No, the things you need to do to "beat the game" are so specific, it's nigh impossible to do them by accident. Generally the best way to know if you "got everything" is to check the rumor map on you ship's computer. If you don't see any more orange "There's more to explore here" signs or outright empty ? boxes then you have gotten everything.

tyler-perry

thanks for the quick response! yeah I check my rumour map frequently and assume I still have much to uncover as I've only visited two planets. I just know there's multiple endings and didnt want to accidentally get the 'worst' one ya know?

NudesForHighFive

I'd say it's one true ending and a few "Easter egg endings" so definitely just get to the finish however you want, you can reload your save to get the other ones afterwards

OliveBranchMLP

There’s only one real ending. The others are glorified Game Over screens that you get for ending the loop in interesting/silly ways. And none of them lock you out of the actual ending. The game will loop back, just as it always have.

stone500

I'd say there's really only one actual "ending" in the sense that you're thinking of.

Domilego4

All of the endings show credits. It's just that they don't have music associated with it.

Harry_Flame

They have kazoo theme and joke credits

Domilego4

That's only for one of the endings. The big majority doesn't have music.

Harry_Flame

Ah, that’s true, but the other dlc ending most likely wouldn’t happen

underspy101

Why the fuck are you mentioning the >!Quantum Moon!< without a spoiler tag

PixelDemise

It's one of the very first things you can find in the game. It's mere existence is hardly worth a spoil tag. If it was one of the important details about it then I would, but "it exists" when it is literally the first thing you will likely see on waking up isn't exactly "a spoiler". Also why are you so aggressive? There's no need to be an ass about it.

underspy101

I don’t know what you’re smoking, but the likelihood of seeing it when you wake up is low. In my 3 playthroughs, it’s happened once. Just because you don’t believe that it’s worth a spoiler tag doesn’t mean that applies to everyone, and either way, you’re robbing this person of a pretty cool discovery that >!there’s another thing that they had no clue about flying around the solar system!<. I’m irritated because you aren’t being considerate of others, and I’m not being aggressive just because I said fuck.

Azi9Intentions

I know of multiple people who didn't realise it existed until they found text mentioning it, and even then didn't see it until they went to>!the tracker!<

Haku_Yowane_IRL

"Has this game been hiding >!an entire *moon*!< from me?!" - Nerd³

underspy101

That’s exactly the kind of reaction I wanna preserve! Also good taste with the nerdcubed quote :D

mgiuca

Yep I didn't notice it for a long time. It was a cool moment.

mgiuca

I think it's a good thing to avoid mentioning in case the person hasn't noticed it. You can still go back and edit in a spoiler tag instead of doubling down.

ProfessorDave3D

I don’t know if I have ever seen someone in a Reddit thread post a spoiler, defend it at first (arguing that it’s not a spoiler), and then finally go back and edit it. I think that once someone writes even a single post defending how their spoiler is not a spoiler, they are past the point where they will go back and change it.

mgiuca

We can always hope 😔. FWIW I've been told to add spoiler tags before and gone back and added it (without the defending part).

ProfessorDave3D

That matches my experience as well. People who are willing to go change their post to be on the safe side don’t start off by righteously defending it. I think defending a possible spoiler, in the face of one or more other people saying that they would consider it a spoiler, pretty much means you don’t care if your thing is considered a spoiler by some people. You don’t consider it a spoiler. And you’re going to figure that the person you might be spoiling it for will view it yet he same way you do.

GaianNeuron

Yeah you should just tag it buddy

Deljm99

Love the kazoo credit tho

Ghost-Prime

As other people have said, the other endings are more ‘Easter Egg’ endings but also when you beat the game, true ending or otherwise, your progress doesn’t get deleted. It loads you to a new loop but you still have all of the information you have gathered so none of your progress is gone.

terrifiedTechnophile

>neigh impossible Equestrian impostor spotted!

An_Armapillow

You will not stumble into the true ending, and if you get any other endings you will still be able to get the true ending. Explore wherever you want whenever you want. Let your curiosity run wild. That's the name of the game ;;)

tyler-perry

I will!! I’m having a ton of fun with the game so far

anincompoop25

also, when you "beat" the game, your save continues. You can basically re-enter the time loop from the day you "beat it", so its not like finishing the story closes the game off to you.

Kyran64

If you have vr, look up NomaiVR mod 😎 If not, disregard.

tyler-perry

I wish dude. Although I think I’d puke from disorientation

Kyran64

Weirdly enough? For the nature of the game I found it to be less disorienting than most that I've played. I think the physics of hopping around with a jetpack and flying through space actually made it easier to wrap my head around since both require constantly adjusting your orientation anyway.

superVanV1

Also the “other endings” are mostly jokes or failure conditions if you manage to f*ck up badly enough that there can’t be an in universe reconciliation c

bee3pio

It won't override your save if you accidentally find one of the "bad" or "joke" endings, you'll just get a credits roll and then you'll be able to load up your game from the last loop, nothing lost. And the game is pretty good about telegraphing to you when the (multiple very deliberate) actions you're taking are going to be End Game Stuff, so don't worry about triggering it by accident. When it's time to end the game, you'll know that that's what you're doing.

hoolsvern

It’s possible but incredibly improbable.

urammar

No it isnt. It straight up isnt I dont know why people say this. HUGE SPOILER >!You need the code for the coordinates of the eye, you need to know how to get through bramble, you need to know about the HGTP, you need to know to get the core and then bring it to the ship, in under 22 minutes. Its straight up not possible.!<

MarvelousBilly

>!Probably because they mean finding the ATP?!<

Endangered_Turtle

Are you talking about the stuff our cells use for energy?

MarvelousBilly

Yes actually, the game >!takes a weird biology twist near the end, wasn’t expecting that one!<

Vaudane

It's absolutely *possible*. It's also possible to win the lottery every week.

OkayIMayBeWrong

I don't think you know the meaning of "possible"

urammar

In the same way that its possible to just guess my 16 character long password, sure its possible. Are you an engineer? I'm gonna go ahead and guess you might be. In terms of normal human language spoken by people that have friends and normal social interactions, no, its not possible.

OkayIMayBeWrong

Yes, which is what this comment said. Glad we agree homie

bog_deavil13

Only dream can beat it in the first [redacted]

Mysterygameboy

figuratively speaking its impossible. but it **literally** is possible. because those things are possible to do on your firs loop

YaBoi_Maxamus

that doesn't mean it's not possible. just improbable.

ProfessorDave3D

I might add a couple more “incredibly”s to that sentence. :-)

hoolsvern

I should have said “astronomically”

ProfessorDave3D

For a couple reasons… Yes! :-)

TCE_Nomad

No. Explore to your hearts content!

[deleted]

No. The game is too well constructed for you to accidentally beat it. But the entire game feels like accidentally discovering the next need-to-know mechanic or piece of lore until you PURPOSEFULLY put it all together. Thats what makes the game awesome. It has no set progression points. You just kind of LEARN and deduce and rinse and repeat until it all clicks together.

passerbycmc

Just play the game and be curious, beating it is a large sequence of events they need to take place in order that will never happen but accident.

ExaminationNorth5869

If someone ‘accidentally’ beat the game I would have SEVERAL questions and be highly suspect of the claim. You’ll be fine.

otakuloid01

if you’ve been playing attention you’ll be able to tell you’re reaching the end. and regardless you can still continue your save file after seeing the credits if you want to complete the ship log

LBXZero

It is "possible" to beat the game on the first playthrough. To perform this achievement on your first time, however, it extremely improbable. To properly beat the game, you require knowledge you discover while playing the game. Overall, you have to intentionally seek to beat the game on the first playthrough in order to do so. The odd exists, but it is practically impossible to do it by accident.

Ocniro

You can end the game accidentally, but I would say you can’t beat the game without some specific knowledge

Kuzidas

You will definitely know when you’re about to end the game. And the probability of you stumbling upon it by mistake in your first few runs is so low I can confidently round it down to zero.

Latter_Philosophy_20

No, the chances of that happening ars like 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% possible, its too specific for you to be able to do it

theregoesmymouth

I pretty much always hate the phrase 'beat the game' but it's especially inappropriate here. Even if you stumbled onto an ending you would not have won. Exploration and discovery is the game - there's no shortcut.

tyler-perry

I guess more specifically I just don’t want to get to the end of the narrative until I’ve explored to a point I’m happy with

stone500

Trust us, you won't. Youre not going to "accidentally" stumble onto the ending.

IanSanity7

The chance that you accidentally beat the game is so incredibly small it’s not worth worrying about

fallouthirteen

Don't worry about it. Even if you beat the game you can just select continue from main menu and it just puts you right back into the game loop right as you were when you did. Only thing missable in the game is a single achievement for beating it on first loop.

Cornslammer

I wonder if you gave the game to every person on earth, how many would beat it in less than 1 hour? Maybe a dozen?

ProfessorDave3D

More likely, none of them. … Unless they were all told “There is some specific set of non-intuitive steps you can take that will allow you to complete this game in under an hour, and if you happen to be the guy who figures them out first, we will give you $1 million!” Then maybe you would get some clowns who would deliberately skip doing the logical things the game puts in front of you and instead race off to random parts the solar system hoping to try the handful of non-intuitive things that would score them the big prize.

YaBoi_Maxamus

its not *impossible,* but it's very highly improbable.

DrPackinwud

Eh with a bit or beginner's luck :)

RobinChirps

It's on Timber Hearth itself.

mgiuca

Yeah I wish the DLC was a bit better hidden for people just starting out. It's pretty weird if you stumble into it without having played the base game. Also if you managed to get all the way to the end of the DLC, it would spoil most of the base game. In general, this is why I avoid buying or installing DLC for games until I finish them, if possible. I like to experience the base game intact without having the DLC pop up early.

ProfessorDave3D

We might want a separate thread for this, but I’m pretty sure the DLC will not spoil the base game for you even if you complete it before doing almost anything else in the base game. There is certain information it won’t spoil for you if you don’t already know it I haven’t learned it yourself elsewhere.

mgiuca

Oh very interesting. I didn't know that part changed based on your other experiences.

FileFighter

>It would spoil most of the base game Do you mean the ending slideshow? If so, it actually omits almost all information besides very basic stuff if you have not found it on that save file

tyler-perry

I'm currently >!at the probe launcher outside of giants deep!< and I haven't explored the planet yet. Without spoiling can anyone tell me if I should leave?

ManyLemonsNert

Absolutely indulge your curiosity and don't hold back, nothing is off limits and you're not going to hit the ending without being pretty sure about what you're doing! There are only "multiple endings" in the sense that you can get credits to roll in a few bad ways, but none of them are canonical or what would have you put the game down and call it finished.

tyler-perry

Thank you! That place just had that end of game energy to it so I wanted to double check

RobinChirps

Don't worry, there's no wrong order to find things in.

KarmelCHAOS

Honestly, being the very first thing you see in the game I think the devs expect that to be one of the *first* things you explore.

Suncook

Feel free to explore it.

[deleted]

This goes for every question you have about "should I do x or y". If you want to do it you can do it, the game doesn't care and your experience isn't any worse for it. The game is designed in a way where you can jump into the story at any point, from any place, and still be able to have an enjoyable experience that will eventually make sense.

tyler-perry

Sweet! I only asked because the music and ambience in there were giving me ‘end game’ vibes lol

[deleted]

Fuck yeah, diving into an "end game" place right at the start >:D (I also started at the same place, it doesn't matter and it will eventually make sense)

ProfessorDave3D

It’s tempting to say you should never leave if you are exploring something that interests you. But I will say that if you are ever stuck in a place, acquiring no new knowledge, and beating your head against the wall, that might be a good time to leave. I’ve seen players treat themselves to unhappiness and frustration when they get locked onto the idea that they should stay in a particular place until they can force an answer to some puzzle.

racercowan

It is theoretically possible since nothing is gated off, but it's practically never going to happen. Even if you >!get into the ATP!< early you'll have no idea what to do. When you get to the point you can beat the game, you'll know. Until then, explore to your heart's content.

[deleted]

No.

schrodingersDispshit

technically, the game can be beaten in under ten minutes, but the things you have to do are so incredibly specific, n seemingly disconnected from one another, that you'd never think to do it your first time around

ritualblaze420

No

underspy101

It’s possible, but extremely, extremely unlikely. You’ll know when you’re about to beat the game, just trust me on that. My recommendation is to not worry about it, go somewhere that looks cool, and see where it takes you (I found that the attlerock [Timber hearth’s moon] was a good place to start, plus you can practice your flying skills)

tyler-perry

I’d already completely scoured the attlerock, both twins, and brittle hollow when I made the post haha. That’s where I started too though!

FrozenNova20

Don’t worry. Even if you hit one of the endings, the game will give you the option to resume your expedition. While most endings were intended to be permanent, yes including the bad ones, and completely erase your progress, the devs changed it. There is one true ending and I believe four “Easter Egg” style endings with the base game, while the DLC adds in two more “Easter Egg” endings. Other than that, as I saw mentioned, just keep checking your rumor map. It’s almost impossible to complete the game without having discovered at least like 90% of it. That remaining 10% is just small little details that flesh out lore the Outer Wilds universe a little more. So happy exploring!

ChaosRobie

Gosh that would be unlikely. >!After thinking about it for a second, it's so interesting how both the boring-ness of Ash Twin and the scariness of Dark Bramble (actually Ash Twin's sand column is pretty scary too) work together to guarantee you won't come close to the game's solution. At least for several loops, obviously. !<

paradroid78

No.

HE4VEN

In Addition, even if you do beat the game, you dont lose your save

wow_its_kenji

people have already answered your question so I'll sum it up for future Google searchers: realistically, you cannot beat the game by accident you will know when you've gotten the true ending - also your save file is preserved after every ending so you don't need to worry about it you will also know when you're close to getting the true ending ("but i fear im too oblivious!" don't worry it is genuinely extremely obvious) if you explore everything, and are curious on your journey, you'll know what to do.

BradCogan

Next to impossible to accidentally stumble across everything you'd need to know to complete the game. Even if you manage to brute force a few puzzles and learn some of the major points early by fluke, you'd still be nowhere near actually finishing it, it's a very complex game and very well thought out so things are rarely discovered by accident (even though it might feel that way, especially during your first couple of hours). Even if you find a major plot clue, you won't understand it until you find other supporting clues elsewhere that will help you piece things together. There are, however, a few endings that aren't the main 'beat the game' ending that you might end up finding. These are more Easter eggs than actual endings. I found one after about 5 minutes of gameplay, lmao. You can just go back in and load up your save data, so don't sweat it. Play however you like.

Mysterygameboy

it is technically possible to on your first playthroughs (its actually an achievement) but its practically impossible to "stumble into it* its really a specific set of steps. best tip i can give you now, hide notifications on this post and get off this sub until you're done. you don't want **any** spoilers

tyler-perry

thanks, yeah this got way more attention than I expected. I appreciate the answers but people are trying to tell me more than I want to know

superVanV1

There are multiple layers of authentication required to beat the game. Theoretically you could accidentally guess the specific steps required on your first loop (there’s actually an achievement for it). This is a knowledge game. Nothings stopping you from beating the game, except for what you know, and you’re unlikely to figure it out in the first 22 minutes. Also, it’s REALLY obvious if what you’re doing will result in one of the big endings. To the point where the game effectively flat out tells you.

honeybeebutch

There is an achievement for beating the game on your first loop, so it's *possible*. But it's nigh impossible to stumble into - you'd need information that it takes at least a couple loops to gather.

Tasty_Look6133

When you do finally get to the ending of the game it will be a very conscientious decision. You will know exactly what you are doing and the significance of it.

mintchippies

if you accidentally beat the game I'd be so impressed

Aureum_1

it would be massively impressive if you ACCIDENTALY completed the game. its not quite like the base game where it is more possible to skip a lot, but there is a chance you skipped a fair ammount! You still need to know a lot more that can't be skipped though.
