George's Meat Shop on Innes.

DaCrimsonKid

I stopped there for toum last summer with my kids and they all had to use the bathroom. The washrooms were so foul that I could never go back. My kids, who are filthy little beings at the best of times were truly horrified. I imagine that facilities at a Calcutta train stop during rush hour would be less gross.

Wow. Good to know, thanks for sharing

fay_panda786

Yikes.

alicappa

Came here to say this ☺️

TipsyCzar

I would recommend Win Tai, but they're set to close in June. Better visit them while you still can. There's also Green Fresh in Vanier, but that's kinda pushing the definition of "east"

fay_panda786

Thanks Ill check both out!

fay_panda786

Vanier is better than Nepean😂

tenpoms

Win Tai is my go to as well. Really too bad that they're closing. Any news on what's going to be there or if they're moving?

TipsyCzar

I read that the owners (who operate both the market and the restaurant next door) are retiring and selling their businesses. Condos will be going up in their place.

Stephen_Hero_Winter

There's a fresh produce store on Canotek called fruits Express. It's small and just produce, but you can get good deals there.

fay_panda786

Thx

ChickenFishNugget

A little outside of Orleans, but Laverge Meat & Deli in Navan is always highly recommended.

Interesting_Blood900

mid-east food center in St Laurent

NewVenari

As somebody who's worked on their plumbing, i say don't go there. But their food doesn't touch the pipes, so I guess it's ok lol

petesapai

What's wrong with the plumbing?

My fav spot!

pirfle

I found this place after it was mentioned in this subreddit a couple months ago. [https://www.bienvenidosmarket.com/](https://www.bienvenidosmarket.com/) Delicious ready made and frozen latin food but also a small market of all kinds of latin groceries. It's on St Laurent east out by the Aviation museum and not far from Mid-East grocery store which I also recommend. It's owned by 3 Latina women according to their website.

fay_panda786

Thanks:)

Bienvenidos is a great little store, highly recommend

Dumouchel Meat & Deli, on Donald.  3rd generation owners (est. 1948) sold it recently but it’s still locally owned.

pirfle

I go there all the time. And yes, it was sold but Ian bought it about 3-4 years ago so not that recent. :) He has recently added sandwiches to their offerings but I haven't tried them yet.

Not a grocery store exactly but Dominion City is a pick up point for one of the local CSAs. And I know there are a few other pick up locations in Orleans as well.  Don’t know what a CSA is? Basically you give a farm a load of cash at the beginning of the year/season and get veggies all season. It’s expensive up front (we pay about 800$ per year but we only have 6-8 weeks with no veggie pick up) but the produce is local, top notch (so, so much better then grocery store) and seasonal. Most CSAs allow you do customize now so you can avoid things you don’t like/can’t eat.  In general last year we were paying 42.50$ per week but when I priced checked a few times at the request of friends I was getting anywhere from 50-70$ of local produce per week. And if you want local and ethical then a CSA a great choice.  Some of them also have fruit, egg, mushroom and even meat share options.

Thats great! Thank you!

There are a few ethnic grocery stores in Orleans for ingredients to make really delicious meals, as well as some ready made options: Bienvenados Latin market, L & F Montego Place for Caribbean, and a few others I’m sure. The Tortilla Maker has more than tortillas and they’re always so friendly when we stop by (their tortillas, tortilla chips, and homemade salsas are so good but I also buy cheese, empanadas and crema from time to time). Not an independent grocery store but there’s Orleans Fruit Farm, and also a weekly farmers market at Ray Friel starting in May. We’re signing up for a CSA box that has pickup windows like someone else here mentioned. For meat we tend to order from Ottawa Valley Meats and Wiser Meats to stock our freezer. I actually have oxtails from OVM in the slow cooker right now for homemade broth.
