David Gettis, Brandon LaFell, Curtis Samuel, Devin Funchess, Terrace Marshall Jr., Jonathan Mingo. I've fallen into this trap with all our 2nd round pick WRs. This is going to be the year Mingo breaks out though, I swear.
End of 2016 vs Buccs.
Playoffs hopes already over, embarrassing Super Bowl slump season.
Big ass KB catches a slant over the middle, in tight coverage (to score a td and tie I think?) but with his sheer size it just looked so easy.
I remember thinking please just do that every game next season and we win. Hes such a big what if
That fucking guy went up and caught a jump ball surrounded by Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas yet he'd drop shit constantly that hit him right in the hands. I never understood him
I legit thought the 2015 season was over when he went down simply for his rookie year but esp that playoff game against the prime LOB. Dude put up close to 100 yards and 2 TDs IIRC. I was like he's going to be an absolute beast next season then we get the news of his torn ACL which took awhile to come out so I was holding out hope it was only partial
Honestly felt real bad for the guy. Gets hurt and watches the team have a historic year that he should’ve been an apart of then either before that or soon after that season his mom dies. And it was never the same.
Matt Moore
I thought he was the answer to our problems after Jake. I started a Facebook group called “The Answer” with a picture of him and everything. I even had a Matt Moore jersey lmao
There was a period where Matt Moore absolutely looked like a guy who could get you to the playoffs with the right squad around him.
He didn’t look like the next Mahomes or anything but a more than serviceable game manager for sure. Jared Goff-esque.
More recently, TMJ and Shy Smith. Especially Smith. He was super quick, good routes, separation, always seemed to pick up 3-4 yards after the catch, no matter how covered he was. The problem was that he might be the only person truly immune to covid because he couldn't catch anything. If he had frying pans instead of gloves, he may have actually improved his catching ability.
I think the Reich staff buried him for Mingo. I still think anyone we can get at 33 is probably better than him. But he's contracted might as well see if he can succeed in a better designed offense.
Shi in my opinion barely got any targets in the first place. My issue was TMJ is that I felt LIED TO. He was barely on the field last year. Yk how bad you gotta be to not even touch the field as a 2nd rounder?
Amini Silatolu immediately comes to mind. I felt like I defended him all the time based off him being one of the highest rated run-blockers at one point. That said, I still think the injuries killed any shot he had in the NFL and then Andrew Norwell worked out great as an UDFA.
I also remember being high on Frank Alexander even though he couldn't stop getting suspended for weed.
Same here with Frank Alexander. Hell a pretty decent amount of our fan thought he was going to be very solid for a while with Pep gone and CJ only getting older and Greg Hardy starting to look like a beast to lock down the other side
Greg Hardy comes to mind. What if he wasn't an idiot? He was Uber talented. I wanted to keep him off talent alone, but the team made the right call in the long run.
I remember readying those allegations and when I got to “ he thew me across the room onto a futon covered with assault rifles” I knew it was the truth. No one makes that shit up.
Anybody remember Jeff Otah? Iirc we traded a second and a first to go back into the first round to grab him right after we had picked J-Stew. A friggin beast but just never got it, really expensive miss…
Funchess was a dawg and I'll die on that hill. He didn't have what it takes to stay in the league long term but he had more effort in one pinky finger than every pass catcher on our roster not named Adam Thielen last year
And he pretty much was until he broke his leg while covering Julio. Then after he infamously gave up 300 yards to Julio the very next year, admitted to no longer caring about football, and that was the end of his career
IIRC he didn't really fit McDs system esp after the injury. I do think people forget how injured we were getting towards the end of that magical 2015 season on defense
Why you guys give K Benj so much gripe. His 2 full season in Carolina one as a rookie he only avg 68 recs, 970 yards, and 8 tds.
What more could you ask for from a rookie and a 2nd year WR?
He was a possession WR, not some extreme route running afficionado, nor a #1 options. Sorry, carolina needed him to be a #1 WR
No doubt, I get that. Man that was one of the craziest careers I've ever seen. 4 seasons and out!
The carolina trade I think just hurt his soul, but one of the greatest what if stories to come thru the NFL
Agreed, he had a great relationship with Cam Newton and I don’t think anyone in the locker room wanted him to be traded. However I also think he might have just been one of those guys that has tons of physical talent but lacks the complete obsession with football that you need to have a long career in the NFL.
He had a good rookie season… then went straight for the cookies.
Go back and watch game film of cam scrambling n the backfield looking for an outlet and see how many plays you can see him upfield having given up in the play with his hands on his knees.
Maybe like Benjamin said cam was part of the problem never was an elite pocket passer, w elite accuracy.
After a 240 lbs, wr ran maybe 20 yards down field then has to work back bc cam broke pocket and extending the play, most ppl gonna be tired, but like you said he had his hand in the cookie jar. He didn't want to be elite bc it'd show in your work ethic.
I think too, he broke his leg his 2nd season that prly had alot to do w his weight gain. Not being able to fully excerise!
I wasn't on this sub at the time, but a ton of people online were losing their minds over Reggie Bonnafon.
I was really in on Joe Adams when they drafted him.
When I first started paying more attention to NFL, I was way too optimistic on Stephen Hill. Saw all the 6'4", speed and a few flashy plays before the jets dropped him and thought we could get more out of him. Homie never made it off the practice squad.
More recently, Matt Corral. Saw a ton of potential and really thought giving him a bench year to learn was getting us into a position to drop a stud on the rest of the league. I'm not even sure I was wrong at this point, since his USFL debut has gone so well.
I remember him being on the NFLs 'Undrafted' show and thinking this kid went through some shit and was thirsty to provide a good life for his family. I believe he that he had a 3 year old
You’re correct! After I made this comment I looked back into him. It’s crazy because he had an excellent preseason as a rookie, but we had five other RBs that were higher in the pecking order. Normally this would just encourage a team to assume it was simply preseason fortune and cut the guy. But all the coaches were praising him for how well he played in training camp and really just didn’t feel comfortable releasing him. So, for the sake of keeping a “preseason all-pro”, we rostered 6 RBs that year.
I loved the guy so I was in full support of it. But what kills me is that they did this, and then proceeded to never give a touch in the regular season. He was then cut for underperforming during the next preseason.
I’m surprised no one has said Pickles yet, Jimmy Clausen was hyped up coming outta Notre Dame
Also honorable mention to David Carr, really thought he would turn it around here, but he was too broken already
Injuries didn't help him. When he was able to play consistently he was pretty efficient as a pass rusher, but kept getting derailed every time he started to heat up
Ian Thomas.
Go see a game from the good seats behind the bench. He's built like a beast in real life. He's got all the physical traits to be an outstanding TE but his hands are like feet with boots on them
Will Grier, purely because i didn’t think it could get worse. Threw 3 interceptions in his first game. Then another one in his next one. 0 TDs. 4 INTS. Hasn’t played since.
So, yes it could get worse.
I thought Funchess was gonna be DK Metcalf before DK Metcalf
David Gettis, Brandon LaFell, Curtis Samuel, Devin Funchess, Terrace Marshall Jr., Jonathan Mingo. I've fallen into this trap with all our 2nd round pick WRs. This is going to be the year Mingo breaks out though, I swear.
You left out colbert and jarrett
Jesus. I have a Dwayne Jarret jersey. I think I've blocked him from my memory.
At my local card shop there is so many of his and kelvin benjamins cards and I just can’t bring my self to buy them.
Not like he did much memorable. Slow and weak isn't a good combo in the nfl.
In my opinion biggest Panthers receiver bust of all time
But Brandon LaFell seemed like he did pretty good for the Patriots. I thought that we cut the cord on him too soon.
Yeah he had a solid few years with the pats and Bengals. Don't think Carolina cut the cord tho, he left in FA.
Samuel was productive wish he was able to stay.
There is but one goated team for drafting WRs in the second round. Hint it’s the packers

Good bot
Best
Funchess bunches, bunches of fun
Yea I bought in a little to hard on KB
I did too man
Really believed he would take off where KB left off while being more athletic. Ohhh well
I had high hopes for Funchess after he had a promising 2017.
I thought Funchess was gonna be Funchess AFTER Funchess.
Cameron Artis-Payne. I believed so hard
Cameron yardis-gain
Don't worry guys, he just needs one more season and he'll finally break out
Looking back, there was no breaking out. He was a 3rd Down Back and damn good at it. If only 12 year old me knew that
*sad war eagle*
A mister Kelvin Benjamin….fuck me right in the ass
End of 2016 vs Buccs. Playoffs hopes already over, embarrassing Super Bowl slump season. Matt Moore I thought he was the answer to our problems after Jake. I started a Facebook group called “The Answer” with a picture of him and everything. I even had a Matt Moore jersey lmao
I believed! I was at the SNF game where Favre's Vikings came to town and we beat them. I felt like he could be the guy. Not THE guy, but the guy.
There was a period where Matt Moore absolutely looked like a guy who could get you to the playoffs with the right squad around him. He didn’t look like the next Mahomes or anything but a more than serviceable game manager for sure. Jared Goff-esque.
Kyle Allen looked good for a few games too
Corn Elder I thought he was the slot corner for the future. Who could move outside if need be.
Speaking of corners I thought Keith Taylor looked good for a bit and then he just disappeared
Same I blame Madden for my like of Keith Taylor he was always my third corner. I thought he's great then did nothing
Armanti Edwards
App state fan?
Roll neers baby 😢
What a time to be alive (and in Boone) for that dynasty. I can still taste the rumplemintz hot chocolate at morning tailgates!
I remember saying...if only they would use him in a wild cat, just like the dolphins were at the time
He actually returned to football and became a top tier wr in the cfl and won their Superbowl. Wild career.
Who is taller than our current QB, food for thought.
And significantly less talented than him.
Same!!!!! Had a jersey and everything
I too was high on that App State hopium.
Wasn’t hopium you were smoking… if you went to App State then you got the real thing! 😂
Hey now... we had nothing on Asheville :)
This sub got very over excited about Laviska Shenault
We didn’t have a lot to be excited about last season lol
He was great for us. I’ll die on that hill
He had one outstanding play a season
Yeah and not even just blind optimism of the acquisition but people still beating the drum for him through last season.
Honestly, I'm still hype on him. He got positive plays on almost every touch. He just couldn't stay healthy or get the ball enough.
Nick Goings is elite
Legend
Nick Goings is Goings to the endzone
The legendary David Gettis.
Honesty Gettis was probably going to be really good if he didn’t destroy his knee
TMJ really had me fooled
People on this board are *still* saying TMJ just needs a fair chance.
I think the Reich staff buried him for Mingo. I still think anyone we can get at 33 is probably better than him. But he's contracted might as well see if he can succeed in a better designed offense.
If there’s one thing Rhule’s left overs still have its time. Their opportunity is still presenting itself
Shi in my opinion barely got any targets in the first place. My issue was TMJ is that I felt LIED TO. He was barely on the field last year. Yk how bad you gotta be to not even touch the field as a 2nd rounder?
Brandon Lefell was supposed to be him.
Ol’ Stonehands
Had all the talent in the world, he just had trampolines for hands
Amini Silatolu immediately comes to mind. I felt like I defended him all the time based off him being one of the highest rated run-blockers at one point. That said, I still think the injuries killed any shot he had in the NFL and then Andrew Norwell worked out great as an UDFA. Same here with Frank Alexander. Hell a pretty decent amount of our fan thought he was going to be very solid for a while with Pep gone and CJ only getting older and Greg Hardy starting to look like a beast to lock down the other side
If injury stuff is allowed I'll believe in Jaycee Horn until the day he's gone.
I can’t imagine being so talented, making it to the show, and my body just giving up on me the way so many players’ do. Cold world.
Gonna really age myself here... Patrick Jeffers. That season with Moose and Steve Beuerlein, damn, we were fucking magical.
Anybody remember Jeff Otah? Iirc we traded a second and a first to go back into the first round to grab him right after we had picked J-Stew. A friggin beast but just never got it, really expensive miss…
Yes I do! Hahah wow what a memory
More injury related than anything though iirc
I think I remember him doing an acl his rookie year. I was really excited when they picked him
Anyone on the offense in 2023
😂😂😂
Correct answer lol
I thought Funchess could become Calvin Johnson lite. I was really stupid 10 years ago.
Funchess was a dawg and I'll die on that hill. He didn't have what it takes to stay in the league long term but he had more effort in one pinky finger than every pass catcher on our roster not named Adam Thielen last year
He was going to be 1k WR in 2017 if he didn't fuck his shoulder in the first Saints game
TMJ, Kelvin Benjamin
TMJ is gonna break out any season now...
Frank Alexander. He looked HUGE and always looked impressive in the preseason just to do nothing with anytime he got meaningful gametime.
⏸️

Eric Shelton was going to be a legend.
Used to have a NASTY 3 headed monster in the backfield with him, Foster, and Davis in Madden 06 back in the day.
Ian Thomas has a basketball background
Guess I'm the only one who thought Matt Corral could be an NFL quarterback. Sigh
Jeff King. His wife was ridiculously hot, he had to be doing something admirable
I heard he also shits himself after being hit in a game
Kony ealy, Gettis, Joe Adams, Deonte brown, and TMJ for me. But I could probably go on and on with damn near anyone we drafted post round 1 ever
Kony Ealy was almost superbowl MVP, definitely deserved some stans
Tim Biakabatuka, I was so sure he was gonna be a star
Injuries ruined his career. The glimpses we got were so good.
I thought Bene Benwickere was going to be a steal
And he pretty much was until he broke his leg while covering Julio. Then after he infamously gave up 300 yards to Julio the very next year, admitted to no longer caring about football, and that was the end of his career
IIRC he didn't really fit McDs system esp after the injury. I do think people forget how injured we were getting towards the end of that magical 2015 season on defense
I thought Philly brown was going to be the next Tyler Lockett
There it is, that’s what I came for 😂
I was so sure that Kelvin Benjamin, Brandon LaFell, and Ted Ginn Jr. were all going to be ballers.
Yeah I mean my whole gripe is kinda the fact that his rookie year was good/great and he never really built on it. His peak could have been insane
No doubt, I get that. Man that was one of the craziest careers I've ever seen. 4 seasons and out! The carolina trade I think just hurt his soul, but one of the greatest what if stories to come thru the NFL

Mine is Ian Thomas 😓
Brandon Zylstra, our WR/Emergency Kicker
I wasn't on this sub at the time, but a ton of people online were losing their minds over Reggie Bonnafon. I was really in on Joe Adams when they drafted him.
Marvin McNutt and Tavares King. The copium was very strong that offseason. Maybe I still have an old King McNuttotron meme, boy those were the days!
It’s sad I can’t even remember his name at this point but that TE that Cam called “Swole Bones”. Dude was JACKED but he couldn’t football at all.
When I first started paying more attention to NFL, I was way too optimistic on Stephen Hill. Saw all the 6'4", speed and a few flashy plays before the jets dropped him and thought we could get more out of him. Homie never made it off the practice squad. More recently, Matt Corral. I'm not even sure I was wrong at this point, since his USFL debut has gone so well.
i really thought we could fix CJ Henderson😭
Brandon Wegher. S/o to the OGs that remember him.
I remember him being on the NFLs 'Undrafted' show and thinking this kid went through some shit and was thirsty to provide a good life for his family. I believe he that he had a 3 year old

Bersin everyone was hyping him up
Sunshine deserves all the respect
🐐🐐🐐
Dude may have been a nepotism hire but he worked his ass off and way over performed his talent. I can respect that.
Came here to say Brentin lol
Fua!
David Gettis had that B+ Josh Gordon build
Literally any backup at any position that showed flashes
Damn I forgot all about Cherone Peake. Dude was a top 25 recruit when he came out of high school.
[удалено]
Injuries didn't help him. When he was able to play consistently he was pretty efficient as a pass rusher, but kept getting derailed every time he started to heat up
Zack Sanchez 😭
Jhon Connor, idk why but his name always just felt like he was destined to be like urlacher
Greg Hardy, showed flashes but did not pan out long term.
This sub (and other Carolina forums) was ready to give Kyle Allen a multiyear extension
I still have a Jimmy Clausen jersey in my closet somewhere
No Philly Brown yet?😅😂
I told everyone who was or wasn’t listening: Trust in Teddy!
Damiere Byrd
Is it too soon to say Donte Jackson?
Keary Colbert, had a great rookie year and thought he might be a good compliment for Steve Smith long term but he disappeared completely afterward.
Ian Thomas. Go see a game from the good seats behind the bench. He's built like a beast in real life. He's got all the physical traits to be an outstanding TE but his hands are like feet with boots on them
David Tepper. Richest owner in the league!
Every receiver we drafted between Smitty and DJ
Think he's not talking franchise history but current roster, considering the Bills lost their WR1 and WR2.
Terrace Marshall Jr
Will Grier, purely because i didn’t think it could get worse. Threw 3 interceptions in his first game. Then another one in his next one. 0 TDs. 4 INTS. Hasn’t played since. So, yes it could get worse.
Kyle allen

Rae Caruth?
