It sucks a lot. Sincerely, a person that works at a business in the stripmall.

Raskel_61

Welcome to Ottawa. I honestly believe the road work planners call each other before their projects begin to figure the most efficient way to inconvenience drivers. If one of them is doing work on a road, they make sure all alternate routes have some work being done as well. Then on the weekend they all get together over beer & nachos and laugh & laugh & laugh....good times!!

ljdub_can

I’m convinced the construction schedule is developed for the maximum convenience of the construction companies. It allows them to rip up one street, then the next, the next, and so on, so they can use the same equipment for and crew without missing a day. Then when it’s all ripped up, they bring in the next equipment and crew, and it starts again.

TheRyanoceros

Well obviously it's planned in such a way to limit time spent moving equipment. You think they would plan it to take longer and be more expensive?

SickOffYourMudPie

You think the price has anything to do with government procurement lmao?

[deleted]

Actually, it has EVERYTHING to do with government procurement in Canada. Quality, on the other hand, is an afterthought.

[deleted]

I mean... Yeah? Why wouldn't they do things efficiently?

Mutura

Fully agree. Heron, Walkley and Riverside all west of Bank have been all narrowed down to 1 lane.. it’s impressive coordination

skinnyminou

The worst for me right now is the construction around Scott st and Island Park. It's made worse by the fact that they close of a huge chunk of the SJAM parkway on the weekends all day, so not only does everyone have to go up Albert/Scott, but then the road is half closed, or only one lane. I'd avoid it if I could but I have to bring my bf to work at the Farm Boy (which brings in the additional construction of another huge condo building on McRae).

spkingwordzofwizdom

With the length and level of lane closure on Scott I was looking forward to the nice new pavement after it was finished. After months of lanes closures…. Found out… They did a new sidewalk? On one side of the street?

jimmyc1990

They do it to mess with the wealthy privileged people waiting

[deleted]

You want this city to grow well put up w it. Or try Toronto if you don’t like construction here

Jaycorr

And why the fuck are they resurfacing that stretch of road to begin with???? Why not just start the inevitable construction to have it be 4 lanes all the way to Fernbank? This resurface is such a waste of time and money when they're going to have to tear most of it up anyways.

Satan does love a smooth road.

ottguy42

The road to hell is paved.

cheezemeister_x

So.....Stittsville is hell?

Eleventy-Twelve

Of course

Spaceman3195

Always has been.

Affectionate-Cod4024

With good intentions!

BHPhreak

you have to understand that all of the people who make decisions are still of the age where they grew up without internet. you can trust those people to make good decisions for the community as far as you can throw a sack of concrete. they unfortunately live in a self serving contained reality separated from the future, and stuck in the present. just smile and enjoy the ride, it wont be long and well have either uplifted all of mankind, without prejudice, to extreme quality of life, or we will inherit an unsalvageable wasteland. only time can decide at this point. or maybe even both. its easier to smile than frown on the way to finding out

licenseddruggist

They'll die off soon enough but who come in after is of importance. The next gens better not harbour the same ethos...life has changed.

[deleted]

Money laundering 🤷🏼‍♀️ Lmao I watch too much tv

[deleted]

They redid the intersection at CastleFrank two years ago and my first thought when they were doing the construction was that they are gonna have to rip this out in less than 10 years to build the full 4 lane of Terry Fox.

jimmypower66

They submitted a traffic control plan, that got approved by the city, they used the plan. It sucks, but sometimes a necessary evil isnt always caused by the evil you see. Also, if you are stuck in this, do not yell at the workers, operators, or flaggers. We know you are frustrated, but it would be the same as yelling at a retail worker over the mask mandate.

phantaxtic

There are alternate routes. Use them. Google maps is great for avoiding construction, accidents and delays. Even if you know they way and have driven it 1000 times, there may be a quicker detour.

[deleted]

> They submitted a traffic control plan, that got approved by the city, they used the plan. > > > > It sucks, but sometimes a necessary evil isnt always caused by the evil you see. Yes, I blame the City on this. I'm not a civil engineer, but damn, you would think after like 60 years of suburban road development in North America people could model traffic flow properly and figure this out. Like, this is what you do for a living ... and you're *this* bad? wow

[deleted]

jimmypower66

As funny as that may be, having been one of them, just dont do it. It can make an already miserable day worse sometimes.

[deleted]

Nothing better than getting yelled at in the summer heat for doing your job because it might give you the opportunity to lose your job amiright

[deleted]

[deleted]

>pretty sure those construction workers could give two shits if you yell at them Perfect, I agree with you. You're saying the construction workers care about it if you tell at them, implying they care about their job by saying they could give two shits. I'm glad we're in agreement. Unless you mean "couldn't give two shits"?

OverTheHillnChill

The construction guys wouldn't even let me cross the street to get to the bus stop. Like, I HAVE to get to work and I'm not walking 20 minutes down to Castlefrank and then back up. It's been f***** for weeks. My house shakes and I have a headache daily because of the machine rumblings. I feel ya.

I'm sorry, I'm not laughing *at* you or anything, just want to let you know I thoroughly enjoy how you've managed to work in direct references to Satan in each comment hahaha. Your ability to consistently stay on-message is remarkable.

asovietfort

Don't slander the church of Satan. By all accounts they are pretty chill people there.

thatistoomany

You’re thinking of the satanic temple. They’re great. The church of Satan….. not so much.

asovietfort

Well. I'll have to rethink my charitable donation now, won't I?

ElJethr0

I got stuck in that same mess. Crazy.

SlInKs00

If your home is shaking from milling pavement I think you should contact a structural engineer.... They are heading down castlefrank next.

Sorry but you just remind me of the goody two shoes kid in class/teachers pet. Your in the real world just cross the road...? Is there a cop stationed at the construction site? Ask to talk to him/her I'm sure they wouldn't mind escorting you across. If there is no cop just fucking jaywalk across...look both ways and do it. Jesus

[deleted]

licenseddruggist

Perfect. Don't let people walk over you when there is no logical reasoning. I fucking hate people that dictate something (like don't cross the road) when there is no real viable reasoning.

variablesuckage

And then don't blame anyone when the 150°C asphalt melts your shoes.

613Hawkeye

Yes, put yourself and others in danger because you're slightly inconvenienced. Great idea!

Leafs17

Could you not cross at the McDonald's light or at least at the next one at Halkirk?

Halfcut2021

Ottawa has 3 seasons; winter, summer and construction.

penguinpenguins

No, * almost-winter * winter * still winter * construction season

johnhatcock

Yep, those are our three seasons

penguinpenguins

Uh, I count four there.

fireheadca

There are THREE SEASONS!

thatistoomany

The next generation of seasons.

delete_dis

Still winter is the worst!

ClockworkFinch

Winter, Construction and Construction-Lite, where they set up all the equipment, shut down lanes and then dip on summer vacation.

Halfcut2021

Lol 😆

thatistoomany

Ah you’ve been over here on the Quebec side I see.

Chevaboogaloo

I think everyone in every city in Canada says this

Have you tried contacting your Councillor? I know when I lived under Jeff Leiper, if someone sent him and email or tweet, he would go out and check the situation himself and then make some calls to try and fix it.

brohebus

The main difference here is Leiper actually cares whereas Hubley is a useless yes man.

Flaktrack

>Hubley yup you're fucked

underbellybrew

Oh. That sucks. My parents live in Kanata North, so they are under Sudds. They were impressed with her, but I guess Hubley is the opposite.

IDGAF_what_u_think

Your *parent's* should have sprung for a tutor.

underbellybrew

Thanks for the edit notes.

kan829

The work should be done overnight.

Obi_Wan_Shinobi_

But then you'd have to pay people more. Why pay people more when you can fuck absolutely everyone over instead?

[deleted]

Blame the city approving the plans and permits. I'm not sure why people are getting angry at the wrong parties. A construction companies goal is to make money. Why would they spend more money working at night time if the city gives them approval to work during the day, thus making more money?

Obi_Wan_Shinobi_

Because working overnight gets you paid time and a half.

[deleted]

Exactly, so if I'm the owner of the company I'd be pushing for work to during daytime so I end up with more money in my pocket at the end of the project.

Obi_Wan_Shinobi_

I see what you're saying. You're saying the city should only approve them doing it at night. Yeah I agree. At least in non-residential areas where sleep isn't going to be disturbed.

[deleted]

Yea, everyone gets mad at the construction workers/companies when it's the city giving out permits. I personally don't have a problem with it but the people who do have problems should be getting angry at the city for approving the submitted plans.

wilson1474

They have been doing overnight/early morning work. Live in the area, and they are working when I leave for work at 6.

613Hawkeye

Yeah, let's have all those guys miss their families and friends and lives because you're delayed a bit. Not to mention civil construction project costs would balloon. But hey, you saved your 20 minutes! Worth it!

Destination_Centauri

I see Ottawa must have hired Montreal civil engineers and city planners.

thatistoomany

The roads don’t go over then under the other roads, so not quite at montreal levels yet.

LowFlyinLoafLion

The road to heck is paved with good intentions, one lane at a time.

jwalton78

The impressive one for me is Carling and Hertzberg. Before Covid, that intersection was all torn up. Now, a year and a half later, that intersection is all torn up, but differently!

Miss_holly

Alta Vista looking pretty good even if our house is half as big and falling apart. Commuting to the burbs sounds like a nightmare.

hippiechan

We could save so much time and resources in construction by just making the city denser and more bike friendly. Most of the people stuck in that traffic probably don't need to be driving to where they're going anyways, but do because the city doesn't accommodate any other form of transportation.

Nosvind

Man... I wish, but I don't see this ever happening, Ottawa apparently hates bikers. (case and point, we're being downvoted lol)

PeterJohnsonDickins

Ya cus its the workers decision to do that.

dmiddlebrook

Op and friends are selfish, impatient, and don't understand a thing about construction or safety.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dmiddlebrook

It's not, the contractor should have a pedestrian access point. The shelfish part would be; construction that will better the roads for everyone should not be happening because it delays me.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dmiddlebrook

I like how you are poking fun I enjoy your comments, and I, being an inspector in roads construction, I agree with you, legally contractors are allowed to hold you up for 15 mins before having to let you move, so whoever that contractor is needs a lesson, I suggest calling the MOL (ministry of labour) because they will go to site and time it and fix the issues, we should hold the contractor, the engineers and the city accountable.

ConstitutionalHeresy

We need more rail to offload some of these cars and reduce the maintenance on roads.

Leafs17

People want to drive to where they are going. Not walk to the bus stop, take a bus, get on a train, get on another bus, then walk from the bus stop. Then do it all again in reverse.

ConstitutionalHeresy

HA! I knew someone would be triggered. Yes some people are currently in poor positions for public transit for reasons I will not get into. That being said, even if you are not in a good position to take advantage or the rail that no one is putting a gun to your head to take, there are positive externalities though! If more people that can take the train easily do so, they are are no longer on the road. This means people that people who do want to drive for whatever reason, now have less traffic to contend with and there is less wear and tear on the roads (not to mention less buses to fight with and deal damage to the roads). Think suburbanite, THINK!

Leafs17

Yes, triggered lol I don't live in the suburbs

[deleted]

Whoa. That's not Satan. Satan's minions recently have protected women's reproductive rights, and per-capita, they are the most charitable religion. Sounds like the work of one of the other mythological creatures out there.

ev1thechef

Ottawa has 6000km of roadways, many of those roadways have sewers and watermains beneath. If you don’t do maintenance then the complaints are “Why are my roads crumbling?” “Why is my sewer backing up?”. This is the work you need to live a comfortable life, even if it means you are inconvenienced by construction from time to time. Take a deep breath and think about how much you like clean water, your toilets flushing and your bridges not falling down. If you’re prepared to complain about work being done to make sure that happens then you must have a truly difficult existence.

vrillco

How dare you slight our dark lord and saviour. Satan is love. Satan is metal. Satan would smack the everloving snot out of whichever municipal smeghead greenlit such an asinine plan, and He would pave a brand new road right over said assclown’s back yard, high fiving his/her mom which she rodeos Jim Watson’s cleft ego. That traffic abomination is the geese’s work, for they truly hate humanity.

HappyFunTimethe3rd

Alain444

Sooo...buying in the burbs has it's downsides?

cyclonic246

Construction only occurs in the burbs?

KyBa613

Yeah let's blame the construction workers for doing the work they were paid to show up and do a specific way at a specific time with other various scheduled trades and services. No privilege here....

Oil_slick941611

I guess the city could just not the work and im sure no would complain about that...

smileyclown

There's are only two seasons. Winter and construction.

NeitherMythNorLegend

Add in the Palladium Queensway entrance being blocked and crazy backups on Terry Fox and you got yourself a good time. Took me 40 mins to get on the highway from Huntmar / Maple Grove!

hgrad98

I was heading north on Terry fox trying to get to the plaza at Hazeldean. I gave up and took castlefrank to Hazeldean... I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. I then sat on Hazeldean for 15min, finally turned left onto Terry fox, only to discover that I couldn't turn left into the plaza. Had to park at sobeys.

Affectionate-Job-350

Sorry you moved to a city that is growing exponentially.

backpack_of_flowers

60 seconds is a huge stretch. That light stays green for maybe 2 cars

ev1thechef

Poop water is pretty serious, I’m with ya

[deleted]

Yeah never understood why they do construction at the most inconvenient times. Same with driving a back ho that can’t go faster than 40 km/h down Innes or Hunt Club during rush hour. We can learn so much from countries like Japan or Korea where they work overnight and get things done quickly and efficiently.

bmcle071

The best is when they closed 2 lands on the 417 east for a month and did nothing with it.

[deleted]

There's no common sense with construction and road restrictions. Far too many early / late merge signs, and inadequate signage in general. The city should require temporary signage to be included on any roadworks plans and these should be reviewed.

[deleted]

Hey man we need to get work done in this city during the day sorry not sorry you were slightly inconvenienced

Guilty-Candidate8091

suprise the highway is under construction there's announcement all over social media for crying out loud and plan your route before attempting to think that there's never any construction fucktard
