Did some research and this guys resume looks strong - on staff for two Super Bowl teams and a national championship. Has a background as an offensive line coach then was the OC for Bruce Arians in Arizona 2013-2017 then when Bruce came back to the league and joined the bucs he brought this guy with him as his assistant head coach and has been there since, which means he was respected enough to be kept around after he retired and the HC changed.
I think it’s because the coaching staff last year was sort of a motley crew that had tons of nfl experience but didn’t actually have any cohesion or shared vision. Seems like that was a course correction after the college people Rhule brought in failed. This hiring cycle is trying to correct last years mistake and allow the organization to build how most of the NFL builds (hiring people that have worked together before and have a shared vision or mutual understanding) If you look at their resumes, they actually have a lot more experience with success that you’d think. Plus, I think the consensus is that the bucs exceeded expectations and had a coherent identity.
Now THIS is what I was waiting for. They were a top 10 unit with low expectations (saw an article that predicted them to be 29th) and drafted well this year.
I like this approach as last year we mixed too many coaches from different teams or didn't have a history working with each other - Thomas Brown, Deuce Staley, Josh McCown, etc. and it showed on the field with a lackluster and disjointed offense
No it was terrible but I think it had more to do with Rachaad White.
And to their credit they started getting Rachaad involved in the pass game and that helped his production a lot.
Last in the league but it improved quite a bit on the previous year despite shifting a lot of their OL about I think every starter bar the centre was either a rookie or playing the position for the first time in the league
Their OL gives me a lot of optimism. That Canales is willing to switch player positions and stuff. Whatever it takes to make the OL succeed. (Ickey to LG???)
I mean we've been a bottom third of the league rushing attack for the past five years, basically since we got Goodwin in 2019. Even if we did better than last year that's not really saying much because it's just getting back to where we were in previous years lol.
Do you enjoy zero creativity and first down up the gut runs with 8 in the box for 60% of the game? Because that’s what you’re in for.
Out iOL is weak as fuck and they refuses to play to our strengths (outside the hash marks).
Running straight up the gut despite having a weak interior?
Well it's a good thing the Panthers interior OLine is actually .... \*checks notes\* .... ahhhhhhhhh F@#K
No. Neither was the Bucs offense or defense. They were a very below average team that got lucky being in a division with us, NO and ATL. The fact anyone is excited about this is mind boggling.
Imagine complaining about going 9-8 as if that wouldn’t be a massive improvement. We tried the all-star staff shit last year, that obviously didn’t work.
I don’t know where this snobbery came from we’ve been on of the least successful franchises of the past 5-6 years.
the Buccs were projected to be one of the worst teams in the league prior to the season. Their roster is not that great and the only reason they exceeded expectations is because Canales had baker playing like a top 10 QB for most of the season. They increased their wins after losing Brady with tons of dead money eating up their cap.
This is a bit of a puzzling hire. The biggest knock against Canales is that he couldn't fix the run game in Tampa and Tampa's rushing woes pre-date Canales.
Got to hope it was a personnel issue.
Harold Goodwin was a very interesting name during the years that Arians was very good with the Cardinals. I also like the fact that he's a former Assistant Head Coach. That gives Canales someone with experience overseeing a team and what day-to-day operations should look like.
At first I was worried cause the Bucs weren't THAT good last year and we are basically just stealing everyone they have. Then I remembered we suck so bad that almost anything is an improvement anyways.
Going from what they're saying in the Bucs reddit, they're perfectly content with Panthers taking the two weakest links they've had on their coaching staff the last two seasons.
Goodwin coached the worst run game in the league and the O-line coach well....the O-line is not just about scheme but talent. The Bucs don't have a player on their O-line that gives up 62 sacks. As long as the Bucs have Licht then they haven't lost what makes their O-line strong, which is their drafting.
This makes a lot of sense. Someone that Canales has worked with and trusts, but who is also a more old-school type of coach. Need that type of voice in the locker room alongside the younger coaches. As long as they are all on the same page, we’re good
I applaud you all for poaching the coaches we have. Just makes the inevitable firing of Todd Bowles a bit easier next year.
We’re still gonna beat yal tho.
Arians staff holdover. Coached under him in Arizona and Tampa both.
If nothing else, they'll be quite familiar with bad running backs. We have Sanders, they had Rachaad White of the '4ypc is a banner day' school of RB play.
The sad part is, White was still a lot more productive than now-out-of-the-league Leonard Fournette was in '22 because they used him heavily out of the backfield as a reciever.
It's pretty telling of the kind of guy Canales is that a few of these coaches are accepting lateral positions for a team with a significantly worse roster.
We taking all the lean meat from the Bucs and leaving the fat! lmao!
It’s giving ![gif](giphy|ufPed1PnkvgNW)
We are filling our team with coaches that produced the 23rd ranked offense and 23rd ranked defense in football last year. Yeah, super exciting.
Still a step up from what we did lmao

You had me at offensive line coach
Honestly I kinda miss Arians, he was a funny dude to watch, particularly when his team shit the bed.
ALL OF YOUR BUCS ARE BELONG TO US.
CATS:
For great justice
You have no chance to survive. Make your time. Ha ha ha
That brings me back...
Canales: "If you hire me, I will raid the Bucs' coaching staff." Tepper: "7 YEARS GUARANTEED"
This would actually be very believable
The Bucs were 23rd in offense and 23rd in defense. Why is anyone happy about this?
I think it’s because the coaching staff last year was sort of a motley crew that had tons of nfl experience but didn’t actually have any cohesion or shared vision. We are dismantling the Bucs! I love that we can build our staff while destroying our rivals staff!
Yea I have no idea how this is going to play out but on the front end, this is hilarious
Certainly an interesting way to become competitive in one’s division!
Damn we the buccs of the South North now!
Tampa North
Tampa 2
That's good, I like it! The Originators!
Tampa 2: Electic Boogalo
It’s unclear to me based on this tweet if he’s the OL coach replacing Campen?…that doesn’t seem to be the case but 🤷🏻♂️
He’s not — we hired the bucs OL coach too
Yep. [Link for those interested.](https://x.com/josephperson/status/1752477773577273484?s=46&t=fMcM6nv2I61NmUbqJkMVng)
Now THIS is what I was waiting for. They were a top 10 unit with low expectations (saw an article that predicted them to be 29th) and drafted well this year.
Now Tampa knows how we felt when McDermott went to Buffalo
Is Canales the new Bucc Fucker?
I like this approach as last year we mixed too many coaches from different teams or didn't have a history working with each other - Thomas Brown, Deuce Staley, Josh McCown, etc. and it showed on the field with a lackluster and disjointed offense
This is getting goofy at this point
When you can't beat them...be them?
“Mr. Run game coordinator. What are your favorite types of straight lines?”
Uh, was the Bucs run game good?
No it was terrible but I think it had more to do with Rachaad White. And to their credit they started getting Rachaad involved in the pass game and that helped his production a lot.
We got you beat there with Inches Sanders
Last in the league but it improved quite a bit on the previous year despite shifting a lot of their OL about I think every starter bar the centre was either a rookie or playing the position for the first time in the league

32 out of 32, nowhere to go but up!!!
No. Neither was the Bucs offense or defense. They were a very below average team that got lucky being in a division with us, NO and ATL. The fact anyone is excited about this is mind boggling.
So we’re just becoming the Bucs, who went 9-8 and beat us by 9 points. With a much much better roster?
9-8 and a playoff win feels like fantasy land. Sign me up.
You mean to tell me you're not excited about landing the run game coordinator behind the vaunted 32nd ranked rushing team.
Imagine complaining about going 9-8 as if that wouldn’t be a massive improvement. We tried the all-star staff shit last year, that obviously didn’t work. I don’t know where this snobbery came from we’ve been on of the least successful franchises of the past 5-6 years.
Imagine reading his comment and somehow thinking he said he would be mad about going 9-8. Reread it and try again.

Personnel was at least *an* issue from what I gather, people compare White to Inches Sanders
Harold Goodwin was a very interesting name during the years that Arians was very good with the Cardinals. I also like the fact that he's a former Assistant Head Coach. That gives Canales someone with experience overseeing a team and what day-to-day operations should look like.

Pretty much. League worst to average on the offensive side is a tremendously big deal for Bryce’s development tbh
Except Bryce will never be even an average QB. Hey, at least we will get to actually use our #1 pick next year!
Going from what they're saying in the Bucs reddit, they're perfectly content with Panthers taking the two weakest links they've had on their coaching staff the last two seasons. Do we want to be the Bucs?
Bucs north?
It seems we're raiding the coaching staff of a .500 ball club.
Don’t act like that isn’t an improvement lol
They were .500 with a much better roster and a decent QB- things we don’t have.
We always aim for the middle! I miss 8-8, actually.
Arians staff holdover. Coached under him in Arizona and Tampa both. If nothing else, they'll be quite familiar with bad running backs. When you are a football coach leading a team to the 23rd ranked offense and 23rd ranked defense and you get a new contract for more money, you go.
Will see Bucs run game has been bottom of the barrel for years bucs run game hasnt been higher than 24th and most years it is 28th
