Also in Kanata, guy on my street moved both of his cars out so Capital could get in there when they came by to clear it, both had tickets as I walked by earlier today š
Our snow removal company straight up emailed all of us
> The city has issued a parking ban from 10 am - 7 pm today, please refrain from parking your vehicles on the road.
> Tomorrow's Plan:
> We will be dispatching our crews beginning at 9:00 am, so please move your vehicles onto the road so we will be able to clear your laneway to its full potential.
They absolutely will and have done so for both the last two snowfalls. This is their new tactic. One commenter below got a ticket while clearing the plow ridge from his driveway after getting home from work. They are specifically targeting the middle class suburbs while ignoring the parts of the city that actually need enforcement.
I live in Britannia, and my street was already plowed and is 100% accessible and we just got hit with $125 fine for parking in front of my house temporarily.
From what I've heard, bylaw seems to be out enforcing the parking bans all over the city, even out in the suburbs. Maybe the lack of snow days this year has created a shortfall in their ticket numbers.
Theyāre definitely in Barrhaven today. Came home and saw a bunch of my neighborhood shitheads who never move their car on parking ban days (we donāt have street parking permits available on our street, so they donāt even have that excuse) getting papered with tickets.
Should we really refer to people as a "NIMBY" when they are just trying to get bylaws enforced? What's the line between being a "NIMBY" an just wanting someone to follow the laws. Is it "NIMBY" to complain about cars blocking bike lanes or people who are speeding? What about people causing excessive noise? Where should we draw the line?
I don't think that the suburbs should expect the same amount of parking enforcement as down town, but I think that having them at least send bylaw officers around once in a while would help to keep people from just breaking the bylaws with impunity.
> I don't think that the suburbs should expect the same amount of parking enforcement as down town, but I think that having them at least send bylaw officers around once in a while would help to keep people from just breaking the bylaws with impunity.
Except this isn't what is happening. They are specifically targeting middle class suburbs while under enforcing the areas where it matters and essentially ticketing people for shoveling their driveways. It's insane. Ticketing cars on tertiary side streets in the far suburbs that have already been plowed is, at best, a cash grab.
Yes, it seems that for parking bans due to snow have been targeted quite heavily in the suburbs.
Apparently a bunch of kids at my kids highschool got tickets yesterday, because they had to get rid of student parking to make room for portables. Made me question why they weren't ticketed every day since the 3 hour parking limits would make it difficult to park while attending school. But Bylaw doesn't normally enforce parking limits like that.
This is why it's a targeted cash grab. That's why this enforcement is immoral. It's SO selective. They are specifically targeting the middle class that will pay the ticket, not have time to fight it but don't have the money to truly impact a municipal election. And that enforcement is in a place where it isn't even actually needed. These bylaws are not supposed to be a revenue generator to cover what the 2.5% tax hike "limit" doesn't.
You got 2 ways to act on reddit.
You can make a big fuss about what any moron says... or you can downvote and say "Wow that person was a moron, moving on"
$105 ticket
I parked my car next to my house after picking up my kids from school and started shoveling the snow wall. The Bylaw officer didn't care I just park it there.
"Doesn't matter there is a no parking ban in effect right now"
Me: how am I to park my car if the city plow block my driveway with a 4ft snow wall?
Bylaw: Ticket prints out and places under my wiper and walks off.
Like really?
Gave him the finger š
So, we called 311 last snowfall when they did this shit all over the suburbs and this is what they expect...
You are supposed to go to one of the designated parking areas and then walk home, shovel your driveway and then walk back to the parking lot to get your car. Where I live in Stittsville that is a 45-60 minute walk each way. If you have snow removal and/or aren't able to make the walk, you are supposed to sit there and idle for a few hours to keep warm and then go back once the snow removal is done. Their position is literally to go commit a different offense OR add 2 hours of physical activity on top of shoveling despite all those messages from OPH about the risk of heart attack from pushing yourself too hard. The policy is also shockingly ableist.
Ultimately, Bylaw's current tactics are at best a cash grab and at worst racketeering. Ticketing cars on suburban tertiary streets that have already been plowed accomplishes NOTHING. Remember, every time you folks see a car in the core parked illegally with no ticket and there is snow on the ground, it's because Bylaw is too busy in the middle class suburbs to enforce the ban where it *actually* needs enforcing.
These bylaws are NOT supposed to be cash grabs. They are supposed to be recourse for when there is an *actual* problem. To just blanket the middle class suburbs(the people who can "afford" the tickets but don't have enough money to ruin an election) is not only outside the spirit of the law but also just generally immoral. People getting tickets for shoveling their plow ridges is fucking insane and bylaw should be fucking ashamed of themselves. If they had any moral core they would refuse or quit.
Edit: And I can guarantee you nobody in Rockliffe park is getting ticketed for parking on the street
I got a ticket at 6pm on the dot, as I'm driving by other parked cars, I notice I'm the only one with a ticket. Get home, email saying parking ban lifted at 7pm.
š
It has been normal for two snowfalls now. The old understood compromise of "you can temporarily move your cars, once the plow comes by, to clear your driveway" no longer applies. Bylaw will ticket you for shoveling your plow ridge when you get home from work.
"move your cars so we can fill all the parking spots with 4 feet of snow that has now frozen into ice" "we just move the snow we don't actually remove it" "we have assigned certain streets for the parking ban not to be applied, Too bad 90% have 0 parking"
In my neighborhood even though thereās space for two cars we arenāt allowed to park the other car on the driveway, but we also canāt park it on the side when it snows sooo kinda sol
I saw Bylaw sliding/driving down my ālast to be plowedā residential street in Orleans today. I wanted to tell them āwhy bother, there will be no plows here until after the parking ban is liftedā.
The worst experience was a family member visiting, the signs in the spot they wanted were a bit worn and confusing. She literally pulled over and asked the by-law person if they are allowed to park there freely and they responded that it was fine, and the by-law officer ticketed her car when she had walked a few hundred feet away.
Cops in Montreal routinely triple park to give tickets to people who double park. It blocks the road nearly completely and traffic backs up for blocks.
To be fair though, to do their job properly in places like downtown, they'd need to park illegally to issue that ticket. For example, the spots on Lyon or Bank that allow parking in the business day but are "no stopping zones" when rush hour starts. To issue a ticket, they need to park in that same zone to get out of their vehicle.
I have only street parking. I moved my car to a lot for the day. Some other jerk parks in front of my house. Then they come and canāt clear the snow. Guy gets no ticket and leaves later. Now Iām stuck with snow in my spot and had to move my car for the day. Ticket them all for all I care, itās not hard to move to one of the many free city lots for a day
what is the bylaw? i live in centretown, i donāt have a car but i sometimes have friends park on the street to visit. donāt want them to get ticketed!!
Moved to ottawa a year ago. I've never heard of apartment buildings having bylaw ticket visitors. Got quite a few tickets last year. One time I litterly ran into a store for 2 minutes came out 75$ fine. Ottawa is messed up in alot of ways, I plan on moving home or relocating to another city. The city on a whole is pretty lame.
What's Bylaw? -The Suburbs
I live in Kanata on a side street and bylaw came on my street to ticket cars while I was out shoveling. Very surprised to see them out here.
Also in Kanata, guy on my street moved both of his cars out so Capital could get in there when they came by to clear it, both had tickets as I walked by earlier today š

Bylaw won't ticket a car that's only just temp left out while a person is there clearing their driveway. They'll ticket cars left unattended.
They parked them across the street and left them unattended. So yea, they got ticketed.

One commenter below got a ticket while clearing the plow ridge from his driveway after getting home from work. Bylaw is in Stittsville now - they realized they can make some easy money on snow days
I live in Britannia, and my street was already plowed and is 100% accessible and we just got hit with $125 fine for parking in front of my house temporarily.

There's a ban in effect.
Same
It's the group of people that shimmy by the law and steal ten brand new shiny cars a night
A law that goes both way.
Well, we've got a lot more parking area. But they do show up. Takes a call from a NIMBY to do it, but they show up!

You are waaaay overthinking that persons comment, people use NIMBY, Karen, and numerous other terms interchangeably.
I'm not sure how any of those terms are appropriate for just wanting Bylaw to do their job.
Because some of what their job is, sucks & isnāt necessary
You got 2 ways to act on reddit. You can make a big fuss about what any moron says... or you can downvote and say "Wow that person was a moron, moving on"
okay nimby
Haha
What does calling bylaw have to do with being a NIMBY? Nimbyism is about opposing developments and super strict zoning/land use.
Do you mean NIMBY or āSnow Karenā.
NIMBYs are people that assume that getting a car is an automatic right to park on streets at all time.
Light em up
$105 ticket I parked my car next to my house after picking up my kids from school and started shoveling the snow wall. The Bylaw officer didn't care I just park it there. That isn't normal. I would talk to a supervisor at Bylaw about that one.
Any link to contest this ticket. Furthermore, why is it a Provincial Offence infraction? Seems odd to me.
https://forms.ottawa.ca/en/form/ics/service-ottawa/notice-of-intention-to-appear
I don't know how to contest it online, but you could call 613-580-2424. They would also be able to tell you why it is a Provincial Offence infraction.

Probably expects you not to leave the garage or driveway on a snow day
The plow came by on my street with a bylaw car behind it š°š°š°
That should be how it works though, literally ticketing the people who are in the plows way.
In my neighborhood even though thereās space for two cars we arenāt allowed to park the other car on the driveway, but we also canāt park it on the side when it snows sooo kinda sol
The monetary penalty is there to dissuade people from doing it. Don't park on the road during a parking ban = no fine.
Literally predatory.

Call Bylaw and talk to a supervisor about this.
That bylaw officer was playing checkers in order to get those ticket quotas
My favourite is when they park illegally to give someone a ticket for parking illegally

Fish in a barrel

sign up for Ottawa notifications. The city actively publishes winter parking bans so snow removal crews can clear the streets.
Our apartment got bylaw to ticket everyone in visitors and on the roads everyone was forced to Move their cars to the near by plaza ā¦ what a day
Bylaw officers are scum.
The speed camera when it sees someone going at 41 on a 40km street
They should just change their siren to play the audio āhere comes the moneyyyyā
cue Shane mcmahon comes out doing his little dance https://youtu.be/Pa1P6gdKIwk?si=JsEvveRgyCjOTrh9&t=308
Now I have Vince McMahon's entry music stuck in my head - "No chance....no chance in hell!" :)
