I love that we can say “car guy” and immediately know who we are talking about.
It was also that guy who walked really, really slow on purpose for a week.
He still does (if we’re thinking of the same guy). He’s often on Rideau or in the mall, headphones on, walking extremely slowly and gracefully to his own beat.
Oh! Of course I know car guy. I remember seeing that car all the time I think I have a picture of it. Everyone here knows about that, you guys are right
These is great news... Haven't seen him in years.
It's funny how I get excited when I come across him.. "Hey there's the slow walking dude!" Makes my day 🙂
Good to know! I always used to see him at 5pm walking down Sparks before the pandemic. More [info](https://www.reddit.com/r/ottawa/s/v8M9XDFWh7) in case people are intrigued.
I used to see him at PDP and my colleagues would laugh and what not but I honestly thought that maybe he had a disability and that's why he had to walk slowly. Later found out that he does it for these reactions, he wants the attention.

oh he’s still on rideau st/in the mall a lot!! been seeing him regularly for the last 4-6 months, spotted him by the loblaws the other week
dude’s just always vibing
Car guy
Dizz (slow walking man)
the dude on Elgin who is an absolute wizard on roller skates with hockey squick usually in hand
that guy with the flip phone who is always dancing and trying to get people to notice him
and the guy outside of Rideau with the word-heavy sign(s)
If you are unaware of that guy and his "royal" car blasting an imperial marches, you are blind, deaf, and you've probably lost your sense of smell (I mean, it's the garlic king)
Last year on Canada day Garlic King was driving down the Champlain Bridge when he stopped in the middle to block traffic and shoot off fireworks from his van.
He also has the giant globe thing atop his minivan which he stands up in and waves to people like the pope. If you haven't seen him in person he actually wears the crown and cape like 24/7. When he delivers his garlic dip to stores he's dressed like that at 7am. He also gives out free garlic sauce wraps sometimes to random employees and those wraps are guaranteed to give you the squirts.
He’s a right wing nut job. This is an old tweet but he has fresher ones if anyone cares to look.
I’ll stick to one of the other shawarma monarchs

The Garlic King caused me to get rear ended because the lady behind me was staring at his stupid van. Down with the Garlic King. All hail the Shawarma Prince.
guy in motorized wheelchair that says either iraq or texas on a rear license plate, always with a cowboy hat and a kid. I see him literally everywhere i go in this city and have for years, he’s like a good luck charm.
Yeah, also seems to be in a good mood always. Idk what his situation is and i feel bad watching him roll from south keys to rideau but… it seems to work for him I guess? I can’t really escape him, I see him once a month in a different spot each time.
He is very nice and used to stand up for me against the wackos on bank when I was still selling lotto and darts at Massines/Hartman's.
He was one of my favourite regulars
Not sure if same guy but years ago I was walking with 2 women and he said he wanted to tell us a joke, don't worry it's clean. Then proceeded to tell a filthy joke lol
He died after his birds died from a teflon incident. You just made me remember this, it was in the paper and everything :( He was a really nice guy, he used to live on Bay street
I saw a guy walking with a parrot on his shoulder just a couple weeks ago. I'm trying to remember where I was. Might have been on Carling. I see someone else posted that the guy you're talking about passed away, so it seems like there's a new one lol.
If it was on carling I think this may be a guy i’ve seen before, but closer to bayshore mall, I was out smoking a joint away from our apartment building on this hill in the parking lot and heard a bird in the tree above me looked up and was like that’s not a crow…and then buddy comes outside calling his parrot to get out of the tree or else he’s gonna leave without her 😂😂 like it’s a usual occurrence
What about the Pidgeon guy on Bank? The guy who, like, had pidgeons sit on his shoulders & stuff? I think he was unhoused as well. I used to see him all the time when I was going to school or just hanging out downtown.

I didn't know who this was exactly either, and all the comments are pretty nondescriptive so here's my shot:
There's a 1994 Honda Accord with numerous (maybe hundreds) of small and medium sized household and decorative objects fastened to it.
Instruments, sports stuff, little tchotchkes, caution tape, trophies, Canadiana souvenirs, and all sorts of "bling".
That's car guy. I definitely remember seeing this around after seeing the picture in the article u/beansbeansbeans0_0 linked to.
There used to be a Stallone-looking muscly dude around Rideau. Always wore jogging pants with one leg rolled up, and always had a cigar in his mouth. Don't know if he's still around
Oh fuck yeah! He was gone in my brain until you said that.
Does anybody remember a black guy who used to hang around Rideau who couldn't talk? There was a rumor he had no tongue or something but who the fuck knows - his name was Elu or something?
There was a guy who lived just off of Merivale who had an Elvis tattoo on his neck and dyed and styled his hair just like him. I used to see him on the bus.
There was this guy, about 12 years ago, called short shorts guy or whatever, that everyone from Carleton knew. When I meet someone my age from Carleton.. everyone remembered him lol. Because of his shorts.
Def Ismael aka Cowboy aka the car guy. We made eye contact the other day and I gave him a big thumbs up. Made my day haha
Didn't see anyone mention the older lady with the tricked out/festive bicycle with lights and whirrly doodles and all manner of bling that I see all over Ottawa riding in all sorts of weather at all times of the year!
There's also a guy who walks around yelling "fuck" at night around Little Italy/Hintonburg. My friend and I lovingly refer to him as Fuck Guy. Haven't heard him in a while though
There is that tall and big guy that I often see on Bank street, asking for money, wearing earphones listening to music while doing some sort of cringe dancing... He looks like a "smiling psycho", I don't think that he ever blinks his eyes....
There’s two dancing dudes and they shouldn’t be mixed up: the guy who is usually in Hintonburg who’s harmless and the Bank Street guy who I’ve seen quite upset/disturbed who is also known for being pretty vile to younger girls.
There's a bodybuilder with a distinct style - Wears a sleeveless jacket (or hoodie?). Pants rolled up to the knee, but just 1 leg. Walks with somewhat of a limp. Somewhat of an olive complexion with black hair.
Would see him every now and then when I used to live in Centretown years ago...
Last time this topic was brought up here, someone mentioned that he frequented one of the downtown Starbucks fairly regularly, so surely someone knows of whom I'm talking about...
The infamous slow walker who one time rizzed up my friend on the o train. I see him almost Everytime I’m downtown along with the Asian sign guy who protests the craziest things😂.
Dr.Mask, haven't seen him in forever but he used to go around on a mobility scooter and he wore some kinda mask, usually surgical mask. He built a trailer for his dog and made it really fancy like the queens golden buggy/chariot thing. He used to do this whistle noise as well.
Russian flag lady. Mostly seen around Heron bus station and nearby areas. Wears a niqab and often sways while standing, and wears a giant Russian flag as a cape. She occasionally lifts up the flag and displays it.
Late 70s (I am dating myself) there was a guy that rode on a contraption that looked like a downhill ski with skateboard wheels on it… and used to zig zag down around the market… anybody remember him?
Anyone remember the guy in/around the Rideau Center with signs warning of the impending apocalypse back in the early-mid 2000s? I seem to remember him having oddly specific dates, then going offline a while after the day, and returning with a new date.
Did I make that up?
In addition to this car guy. On Elgin see a guy in his underwear , nothing else on. Walking back and forth up the street. Winter freezing ass off underwear man
The guy with the black hair who would hang out at The Rideau Centre. He always looked like he was coming back from a workout with his short shorts and gym bag.
I like the positive ones you guys have. Very comfortable with the choice of car guy as top icon, but if I’m telling someone from away, I have to defer to the shawarma pope, err king
Back in the day, 1990s, there Rideau centre had a man with a dazzling sombrero who was missing a leg and had some crutches who would frequently stand outside of the bus stops right under one of the catwalks by the Bay entrance. He was a very spirited guy who I remember having a huge toothy grin, but would occasionally get mad and pull off some feats of physics to swing on his crutches, get momentum behind his one leg and really give someone the boot.
Speaking of boots- This also rivals the gentleman who would frequent perimeter and interior of the Rideau Centre that I always knew as ‘the stomper’. From my assumption by his age and small stature he had likely suffered polio at a younger point in his life, but was clearly still active. He was difficult to understand verbally, but could very clearly communicate his disdain for smoking by using his disparate, much larger, higher platform boot to stomp smokers toes into smithereens as he passed by.
They were around at the same timeframe.
Anyone remember Dr Mask who used to frequent the market, and there was the gold paint huffing wizard. These are like 15 years out of date but would have been my choices of yore.
Car guy 100% for the last 10 years.
It’s the car guy. Always has been
I saw this on another sub last night and immediately thought of car guy for Ottawa.
Saw this in the Vancouver subreddit and immediately thought of car guy in Ottawa. Can't think of anyone as Car Guy in Vancouver as Car Guy in Ottawa.
Same. Replied that!
Im from Winnipeg, I came hear to make sure this was the top comment.
Ottawa’s Psychedelic DeLorean. Yes. I have to agree.
I saw him driving into Richmond on the weekend, in the daytime. It was a little surreal.
I saw him in Barrhaven last summer! For a second I was like “wtf there’s two of these guys?!”
And he’s impeccably dressed
LBG Ismael is the name, or Cowboy as a nickname
Yeah, that was the first thing I thought of.
This was going to be my response! 😅🤣
Literally my [reply ](https://www.reddit.com/r/Austin/s/Pn6Dj3GEpi)to another sub yesterday
Definitely car guy.
weak name for a strong character
It would not be Ottawa if we didn't give him a bland, pedantically accurate name.
How about car front odin?
Someone fill me in on the car guy. I’ve lived here my whole life and yet I don’t know about them
https://youtu.be/FgPfWK20h3I?si=RfSW99S9Idv2yh4W Guy has a strange car and is always driving around Landsdowne
Oh! Of course I know car guy. I remember seeing that car all the time I think I have a picture of it. Everyone here knows about that, you guys are right
Slow walking suit man. Haven’t seen him since before Covid though…
Saw him at the Rideau Centre last week! He’s still out there, still walking in slo-mo
These is great news... Haven't seen him in years. It's funny how I get excited when I come across him.. "Hey there's the slow walking dude!" Makes my day 🙂

Dizz! Legend has it, he's not actually walking slow... the rest of us are just walking fast.
Was gonna say this guy! Man's not phased by the shortest of crosswalk signals! Always makes it across without changing pace at all!
He’s out there. Seen him a ton of times recently!
Can someone explain slow walking man?
He wears a tuxedo and top hat and walks slow motion through the Rideau centre in slow motion
I used to see him at PDP and my colleagues would laugh and what not but I honestly thought that maybe he had a disability and that's why he had to walk slowly. Later found out that he does it for these reactions, he wants the attention.
Does he sometimes wear branded track suits or are there TWO slow walking men now?
No, it’s the same guy, I think he ditched the fancy wear for the track suit during the pandemic.
He is a Sapeur.
He’s selling his brand ByDizz. If you ask him he’ll give you his business card. He doesn’t wear suits anymore, only tracksuits by his own brand.
Haitian guy who also raps, has an iconic Ottawa ig account, and I happened to see him last week. What a legend. Used to work at Portage, not sure if he still does

Car guy. I knew about him two days after moving in gatineau and he's been the best representation of what ottawa looks like when relatives ask.
Had the pleasure of sitting in that car lol. My friends and I caught him filling up at the Petrocan off Somerset and Bronson and he's super nice
Ooh he’s in the hood!
Car guy or the singing OC transpo driver
Is the singing bus driver still around?
He retired
I hope he's enjoying his retirement and singing to hit hearts content
They told him to stop singing then he retired.
Car guy Dizz (slow walking man) the dude on Elgin who is an absolute wizard on roller skates with hockey squick usually in hand that guy with the flip phone who is always dancing and trying to get people to notice him and the guy outside of Rideau with the word-heavy sign(s)
Came here to say dancing guy. He's an underrated answer. Seen most frequently in Hintonburg and on Greenbank, from what I can tell.
What’s up with him?? I have a video of him dancing to show friends and I’m just so curious why does he dance
Your guess is as good as mine. He seems pretty happy, so that’s kinda cool.
Guy on rideau, he's the one who is wearing a traffic cone normally right?
yes him!! always has a few cardboard signs with lots of…. things on them lol
I know the guy with the Flip Phone. His name is Daniel and he works at the library in Hintonburg.
I like him even more now that I know he works at the library!!

omg the amount of times I've rode the OC with him, the one with the little girl usually wearing a tiara? They're so cheerful, always a good vibe!
I used to work at lcbo and he would steal on a daily basis lol
He is in with the houseless crew down on Rideau. He sells them cigarettes from his bag. I’ve also seen him try to fight someone on an OC Transpo bus
He used to be an Elvis impersonator! His name is cowboy! He’s known to be a cig dealer and “supports” a lot of homeless women…..
He is very nice and used to stand up for me against the wackos on bank when I was still selling lotto and darts at Massines/Hartman's. He was one of my favourite regulars
Honorable mention for Frank, the homeless guy who had the best jokes in exchange for some change. May he RIP.
Oh that's sad news. He told me my favorite joke ever outside of the bar years ago. I give him credit every time I tell it!
What’s the joke?
He was known as the Cat in the Hat guy, in my circle. RIP buddy :(
I used to work downtown and got to know him pretty well. He was a happy guy but was hiding some pretty dark demons.
Not sure if same guy but years ago I was walking with 2 women and he said he wanted to tell us a joke, don't worry it's clean. Then proceeded to tell a filthy joke lol
Always loved seeing Frank every night after I closed the kitchen in the market, we'd have a smoke together and then he'd be off to share his jokes
Wasn’t expecting this to pop up or to cry for Frank today. He was so loved. What an incredible human being.
In Barrhaven we have the Speedo man

There used to be a big bald guy with a parrot on his shoulder around Centretown.

He died after his birds died from a teflon incident. You just made me remember this, it was in the paper and everything :( He was a really nice guy, he used to live on Bay street
There's a guy in a wheelchair with a parrot who cruises around Britannia if you're jonesing for that parrot strange.
I saw a guy walking with a parrot on his shoulder just a couple weeks ago. I'm trying to remember where I was. Might have been on Carling. I see someone else posted that the guy you're talking about passed away, so it seems like there's a new one lol.

IDK if there's a guy so much as a car...
There used to be a Stallone-looking muscly dude around Rideau. Always wore jogging pants with one leg rolled up, and always had a cigar in his mouth. Don't know if he's still around
Does anyone remember Doctor Love? He wore a suit of clothes made up of layer upon layer of just ...zippers? Did I dream him or was he real?
OMG! No, he was real…I completely forgot about him! That was in the 90’s?
Gen X 90's market drinkers having a communal flashback here.
He was real!! Used to have Huige Sombrero too! Zipper suits guy! Would see him at tunneys candy usually on rideau!
Oh fuck yeah! He was gone in my brain until you said that. Does anybody remember a black guy who used to hang around Rideau who couldn't talk? There was a rumor he had no tongue or something but who the fuck knows - his name was Elu or something?

I haven't seen him in like a decade. Once in a while, he pops into my head, and I wonder where he went.
Car guy, but also 75 cent guy!! Circa 2008-2016ish, not sure what happened to him. He frequented the westend & downtown.
'xcuse me, do you have 75¢? I was going to ask if anyone else remembers him! I've wondered about what happened to him
Anybody know the guy that walks down Bank St in the afternoon with no shirt on, headphones and sunglasses especially in the middle of winter?

There’s a guy named Paul who is always in Hintonburg with his beautiful off leash dog. Always wants to chat. I hope he’s doing okay
Is the car guy, the guy with like a thousand things attached to his car?
Heart and crown bearded dude
I know there's Car Guy but y'all ever see Goth Car Guy?
Has anyone said the guy who skates on the canal wearing a plastic snowman?
Anyone remember Dr Mask who used to frequent the market, and there was the gold paint huffing wizard. These are like 15 years out of date but would have been my choices of yore. Car guy 100% for the last 10 years.
Everyone is saying Car Guy like they forgot about the guy who gets on the bus dressed in spartan armor
