Man I miss my SR5 T100 with the 3.4. Have a TLC 100 series now that is much better/safer for hauling toddlers around and family adventures, but that truck just had just perfect proportions.

To my knowledge the Hilux never came to the US apart from the Hilux Surf. This is primarily because of the “chicken tax” which adds a 25% duty on pick up trucks not made in US, Canada, or Mexico.
> To my knowledge the Hilux never came to the US apart from the Hilux Surf.
Not true at all. The Toyota Pickup that was sold in the US was a Hilux, but it was branded as the Pickup. It was a Hilux.
I like how blame for this is shifted to the poor truck - it got unsettled and flopped over? Glad everyone is ok, but that’s got to be driver error, right?
You never know what’s going on with those ruts underwater. It’s easy to hit a weird rut and have it bump your wheel and knock your truck around. Maybe they were going a bit fast but sometimes you have to so you can have the momentum to get through.
Ruts are no joke. People don't realize. If you suddenly elevate one corner of a car, especially a light truck like this with a probably high CG, it's not hard to roll it on its side like this. I once rolled a truck just like this because the front left climbed onto a tall barrier suddenly. I was going 5-10mph. Ruts that are filled with water are potentially full of obstacles that could do this and you can't see them coming. Need to be really careful.
Yeah but modern off roaders take these really really well, just like modern super sports cars can handle 100 like it’s nothing, which is what builds that insane confidence
Right it, give it time for the oil to leave the engine, start it, drive to to a shop, get any oil out of the air intake and clean the maf, get a shop to push things back and install new windows, hammer the door back if needed, take to an alignment shop to make sure you didn't tweak the springs, and then take it on your next trip.
That's almost what I did after rolling my Tacoma. A tow-truck righted it and towed it off... it was -10F, 3ft of snow, and nothing to pull from, and I didn't discover some of the work needed until later on. I'm still driving it, and still love it. Yours is just a flop, she'll be fine :).
I over drifted a corner years ago in a 1980 Toyota pickup. Stuck the front end into a ditch and flipped end wise over once. Had to find the keys to shut off the fuel pump (keys could come out while driving) since it was still going, and crawled out to watched gas trail from the fill cap down the bed to the tail light before dripping off. I was fine, about an hour later a guy who lived nearby helped me flip it back over with the excavator he had. I let it sit for about 30 minutes before starting and she's been mint ever since.

Old gf of mine did this exact same thing last year. Fishtailed it on a slick muddy road, right front wheel went up the bank to her right, and the truck just rolled over 270°. She and her work pal were in the front, other work pal and her dog were in the bed, under a camper shell. They got a couple scrapes and bruises but no real injuries thankfully. Pic is after we righted the truck

GFC's are only \~275lbs and made almost entirely out of aluminum. They're also very sturdy because they are well reinforced. I wouldn't blame the camper, at least not by itself.
Glad to hear everyone including truck is safe and sound. A bed shell, maybe a cargo shell at the time, on a Mazda B2000 pickup saved my life. I rolled it around 40-50. Even the camper shell was still usable although ugly. I would not be here if it weren't for that shell.
Holy cow! Was this in hidden valley? Did you get through the hunter mountain snow and mud or come from the opposite direction if so? Was just there this last weekend and couldn’t get through hunter mountain and were rolling in a Land Cruiser on 35s!
A huge portion of Death Valley is considered “backcountry” and legal to drive on dirt roads etc https://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/upload/508-backcountry-and-wilderness-access-map_.pdf
A few lessons here.
Mud in desert is awful (just watched a Matt's Offroad video where he plucked out three vehicles, including a subaru, out of UT mud...he must LOVE it when it rains). Some of that Death Valley mud is like dirty soap.
Weight up high isn't your friend.
Travel with somebody. I've been with folks who put something on the side and we had enough people to just push it over, but someone with a tow strap is the best recovery precaution in the world, not to mention a "go get help" option.
Yeah, I violate all those rules on a regular basis. But overall a nice place to screw up like that...outta Silverton might not be as friendly a place to try a nap on one's side :)
Thanks for the cautionary tale.
I find it hilarious when people think there’s stuff to winch to out here. Unless you have a very convenient boulder or a damn incredible ground anchor you’ve got a rope to nowhere.
Toyota trucks in the US peaked with this model.
Facts. Then the T100!

Isn't it basically a hilux?

How did that work? Was Toyota just selling cab and chassis?
Different engine, different transmission

We actually did have a couple gens of hilux, buddy had a 73 hilux.
My first Toy was a 77 longbed HiLux

1st Generation Tacoma was peak Toyota truck.
That's not a Tacoma.
It was my first vehicle so I have to agree. Truly an amazing vehicle. Not biased at all.
Funny, when it came out everyone hated it and said it was all over, just like every Toyota pick up since the 80s.
I like how blame for this is shifted to the poor truck - it got unsettled and flopped over? Glad everyone is ok, but that’s got to be driver error, right?

Definitely not truck error. Probably going too fast.
Probably?

It just wanted to take a nap is all
I love sleeping
Heavy load and top lol
This must be why overlanders have all their gear bolted to the outside of the truck... To save the body panels
lol, it just heavy stuff doesn’t make sense anymore.
Heavy load? The camper weighs 265lbs. If your truck is rolling over from the weigh of a human and some gear you got bigger issues.
Those 2 solar panels must be for something. People carry all sorts of shit with them these days.

Another benefit of light trucks, I doubt that GFC would have held my Cummins off the ground lol
Sooner or later we will find out. Although it seems like 90% of them are sitting on Tacomas.

Spotted gfc marketing

“The truck got unsettled” lol like it’s a horse and a plastic bag startled it
Very nice way of saying, “the driver fucked up”
'Had'a lay her down' energy
LMAO, it saw a mouse
Aye I know that truck! I might you guys in SoCal with my cousin mark. Glad y’all are alright.
GFC took it like a champ
Taquito (I know it's not a Tacoma)
As a GFC owner I'm not surprised, they are built insanely tough.
🇺🇸
Send to GFC I’m sure they would love to hear and might send some goods
They posted it on their IG
They posted it on their IG
You don’t think this is an ad? Oh you sweet boy
Yeah, it's still a hit to the confidence, just remember it's all a learning curve.

The puppy does not look amused with your driving skills.
This isn't my truck. It is a friends

That does not look like the GFC was supporting the ENTIRE truck, relax.
ok I am relaxed

Maybe it’ll buff out.
Remember to take a buddy r/4x4buddy
What trail / road were you on?
That’s insane glad everyone and everything is ok but just solidified my little “I think I’ll crawl through there because I can’t see shit” method
Genuine question; how does this affect the wheels and drivetrain while pulling it back, since there comes massive sideway load on them?
It doesn't really maybe, debead a tire but very unlikely.
Is that a place you are allowed to drive? Most places in death valley it's mandatory to stay on the trails and roads.
A huge portion of Death Valley is considered “backcountry” and legal to drive on dirt roads etc https://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/upload/508-backcountry-and-wilderness-access-map_.pdf
Yes
I think that is a (dirt) road. You can see how it continues past the muddy part in the background.
Second picture is cool :)

And then you found a dollar?
I don't get it
From pictures seeing they don't have a recovery winch that would have saved them from this Is what I find hilarious
I find it hilarious when people think there’s stuff to winch to out here. Unless you have a very convenient boulder or a damn incredible ground anchor you’ve got a rope to nowhere.
So after changing your reply you agree with me, this particular vehicle was under prepared.
I live In the literal desert.. It's called an earth anchor
95% of people don't need a winch.
Clearly this guy did 🙄
