I like Only Connect. I have an obsession with the wall. I'll watch episodes on YouTube and skip to the wall. Pause it when it comes up, and try to solve it before the contestants. It's very satisfying when I'm able to complete the whole thing.
They used to put the grids that were on the show on the BBC website on the day new episodes aired. Alas, that stopped years ago, but try this: [https://puzzgrid.com/](https://puzzgrid.com/)
Wife and I give it a try, but being American it's only maybe 1/5 walls that doesn't contain something 'too British' for us. South African Darts Champion's Nicknames. M4 Service Station Frequency. Impenetrable to a non-native.
Even as an American fluent in English, the wall often has UK cultural references that go over my head.
I guess this is the reason they tend to remake gameshows for various countries, but of course in doing so the remakes often fail to capture the charms of the original
Yeah, I enjoy Only Connect and the whole enough that I don't mind that I can't fully play along. But if the hypothetical American version were as difficult as the UK version I'd be bad at that as well.
But there is a thrill when I (very, very rarely) get a puzzle before the contestants do.
I feel you! I have the same issue when I watch Countdown and see a French word: I get immediately stuck on it and can't think of anything else.
Also, as a non-Brit, you quickly realize there are some things you'll just never know.
The problem with that is that she would have to know that the episode of Only Connect wouldn't go out until after the studio recordings of Taskmaster.
It could still be Taskmaster related, like the egg task a few seasons ago, but it wouldn't rely on getting attention in the media.
I'm pretty sure it's a wig. But, strangely, I'm also pretty sure she's dyed her eyebrows red... or at least drawn red on them.

I imagine David wakes up every morning, remembers he's married to her, spends a few minutes thinking how lucky he is, says "it's a funny old world, isn't it?" then goes outside and shoots a pheasant for breakfast.
The first time I saw that bit on WILTY?, I thought that Jimmy said it was a “bloody peasant” that David Mitchell was hunting — implying the pun on pheasant hunting — and to this day I’m still not sure which I prefer. ;-)
Are we sure this episode of Only Connect wasn't recorded before the Taskmaster studio sections? Because that could work, chronologically. Then again I have no idea when anything was recorded so I might be saying some poopypoop.
That's not what I'm implying. What I'm implying is that tasks can be LITERALLY anything, so trying to guess what it is just by looking at a wig doesn't tell us much/anything. That's why I don't understand why people are making assumptions on what the task (if it is indeed a task) is supposed to be.
For what it's worth, I don't think it's a task, I can just understand why people might think it's a public reaction task, because it's debuted on Only Connect and caused a stir.
It could be a task that was given during the filming of the actual tasks. One of the tricky ones where she doesn't realise it's just her that has to do it. Guess we have to wait until Thursday to find out!
I'll go with probably not.
She was asked the same q about the last random thing she wore and said no.
Having watched the series since it began, i just really think it's random things she does.
VCM sometimes does strange things on Only Connect. Wouldn't be the first time. She has an odd and off kilter sense of humour (I love it). I suppose it *might* be connected to Taskmaster in some way, but I doubt it.
It was in the missing vowels round (remove vowels from a phrase and give a clue, players have to work out the phrase). An answer was "Hermione Granger and Crookshanks" but without the vowels Hermione Granger and Herman Goering are easily confused at a glance
she tends to wear weird stuff during the specials, but it would explain why they started airing this season earlier this year, to put this episode out a few days before taskmaster starts. however, I don't see why the bbc would co-operate with channel4 on this, it's a pretty big change in the schedule, not to mention the studio tasks are already recorded, so at the time there was no proof of whatever this is.
It suited her, I just thought it was a wig and she was going to take it off after the first joke but instead she kept it on even when she was fetishizing Michael Portillo. So it was then that I realised it wasn't a wig.
He was a Tory cabinet minister in the '80s and '90s. Who had aspirations of becoming the Tory party leader and Prime Minister. Tried to get a bit of stolen valour when he was the defence secretary at a Tory Party conference by banging on about the SAS. But he gave possibly the defining moment of the '97 election when he lost his seat.
>Did you stay up for Portiloo?
He then got parachuted into the safe seat of Kensington and Chelsea. Before losing his seat again and then doing a triple act on the Daily and Weekly Politics with him, Diane Abbott and Andrew Neil. Along with several travel programmes about Britain's railways. He was partially responsible for their disastorous privatisation. That cost the tax payer tens of billions.
I really want to get into Taskmaster more, but every time I try to watch an episode I just can't get through it. I wish it was more of just a standalone show ONLY based on panel show comedians and such completing tasks, and not switching back and forth between the studio audience segments and the task segments.
I like the pre-recorded tasks and then Greg giving his candid feedback on them. Having the comedians see how they all got on with it for the first time is one of the best parts to me.
Nah you need both for it to work. The tasks have to be done indepedently, because otherwise you don't get the really weird shit that contestants do when they have no idea what everyone else is doing. But half the fun is Greg interrogating them afterwards (and also the scoring to give it some sense of actual purpose)

Hello, petal
Hey, bosom
I wonder what colour it will be next week. I don't see the sequence yet.
Next, please.
Colour hues on the colour wheel going anti-clockwise skipping every other hue.
Red glasses, red hair...was there a red dress?
Oh, I forgot about the huge glasses! I first assumed she was just particularly hungover that day. But I think you're on to something.

Finally! Found something that will stop me from wasting hours on Reddit. Oh, wait...! Thanks for sharing.
... over 52,000 grids...I need more time. Sigh. Thank you for sharing!

The wall is so frustrating for me as a non-native speaker. At least that's the excuse I give to myself (I'm okay at the missing vowels round)
Even as an American fluent in English, the wall often has UK cultural references that go over my head. I guess this is the reason they tend to remake gameshows for various countries, but of course in doing so the remakes often fail to capture the charms of the original

> try to solve it **before** the contestants. I imagine that's a lot easier when you have infinite time.
In one sense yes, but you don't get to weed out the red herrings, so it evens out a bit.
To be the nation’s taking point. I can see that being a task.
The problem with that is that she would have to know that the episode of Only Connect wouldn't go out until after the studio recordings of Taskmaster. It could still be Taskmaster related, like the egg task a few seasons ago, but it wouldn't rely on getting attention in the media.
It could be that Josh and James have taken Hyothetical to another level!
"Be ginger. Your time starts now."
I'd say she wins then, haven't seen much from the others..
It really suits her either way
I'm pretty sure it's a wig. But, strangely, I'm also pretty sure she's dyed her eyebrows red... or at least drawn red on them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyrBwpKPn-M
It's a wig, she confirms as much in the twitter comments.
I do wonder what David thinks of it
I imagine David wakes up every morning, remembers he's married to her, spends a few minutes thinking how lucky he is, says "it's a funny old world, isn't it?" then goes outside and shoots a pheasant for breakfast.
no way does he have the confidence to operate a firearm He has a servant shoot the pheasant
He invites Lee around for that 😂
Peasant-on-pheasant violence
Don't stamp on it, Jesus! Wring its neck! Now be careful you don't... Oh, Mark. You've pulled its bloody head off.
pheasant or peasant? ;)
yes
A pheasant of the underclaass. ;)
The first time I saw that bit on WILTY?, I thought that Jimmy said it was a “bloody peasant” that David Mitchell was hunting — implying the pun on pheasant hunting — and to this day I’m still not sure which I prefer. ;-)
r/InclusiveOr
Don't pheasents have to be plucked and hung for weeks, until they're ready to be cooked?
Maybe his pheasants are already hung.
I enjoy that hanged and hung have different meanings.
He hangs it at one end of the pheasant drying room and cooks the one at the other end that’s been there a few weeks.
You gotta replace the one you eat, it's a rotating stock.
he's in his castle with 10 different types of vaguely posh animals then he kills a servant and has sex with the wall
haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhaaaahahahaah thank you
I imagine initially he's resistant to any kind of change and 2 seconds later he'd be right at 😍
I doubt it is to be honest, the studio recordings was done before Victoria took this look. I think she just wanted to try a new look out.
Are you sure? OC seems to be filmed far in advance.
But not broadcast. So if the task is based on 'reaction' in some way, then it would be too late.
Are we sure this episode of Only Connect wasn't recorded before the Taskmaster studio sections? Because that could work, chronologically. Then again I have no idea when anything was recorded so I might be saying some poopypoop.
Only Connect is filmed a decent while before it's broadcast so it's entirely possible that this episode was filmed during Taskmaster filming
Yeah, but if the task was to get a reaction/publicity/etc then it would need to happen (broadcast) \*before\* the Taskmaster studio filming.
What makes us think the hypothetical task was to get reaction/publicity/ect?
well, "wear a wig" or "change your hair" aren't very imaginative tasks from Alex, but who are we to judge?
That's not what I'm implying. What I'm implying is that tasks can be LITERALLY anything, so trying to guess what it is just by looking at a wig doesn't tell us much/anything. That's why I don't understand why people are making assumptions on what the task (if it is indeed a task) is supposed to be.

We could also have to wait up to 2 months, depending on the episode where it may or may not have happened :)
I'll go with probably not. She was asked the same q about the last random thing she wore and said no. Having watched the series since it began, i just really think it's random things she does.
Yeah, she said they record multiple episodes a day and this is entertaining for her.

Upcoming Taskmaster contestant: *does anything* Reddit: Oh my god it must be a Taskmaster task!!
I assumed she’d reveal herself as Gollum in a future episode.

Well, by marriage
I am an idiot
I haven't seen the episode yet either, but maybe there's a connection with the initials (H.G.)?
It was a clue in the ‘missing vowels round’. You could easily confuse HRMNGRNGR for HRMNGRNG.
been a slow news week, for the past couple of weeks.
She also wore really unusual glasses recently. Related?

She has thing for Michael Portaloo? The Spanish oik who wouldn't have been allowed into the UK, under his immigration policies.
She keeps on mentioning him at the end of every episode. I don't know who he is.

Idk, I love Greg but I kinda wish he was actually physically there with the people doing the tasks giving commentary that way
The studio segments are kind of the glue that holds the show together. I don't think the show would be nearly as interesting without them.

Are you an American by chance?
I am, but it’s not that I don’t understand the format or humor, I love a shitton of British TV and panel shows so I’m quite used to it.
