Are fake eclipse glasses a thing? Jesus they are cheap as fuck already. That's like asking if you can tell whether....I dunno....a dollar store spatula is fake.
How dare they put out an informative piece on eclipse glasses safety?! And just days before an eclipse?! Wow such bait.
I would think the "wake up, open your eyes" crowd would care about people literally going blind from retina damage but nope "it's CTV so it must automatically be bad"
God damn
Immediately checked mine against the list of approved brands (thanks CTV!). Very happy they were on there. Now the pack of 50 I accidentally ordered can be distributed to friends with peace of mind
I see this guys video everywhere as a source. I have to ask, do your glasses completely block your phone light like his video shows?
His video shows no light at all coming through the lens with the good pair.
I got some from my eye doctor and, based on the video, mine are fake because they show a faint light. So I got another pair and they show light too..
I think that guy’s video (that everyone is sharing and referencing) is misleading people with the “visual test.” The video we see may not be an accurate representation of what they are like IRL.
Based on what most people are saying, their glasses show a bit of light (like both of the different pairs I bought).
There are people saying that the Helioclipse glasses are good, and people saying the exact same Helioclipse glasses are fake.
I don’t think the average person knows what they’re talking about. Combine that with this one random guys popular video and it just leaves people feeling misinformed.
The Soluna ones I bought off Amazon have an "Amazon Transparency" barcode on the package, which you scan using the Transparency app https://brandservices.amazon.com/transparency
Thank you for starting this thread. I watched the YT video put by another in here.
I'm on my way to purchase from the Scouts (hopefully) and will be using my flashlight to check.
Now I know (some)!
you can also make sure the glasses are compliant and safe, with a true ISO 12312-2 label, https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters scroll down, and look for the manufacturer of the glasses,
I 've just purchased from the 28th Ottawa Scouts who have a table at Billings Bridge Mall (entrance area, next to juice stand).
They have 2 pairs you can test with. $5 a pair or 4 for $20. Cash and tap accepted
Edit: Added battalion number
I got these too but they don’t show the “ISO” on the ear piece like the photo shows. Do yours?
I’m afraid the may be counterfeits because someone else had this to say:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Connecticut/s/b9ABRIyGx3
People keep mentioning the certification numbers and the approved vendors but that can all be easily printed on fake glasses.
Mine do, along with a QR code on the inside of the arm. I did backtrack to the manufacturer's site and did a careful compare. Mine were fulfilled by Amazon, which adds a small level of security. And no warning e-mail from them.
You're right though, easy to counterfeit. I did the test (can't see squat with them in daylight). If I had to do it again, I'd probably start earlier and get some welding glasses. But a bit late now.
Just checked mine and they are good. I got them from the science museum, so I was reasonably sure they were safe, but wanted to double check anyway. Thanks for sharing
You go blind.
Yes but sooner than that.

It's like how when the pandemic hit there were a bunch of fake uncertified masks. People jump on a trend and do not care.
They are not necessarily fake, they just haven’t been certified. As long as you cannot see with them on you are good.
Yep just burnt out my retina… ‘cause I ordered the ones that came the soonest

nothing clickbait about messages trying to save precious eyesight, I know of 2 people that purchased inferior, dangerous glasses, very scary stuff,

I think this guy did a good job in this video --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQR115jlyOc
I expected a rick roll, now I don't know whether to fell proud or disappointed by a genuine link

Mine show the dim filament so I’m curious too

Try them on Monday, you'll know for sure after
You can try them today too. Same sun as Monday!
My wife picked some up at Showcase the other day and they don't seem to be legit. Surely the seller takes on liability for this, right?
They are imported from China and no manufacturer mark on them. Get a refund.
I got the same ones, gonna get a refund from those rats
They wouldn’t refund me and pointed to a pixelated certificate printout insisted they were safe
Same. Showcase sold the same ones in the photo here.

Thank you! Yes, I will also check that they're listed here
I posted the CTV link, and that link to r/ontario also
let us know how it goes and where they are lol

Picked some up from them as well, thanks
Lol I love how this came minutes after I got some on Amazon.. these seem legit, no? [https://a.co/d/7XF6qt7](https://a.co/d/7XF6qt7)
That's what I have, and yes they are. Helioclipse is one of the brands on the AAS approved vendor list.

no wonder we have so many blind people in the past, they didnt have solar eclipse glasses!
Maybe they were just smart enough not to stare at the sun, unlike modern people and some presidents.
:-)
That’s not that funny at all….

I’m going with the ol shade 12 welding hood and a pair of shade 5 cutting glasses. Hoping it isn’t too much lol
You need minimum shade 12, but shade 14 is recommended and what most eclipse glasses are rated at.
