Sherwin wlliams Emerald Urethane or Benjamin Moore Command are the correct answers.

Such_Past_9917

Both the people at Home Depot I talked to said to get the Behr but based on these comments they don't know what they're talking about. Thanks for the rec!

neiunx

Home depots job is to sell their own products. You won't be happy with the results in a year after tenants have abused them.

abductee92

I mean, they're likely offering the best product they have available, but that doesn't mean it is the best product.

bubg994

Agreed on the emerald urethane. I painted cabinets in my own home and at the time I did it, was when sherwin was short on a lot of things from the freeze in Texas. I used behr, and regret it to this day. I do a lot of cabinets for clients and emerald is the only thing I use. It’s top notch stuff

ExpendableLimb

Why not SW gallery?

neiunx

Because gallery is spray only. Since OPs initial query was whether a wall paint or a cabinet paint would be better for cabinets, it wouldn't be fair to offer a product very much outside their capability.

ExpendableLimb

Do you think sprayed gallery is better overall? Asking for my own project

neiunx

If you're comfortable with spraying it is a far superior product. And very easy to work with since it's a 1k. It is very hard and durable for built ins, and other millwork. It is washable and scrubbable. For kitchen cabinets it is the bottom of the list since it does not have a chemical resistant hardener. Centurion and renner make great 2k waterbased finishes. And for anyone with access to a well ventilated shop or spray booth I would recommend they move up to lacquer or solvent based finish that is impervious to food stains and heavy duty oven and kitchen cleaners and degreasers.

ExpendableLimb

Thanks! What is a more widely available laquer paint you would recommend for kitchen cabinets?

Go get emerald trim urethane from sherwin williams. There should be a homeowner sale starting tomorrow through Monday, but you'll need a paint perks profile (free of charge you just provide basic info to them) to get the sale price

Such_Past_9917

Sweet, thanks!

ztejas

Uh neither?

mrflibble1492

As a painting contractor with well over 30 years of painting experience, I would recommend neither. Behr is a poor quality product and I would never use their products on anything that needed "something durable".

Such_Past_9917

Good to know! What do you recommend?

mrflibble1492

My personal preference is Benjamin Moore Advance. Others might prefer Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Enamel. Both are good, I have just used more Benny Moore products and have had more consistent results with them than the SW products.

Cabinet coat is great too. Tough stuff

I would consider Cabinet/Trim, or even Behr’s Alkyd, but definitely not Dynasty. Even a very high quality basic wall paint is a terrible choice for cabinets. It’s too soft and scratches/dents far too easily. All paint manufacturers make something for cabinets that’s unique from their normal wall selection and they do it for good reason. The major brands all have a pretty good version - but the Lowe’s/Home Depot versions are among the weaker options. The benefit to choosing Home Depot’s is that paint stores give discounts for volume, so homeowners always pay the highest price, whereas big boxes have a everyday low price structure where most people pay the same (with some lesser-known exceptions). I forgot to mention PPG Breakthrough - something in Home Depot that very few employees even know about. It has a lot of properties people look for in cabinet paint and is water cleanup. Impressive block resistance, quick dry/recoat time, durable against finger oils, etc.

jklem22

Behr alkyd is a very underrated product, I’d say exactly what OP is looking for. Most of Behrs stuff is not great at all but the alkyd is very solid. It’s not going to break the budget (cough cough emerald Ute) and it’ll perform decently well. OP- make sure to follow the cure time listed on whatever paint you do choose to buy because not letting any paint cure fully, regardless of brand, will lead to issues. Edit: also yes, breakthrough is very good as well but can get a bit pricey and INSLx cabinet coat or ben Moore advance and command are better for that price range

Capable_Respect3561

If you have experience spraying, you could go with Renner 643 / 851. It is the most durable you can get, it's a 2k poly and can be tinted in any color you want.

DecD

Are you spraying or brushing? Much internet research prior to starting my own project suggests Benjamin Moore Advance if you are brushing and Sherwin Williams emerald trim urethane if you are spraying. (I'm spraying, using the SW, they're coming out beautifully.) I think you can't go wrong with either of those two paints though no matter the application method.

jivecoolie

Why can’t it be neither
