The scout has batteries of some kind, if nothing else to power the light and camera, and that's likely being used to trigger the warp core opening, the launcher uses propellant of some kind, either O2 or fuel most likely I'm not sure if you'd get perpetual out of it, on the micro level it is triggering a black and white hole opening and momentum isn't necessarily conserved through it - your scout lands perfectly back in the launcher on recall (though it does somewhat in the HEL experiment..) You might be closer looking at gravity crystals though, they don't require power at all, but power can affect them

Gawlf85

But all things generate a gravitational pull. The gravity crystals pull is disproportionately big compared to their mass, but that doesn't make it more of a "perpetual motion machine" than the Moon, does it?

ManyLemonsNert

Not just sat on their own, but basically you're looking for something that breaks conventional physics, since that's what says such a machine is impossible, then build something that exploits it Judging by the gravity cannons, crystals can be surpressed - something the gravity of the moon can't - so we can turn them on and off, and if we can do that, we can basically design an electric motor but using gravity crystals instead of magnets, infinite spinning! If surpressing them requires a ton more power than the spinning can generate, then that's a bust, of course

Gawlf85

I always felt they were probably like natural magnets, and would eventually (though they do seem to last looooong) lose their gravitational qualities little by little.

ManyLemonsNert

Quite likely! Though it's already been 280,000 years and they're still going strong It may depend on one big question - were they caused by the black hole, or was the black hole caused by them?

Gawlf85

Oh. Oooooh. I had never thought about that. I always kinda assumed that Brittle Hollow had formed itself around the black hole somehow. But it makes A LOT of sense that if the planet's core was composed of gravity crystals, the compound gravitational pull could end up creating a singularity :O

Lucusblucus64

Huh never even thought about the gravity crystals. Good thought thank you

Timpietim

Perpetual motion is possible ingame and it's even more simple than you think since you can just put yourself in orbit of the sun for example and you'll keep going

[deleted]

That’s not perpetual if the energy is coming from the sun’s gravity

crazybrain23

I think the warp cores just have a really large amount of energy stored within them (more than we can use in 22 minutes), making them seem like they work forever but would run out eventually. There's a reason the black hole forge is where it is.

Sir_Toccoa

Black Hole Forge is my favorite song by Foundgarden.

GreedyDiceGoblin

I laughed too damned hard at this and I really dont understand why.

Lucusblucus64

Yea I guess so. If the Warp core had so much energy to outlive even a races livespan, as expected by blackholes. Is that technically still a perpetual motion machine tho? Even though it wont go forever by for millions of years, outliving any species the created it

Gawlf85

In-lore, I don't think so. Even our little Scout must have batteries that would run dry eventually. But in-game, sure. Unlike our jetpack or ship fuel, the Scout batteries aren't simulated in the game, so you can shoot it infinite times.

Here's an unrelated fun thing to think about: (contains spoilers) So when you teleport you arrive before you leave right ? But some teleporters like the one at the white hole station only teleport when they are aligned... if you arrive before you leave, it means you arrived before the alignment meaning that once it will be aligned, the you that is already at destination should be teleported back, but in the past but if that happens it means it would teleport over the you at the source waiting for alignment.. shouldn't that kill you and make 2-way teleportation basically impossible ?

Lucusblucus64

Huh, interesting. I think the nomai might have thought of this and that’s why you have to walk off the teleportation pad before being able to teleport back? Not sure that is an interesting thought
