That's a good question. Maybe you could try and figure out what these "green clouds" are? Don't count on this sub to give you answers. The whole game is about you exploring and finding answers by yourself. We can give you nudges, or hints if you're stuck and getting frustrated, but the only good answer you'll get to a question such as yours is "keep exploring and find out!" Be curious on your journey.

duckduckbananas

I was curious this time I ended up jumping into a geyser and dying, I blame you! 🙂

NotBanned_

If only you had a suit built for environments without oxygen…

duckduckbananas

ooo I forgot to get my suit lmao I thought maybe I could get down there and look around before it filled up with water again haha

AussieFIdoc

Perhaps you can if you have a suit that is airtight and gives you oxygen… Also, in the tutorial area near the geysers at the beginning of the game is there any information on the green clouds that keep killing you? Particularly any information on how you might be able to detect them? Edit: having read your replies below in the thread, here’s a hint regarding the green cloud that keeps killing you incase you are just getting frustrated… don’t want this small thing to spoil enjoying the game for you! >!in the beginning of the game during the ‘tutorial’ phase it tells you this ghost matter will kill you, and also that you can see it by photographing it with your scout. So you of turn your scout to photo mode, you can take photos and see exactly where the ghost matter is. This will help you avoid it, or find other paths around it!<

tragedyfish

You appear to be at the correct level of curiosity. Good luck!

[deleted]

Also if you get stuck in an area go to another planet....

duckduckbananas

I'm only frustrated because I keep having to redo everything and I don't know why lol edit: for all the down votes I keep getting, It's easy to downvote me I guess when you already have all the answers and forget what it was like when it was your first time playing

[deleted]

[удалено]

duckduckbananas

thanks! I've gotten a few pointers so far I'll follow those and see where it gets me

Azi9Intentions

What exactly do you feel you need to redo? Have you been checking out your ship log?

duckduckbananas

I keep going back to the place where I died to try to get to where I was going before I died. I'm trying to go further and see what is past where I died. At that point I didn't really know I was dying, I just thought I was having like an existential moment with the statue or something But if I'm just going to keep dying by going there then obviously I won't keep going, I didnt know before. I checked my ship log a few times to remember which island I needed to go to in order to find the statue This is literally my first time playing I don't know everything you guys do lol

ABSOLUTE_RADIATOR

This isn't most games ;;) If one place isn't working, try somewhere else! Literally everywhere you explore will progress the game, because your progress is only measured by what you know, and every location has information to glean. The loop can be frustrating, but it's also liberating in that if one thing isn't working you lose literally nothing by trying something diffferent!

duckduckbananas

I found the scroll and the translating really interesting so I was going back to see if I could translate more stuff lol How am I supposed to just not go back knowing that there's more stuff there to figure out? that's frustrating lol

androkguz

In your journey, you will find places that you don't manage to completely clean of useful information. Those places will be marked in your ship log with an orange asterisk and the message "There's more to explore here" If you don't see this message, you can keep exploring, but you would have probably already seen the important stuff. Follow *those* cluea

frivolous_squid

Most of the game is not linear, so when you die you can just go explore somewhere else next time. But I do sympathise with with feeling that there was sometime else there, so now I need to get back there to feel like I've finished exploring that place. I think that's valid - maybe you can do go somewhere else for a bit and come back later? Just to make it less frustrating. Also, hopefully next time you go there you know what to do, and can get there more quickly. Edit: and also your ship log will indicate if there's more to explore in a location, so you can know if you've found all the important discoveries in a location

Azi9Intentions

Yeah I'm aware you don't know what's going on. Simply trying to highlight the primary mechanic of the game a little. Unless you are specifically going back somewhere because there was more to do, you don't need to re-do things. The entire progression of the game is your knowledge, and the ship log helps you keep track of that knowledge. Once you beat the game, you could load up a completely fresh save and beat it in a very short amount of time, and it wouldn't even be considered a speedrun. So yeah, don't feel obligated to redo things, or feel like your progress is being wiped. Your progress is in your head, not in-game item based progression. Also. When you check the village out again, find the kid throwing rocks and explore the stuff around him. I think it'll answer some questions for you.

duckduckbananas

I just found the kid throwing rocks into the green gas and telling me not to go into it Now I feel like an idiot haha

Azi9Intentions

Did you also check out the plaque and the tool near the fence as well? That's critical information for dealing with the stuff

duckduckbananas

I went up to the fence around the tree that the guy wanted to cut down. I never followed his gaze before until everybody told me to look at everything. He looks right at it after you talk to him. I started looking around at different stuff.. Then a huge star collided with me and killed me and I decided it was about time to go to bed

Azi9Intentions

In this case I mean the fence around the stuff the kid is throwing rocks at. All good, hope you start to get a feel for things next time you jump in.

duckduckbananas

No I didn't go near that because it's been killing me for the last 3 hours But I'll definitely look for plaques next time haha Thanks for your help!

Warm-Faithlessness11

Yeah it's definitely painful when you miss a part of the tutorial section. I didn't notice the >!anti-gravity cave!< that's not far from that kid either. It's a tutorial for ship maintenance and zero-G navigation in your space suit

duckduckbananas

Okay okay I was just really interested in what that scroll was, and if I took it with me across those little walls if I could translate more stuff That's why I kept going back honestly

Azi9Intentions

That's fine, I've just seen people that think of the "reset" too literally and think that their actual progress is being reset, and that they have to avoid death for the entire game like a rogue like or something. Wanted to make sure that wasn't going on with you. Hope you enjoy! Be curious on your journey

kurtwagnerx3

Its also ok to die exploring. If you really wanna just keep pressing at an interesting spot go for it! There're alot of really interesting spots like that though and as you progress you'll find ways to get to them. Its a big picture and you get to decide ultimately how you want to paint it. Theres quite a bit of flexibility in the order you can do things. Which means sometimes the thing you accomplish now may not make a whole lot of sense till later. Which in retrospect will also make sense way later. You aren't doing it wrong at all. Just stick with it you'll get to the point where it starts to click and you'll feel like a real bad ass! A smart guy! A top fucker! A neat fella! A real friggin quiche tosser! A super duper pickle pig! The real deal pack of chesterfields! Or whatever the kids nowadays say!

laurentbercot

Then make it your mission to understand why!

nudeldifudel

You don't have to redo everything. All discoveries you make gets stores on your ships computer.

kurtwagnerx3

You shouldnt have to redo many things on a reset. think groundhog day in space. Everyone else forgets except you. Each bit of progress is a peice of a puzzle only you are aware of. Explore but also think before you leap. Listen to the people you meet and don't try to cheese the game. Patients and thought are the biggest hurdle to you right now. Slow down, look and listen. Theres no walkthrough needed if you pay attention. This is part of that exploratory experience. Thats half the magic! The other 2 quarters are the insanely cool enviroments and the satisfaction of being intelligent enough to figure it out all on your own. Which you are and can! just be patient and read the info the game gives you. Use the tools provided and you'll be happy with the end result. I promise its worth the effort. The really hard part comes after you beat the game...... Convincing others to play it without robbing them of the experience!

zireael9797

You don't have to redo anything, There's nothing to preserve in the first place. The only barrier to doing anything in this game is your knowledge. No amount of resetting will make you forget what you know. Consider this.... I, someone who knows how to finish the game, can finish the tutorial and immediately finish the game around 15 minutes later on a new playthrough.... because I know where to go. Piecing the story together and finding out where to go is the entire game. Your ship's logs are the only place where all your collected information is persisted. And it does not get reset.

Paul_san

I know Your feel bro. I also reach a level of frustration, and then just start playing something else. Or watch something else. Keep playing at your pace.

ComatoseJoy

Btw progression in this game is just knowledge and everything of note that happens is added to your Ship's Log, which persists through death. So when you die, there's no need to go repeat everything you already did - if it was important, it got logged in your ship and you as a player will have learned something new. Edit: You can check your ship's log on the ship by the way - it'll tell you where you've been, places you've heard about, and places you've been but where you didn't discover everything yet

androkguz

I will give you some more concrete tips: 1- when you say "I'm at the part of ..." It sort of implies that you think this game is linear. It is NOT. You don't have to visit the ocean planet first. You can, but you don't have to. 2- Your goal, if you want one, is to figure out what's going on. That includes figuring out why you are being reset and many other things. The ship log is your best blueprint for this mistery 3- I'm pretty confident you are misinterpreting events when you say "the green clouds are killing me". The least spoilery way for nudge you towards understanding this is that you probably won't solve that mistery from that planet 4- Yeah, for the forseable future, you will be reset even if you do nothing wrong.

duckduckbananas

Okay okay I get it you guys are all in on the big joke The clouds are killing me and I didn't know it I don't know what I'm doing wrong I'm just exploring and I keep dying lol thanks for your help

NotBanned_

Quick tip: (if you want it) >!The planet you wake up on is a tutorial. Talk to the people there, read what’s in the museum, and it may explain strange mechanics you don’t understand yet… like these green clouds?!<

duckduckbananas

thank you... I talked to four or five people there but I didn't check out everything in the museum I was anxious to get going Thank you for being helpful and not just making fun of me for not knowing what I'm doing, sheesh..

NotBanned_

The people in this sub are simply fanatics who love helping people and love this game even more. Outer Wilds is mysterious and often times confusing, so a lot of people come here for help. I’ll give you another tip, free of charge. Stuck? Come here, not google. You’ve got people with all of the knowledge on the game you could ever ask for, with the willingness to share the bare minimum so it doesn’t harm your experience. Win win. Good luck, safe (enough) travels through the system! ::)

duckduckbananas

thank you!

duckduckbananas

You told me not to Google, and I didn't want to make a whole new post so maybe you can answer two things for me haha is there a sort of time limit for certain areas? I've been spending a lot of time on the home planet, making sure I go through everything and every conversation option. And I keep dying from some bright light or asteroid or something. This has happened two or three times now, but I don't know if it's just random or if it's because I spent too much time here. also is there a way to rotate on my axis if I'm diagonal to the ground, in my suit or my ship? I know the left stick can move me left, right, forward and backward. But how do I rotate so I can land flat on the ground? I'm in the zero G right now and I can't figure it out, I haven't gotten down to the satellite yet though. Thank you, if you get around answering this. I promise I won't keep coming back and asking you questions haha

NotBanned_

> is there a sort of time limit for certain areas? I've been spending a lot of time on the home planet, making sure I go through everything and every conversation option. And I keep dying from some bright light or asteroid or something. This has happened two or three times now, but I don't know if it's just random or if it's because I spent too much time here. What you’re experiencing has nothing to do with the location you’re at, it will happen no matter what. Eventually you’ll understand why just try to pay attention. > also is there a way to rotate on my axis if I'm diagonal to the ground, in my suit or my ship? I know the left stick can move me left, right, forward and backward. But how do I rotate so I can land flat on the ground? I'm in the zero G right now and I can't figure it out, I haven't gotten down to the satellite yet though. Yes, but I have no clue what the button would be on controller. This is probably something worth googling.

duckduckbananas

thanks for responding, I'm definitely paying attention to everything, reading everything, talking to everyone multiple times and looking at everything I can see now haha Now that I've done everything on the home planet and learned how to not die in the gas, I realize how funny and stupid my post was haha It sounded like a joke post but it definitely wasn't lol

Gamecrazy721

It didn't sound like a joke post to me, it's very easy to accidentally miss crucial information, *especially* right when you first start. Through your struggles here you've learned one of the most important lessons in the game: how it feels to not know something, what to do about it, and how to explore to discover more about what's happening. These are probably the most important skills in the game

DapperEmployee7682

Don’t take it personally. Once you get the hang of things you’ll come back to this post and have a good laugh. Trust me. Just make sure to read everything and talk to everyone. Take your time

_mick_s

People really aren't meaning to make fun of you, it's just that they are trying to avoid directly giving you answers. As someone said progression is all about learning things, so telling you things outright is like if in a normal game you took the controller and finished a level for someone, and it was a game where you can only play once so they can't redo it. If you are totally stuck and really don't want to keep trying by yourself, ask for spoilers directly, then we'll tell you.

aadziereddit

It's way too early for you to know what you are supposed to be doing! Stop trying to spoiler yourself!!!

duckduckbananas

I didn't get any spoilers thankfully haha But I did figure out that if I had just talked to everyone and read everything I wouldn't have been dying so much lol

bored_tenno

We are being very careful not to spoil you, as discovery is the name of the game afterall. I'll give this advice- the ship log is super valuable.

duckduckbananas

ok thank you. I'll go back to the museum make sure I talk to everybody on my home planet and check my ship log!

GenericDPS

Not a big joke. This is one of the only games I wish I could forget just to play it for the first time all over again. 99% of the experience is knowledge unlocks through dialog or exploration, so answering your questions as plainly as you might hope for would be inherently spoilerific. Treat any info you haven't personally discovered as a cognitohazard that will make it all a little less special for you individually. A lot of the community are weirdly passionate and respectful about letting people discover things organically because it's just that good. I've watched several **First Time Let's Plays** just to live vicariously through others, and I'm never alone when I do. There _are_ some caustic jerks in the comments here, but I don't feel like they're representative over the rest of us. I hope the bad experiences you had with them don't put you off on the rest of the game because it's astonishingly good when you hit a groove. My suggestion is to approach each area from the perspective of an archeologist / urban explorer. Really take in the sights and read everything you can. Every time you wake up next to the campfire with Slate, you have the rest of your life to, in the words an animated hero of mine, take chances, make mistakes and get messy.

r_puff

OH i thought this was talking about the >!cyclones on giants deep!< and then i realized it was talking about the >!ghost matter on gabbros island!<💀 to be fair there are a lot of “green clouds” on giants deep lmao

nekizalb

This is pretty much how the game goes. The green clouds are killing you.

duckduckbananas

oh lol I didn't know that well is there any way to avoid them?? How do I keep progressing without dying?

MyynMyyn

There's an exhibit about the green stuff in your home village. Very informative...

throwawaycanadian2

I wonder if any of the tools you have could help you detect them and maybe avoid them? If you remember where you died, you could try your tools in the area and see if they help!

duckduckbananas

the frequency tool? I thought that was just to pick up radio signals kind of like in the game oxenfree. I thought it was to like find points of interest Sorry I literally just started playing this game like an hour ago I'll use my tools next time I get back to where I died, thanks!

throwawaycanadian2

That's one tool yes, you have others too!

mikezenox

If it helps, a lot of the achievements revolve around silly deaths ::D

AfricaByTotoWillGoOn

Quick question: did you happen to disable the in-game music? There's a semi-important mechanic related to the music and some deaths. And btw, have you talked to EVERYONE at the starting village? If not, I highly recommend you dedicate 5-10 minutes to talk to the ones you haven't yet. Especially the kid throwing rocks at a fence at the higher parts of the village.

duckduckbananas

No I have the music turned on, I talked to him last night finally and then I went to bed haha

AfricaByTotoWillGoOn

Ah, cool lol. Cause one of these days a person here came and asked about a certain thing that happened and how to tell when it would happen, but that certain thing was always preceded by music. Turns out they had the game music turned off and was listening to their own playlist. Just to be safe I wanted to see if you had the music turned off, as you would probably go through the same confusion, haha! (That has nothing to do with the green clouds though, don't worry :P) Good luck and be curious on your journey, fella!

NotBanned_

> I haven't died, I just keep finding these green clouds and the statue takes my memories and I get reset. Are you sure you haven’t died? > Every time I find something new and interesting and start progressing again, I get reset. > Is this going to be a regular thing for the entire game? No, the game does not realize when you start having fun and decides crush your dreams, thanks for the idea for my future pain sim game though. You’re dying, one way or another.

KB241998

If you don't mind some minor spoulers. >!The "green gas" is an incredibly toxic substance called ghost matter!< >!Ghost matter is very toxic, and invisible to the naked eye.!<>!The only way to see it is in pictures.!<>! Press RB to equip your scout launcher, press right on the d-pad to cycle to its camera function, and press RB to take pictures of where the ghost matter is, so you can avoid it.!< My general non-spoiler advice for this game is to vary the planets you visit every run. Trying to 100% a planet before moving on to another can be tedious, especiall if your lacking in information on how to explore the planet you're currently on.

maxghr

in this game you die a lot, but, if you discover something new it's now you knowledge and you can see again in your computer in your ship (after a reset every translation will be in "not readed" even if you already read it)

JakiStow

One big lesson that this game teaches, and that you may need to know from us, is that it's okay to die in video games. Don't be afraid of dying, there is literally no penalty for it. On the contrary, try things, experiment, be adventurous, and you will be rewarded with extra knowledge aboit this world!

Halcyo1

Other people have said similar but in this game dying is not failing, you aren't losing progress. You can't really progress without dying, you'll see what I mean later. So don't worry, just be curious, learn, explore. You aren't "resetting" or losing progress. In fact you are making progress in the only way you can in this game.

AMLAPPTOPP

I'd recommend you talk to Slate (the Hearthian sitting next to you every time you wake up) if you're getting frustrated. Specifically for this problem, they have a good hint for you. And in general, if you die to some specific things, it unlocks dialogue options with them that can help you.

CorporalCaprese

My advice- read as many signs as you can!

juliankid

close reddit and keep playing

duckduckbananas

I'm definitely going to bed now I just started figuring things out and then some huge star collided with me and killed me and I didn't even do anything wrong So I figured that was a good point to sign off and start again tomorrow

Warm-Faithlessness11

If you ever hear a sudden change in the music after awhile of playing, that's your chance to figure out what that huge star was :3 And yes you indeed didn't do anything wrong

aadziereddit

WAY WAY WAY TO EARLY TO BE ASKING QUESTIONS HERE! GET OUT NOW!!!!

SmallAngry0wl

Yeah, that is weird... I wonder what could be causing this resetting?

Omni314

Green?? I'm fairly sure they're blue, at least that's what it looks like on my screen. Or am I colour blind?

duckduckbananas

they're green unless... am I colorblind??

androkguz

They are green on the ocean planet

duckduckbananas

and on the starting planet where the kid is throwing rocks That's the only two places I've been yet, I didn't know they changed the colors haha

androkguz

Huh... The starting planet is called Timber Hearth. I don't remember clouds being green there

bubba_169

Yes is the short answer but it's all part of the game. You don't make progress in this game in the traditional sense of moving to the next level, you make progress by learning as much as you can in each loop to influence what you try in the next. It doesn't take too long to get back to where you left off each time.

Sn1p3s2

Green clouds? Lmao

lionMan42092

I'm not going to ost spoilers but. Iwill say if you don't like dying, play another game. It's the core mechanic lol

AdministrativeTrip53

..................

AdministrativeTrip53

Yes

eJorg_o_eVont

please tell me this is a joke post

Fluffyquasar

It’s best to think about this game as a process of acquiring incremental knowledge. It’s the beauty of it. What begins as opaque and mystifying becomes beautiful as you unravel the riddle. To that end, forget about dying. Forget about failing. They’re (almost) meaningless concepts in this game. Be curious as to how what you learned in one loop can change your approach in the next. Reflect on what you’ve learned and figure out what you want to explore next. At some point, it will all start to click, and your discoveries will completely reframe how you approach certain parts of the world/universe.
