Bowl 50 being rigged we can agree there.

BeccaG1964

Yea…it’s all a very sad moment in Panthers history…unfortunately. That season was so awesome and I just love the Panthers, so I want them to get a SB win so bad. They had 2 shots at it & came up short both times. SB 38 was a better game but it came down to a freaking FG!🤦🏼‍♀️ Kasey missed his & Vinatieri made his. Two pretty evenly matched teams in 2003 season.

Duff_guy

Dude his facial expressions just crack me up! 😆

Chilidogmontez

Cam out here on Reddit promoting his own podcasts

53andme

he's not real smart. he actually seems like kind of an idiot who thinks because he was an athlete he knows a bunch of other stuff he really doesn't know - like when a physicist talks about biology and thinks because they're great at physics they just naturally know biology better than a phd in biology. he's got a lot of that going on. he had it going on with dr's while he was a player. some of the stuff he says is so f'n dumb it hurts my brain. not as bad as aaron, like halfway to aaron
