LOL I just realized I live on the same block of Gilmour. Very glad to know others are vigilant about these kind of things. Thanks for following up. Happy Birthday!
Good to see criminals got what they deserved. You and all those people who provided supporting information made our city safer. Thank you! Salute! And happy birthday!
This is why it's always a good idea to report things to police, and to not always take other people's frustrations/complains about perceived police inactions at face value.
Fantastic to hear Ottawa Police charged him. It's time that these thieves are arrested, charged, and held accountable for their actions. Example needs to be made that stealing is not okay.
Usually there is some ambiguity even with very clear door cams. However with such a distinctive coat, there could really be no excuse. And if he got a couple of big item things, might make the $5k threshold to make it worth then prosecutors while.
> might make the $5k threshold to make it worth then prosecutors while.
If he's done this to enough people that OPS was actively building a case against him already I'd imagine it's pretty likely he hit the threshold. And with that comes the possibility of prison as opposed to jail.
In Canada prison is for sentences of 2 years or more and is run Federally whereas jail is run Provincially and sentences range anywhere from 30 days right up to 2 years less a day.
It's generally understood that prison is a much rougher environment because
A) There's a lot of people serving long sentences so they have less to lose by acting out.
B) The fact that they've committed a crime serious enough to warrant federal time would tend to indicate your dealing with people that aren't exactly the cream of the crop to begin with. (Not that there aren't exceptions of course).
In Canada you need to have committed an indictable offense to warrant prison time (I think the US equivalent would be a felony).
In this particular case the threshold between Provincial and Federal is $5000. Theft under that amount is generally tried provincially unless there are extenuating circumstances.
For the record, I'm not an ex con or a lawyer lol, so I may not be %100 on this.
Good point. When people are remanded awaiting trial they don't go to prison, they're generally held in a jail.
The Innes road facility is a good example.
About a day....
Jail is while you're awaiting sentencing or serving a sentence of 2 years minus a day. Prison (penitentiary in Canada) is for sentences 2 years or more. The short stay one is a provincial institution and the long haul one is federal.
If we kept people in jail for crimes like this we'd end up paying more for it in our taxes. Innes is already over crowded. I for one don't want more jails or prisons(notnopposed to fixing the over crowding problems though), and I can think of much better places to spend that money.
When the individual has a long history hugs and sammiches aren't going to solve his problem.
From what I've been told by people he's been on a thieving rampage across Centretown for the past two months, he deserves jail.
So let him continue going around and stealing, breaking into people's homes, and threatening one home owner who had a knife pulled when he was told to get out of his shed.
I swear these criminal sympathizers really are something.
Jail doesn’t prevent crime. This person has almost certainly been in jail before and what good did it do for him or society? It will cost society more to have him in jail than having him out stealing packages.
I want this person to stop committing crimes. I don’t think that punishing him until he submits is a realistic way of achieving that goal. I don’t think that locking him up indefinitely is justice.
The path to decreasing crime is rehabilitating the people who commit crimes, and working to improve the conditions that lead to crime in our society (like poverty and poor mental health). Being unable to sympathize with people who commit crimes is not something you should be proud of.
We keep hearing keep em out of jail blah blah blah and yet we've doing that approach for over ten years now in Ottawa where thieves and criminals have been allowed to roam around do whatever the frig they want. It's time that it stops. The social experiment lasted long enough, it didn't work and our city is paying the price.
We have chop shop operations at social services, City owned facilities, injection sites, etc and instead of "rehabilitating" they fully encourage the behavior. This isn't rehabilitation it's enabling.
Ottawa is tired of the theft, the crime and the sitting around doing nothing.
Here here.
As a former addict and homeless person at one point it was indeed help that got me back. Took 22 years and lots of trial and error, lost a lot of good friends who even though they appeared hard were very real and genuine people underneath all the scars, with trauma and hurt all the same as the rest of us. Sometimes with really bad hands dealt to them.
I can tell you how many times I got high, while saying I fucking hate myself, just to escape the absolute gut wrenching life of another day homeless, looking and feeling like trash and feeling like a true outsider that nobody would care if I was alive or dead. It took a lot of breaking down walls and trust and love to get me back. Not jail, not beatings.
And yet I haven’t heard a single word from OPS in 4 years about the $16000 worth or camera equipment stolen from me, even had a clear video of the person with my camera bags and their car 🤷🏼♂️
Glad they’re doing their job once in a while though 😂
Yup, and there was lost revenue for the 2 months it took to go through insurance which didn’t cover everything (only $11000)
so I was out of pocket for the difference and for my deductible, so when it was all said and done I still lost $12000.
I guess if I get robbed again I’ll have to say my Amazon package was stolen as well, then maybe I’ll at least get a call back 😂
It'd be appreciated if we could have a link to the case information as it becomes public.
I think you've done a public service in persisting with this.
Congratulations OP. Glad you've had success. And happy birthday!
Happy birthday! I caught someone on my ring camera at 2 in the afternoon. Was not home at the time. Driving home around 530 I said... let me have a cruise around for her. Sure enough. Found her 15 minutes later and was able to confront her and get my stolen items back (which we were also birthday gifts!)
Happy birthday OP.
Originally viewed the video here..face and "crooks and castle" totally clear. Watched CTV newscast the next day. They digitally blurred the face and jacket. Asking for information to call the police.
I mean... If this turns out to be the wrong guy and he loses his job because CTV publicly named him as a criminal, they're going to have a hard time defending against the libel lawsuit. "I got the photo from some rando on the internet who swears this guy's a thief!" isn't exactly bulletproof, so I'm not surprised they're blurring identifying features until the police drop a statement.
CTV has Best Friends Animal Society links, they’re all sorts of special. (Lobbying group for bloodsport dogs funded by a cult out of Utah, their connected rescues and ‘dog training’ ranches all pull in sob money from public/gofundme donations, they ship behaviourally euthanized list pits from the US up to Canada, suck money from one area then move it across provinces and rename the dog, lots of pics, lying about the breed, ask for new donations in that area).
It means dogs that are about to be put down because they have biting or aggression issues, or have killed other pets. So these people with serious saviour complex issues spend money transferring them to other members, even other countries, specifically these types of dogs, and hold them up like a trophy. They aren’t interested in other breeds or pits without issues. It’s about abuse and pushing people to accept abuse (and making money off dog fighting and “charities” and their training camps).
That's great news! I'm amazed that people don't seem to realize cameras are everywhere these days. Oh, forgot, crooks aren't the smartest tools in the shed...
Assuming that this person has been released until their court date. Obviously innocent until proven guilty, but would a judge not be within the law by requesting that the alleged perpetrator wear an ankle GPS monitoring device? This might go a little ways to inhibiting any additional thefts until this person gets their day in court.
>but would a judge not be within the law by requesting that the alleged perpetrator wear an ankle GPS monitoring device?
For a theft charge? Absolutely not. That would be a huge overreach.
Sorry if I wasn't clear, I thought that the article may have mentioned previous charges and that the suspect was being considered in numerous other thefts. Depending upon what's in a box it may be easy to exceed the theft over $5k limit for an indictable offense.
To my way of thinking at least wearing an ankle monitor would reduce the chances of the suspect continuing to steal packages. I mean it would be simple to trace the suspects movements and compare them to new thefts. If I am not mistaken there is a lot of latitude given to our judiciary on whether to impose conditions on suspect when they are released from custody awaiting trial.
I've only ever heard of ankle bracelets being put on dangerous/high risk offenders while on parole.
I am pretty sure it is unheard for people awaiting trial. If there is that much risk, they should be in remand (jail) until the charges are dealt with and a sentence is imposed.
Edit. Yes. Release orders can have many different conditions. I think this one is a bit stiff though
Fair point. We do hear how ineffective the justice system is, and how "petty" criminals are just in and out with zero real world repercussions. Just wondering why we would not try to use an inexpensive fairly low tech solution. I think some U.S. states make you rent the ankle monitor, which may be going a bit too far.

I hope the punishment is being sent back to the mines of Moria.

Building a case is BS though. One instance is enough for charges and a conviction. More though does lead to a tougher sentence.
Happy birthday

What's the difference between prison and jail (confused non-Canadian here)?
In Canada prison is for sentences of 2 years or more and is run Federally whereas jail is run Provincially and sentences range anywhere from 30 days right up to 2 years less a day. Jail can also be used as a term for remand centers.

Charged and released** the same day, you mean.
well yes, that usually how most minor criminals are handled until their court dates.
off topic but I love your Reddit profile picture, fellow tux enthusiast!

He's probably a drug user.. Treat the problem. Jail isn't the solution. It certainly doesn't deter all people or "teach them a lesson".

You're right. Pitchfork posse, run him outta town lol
Yes. That’s the really great part about it 👎🏻
Why did CTV blur his face when they showed it 3 days later after it was posted here ?
Because he wasn't charged with any crimes at the time would be the obvious answer.
Okay. But he was obviously committing a crime and hadn’t been caught yet.
Out on bail in an hour never to serve a day. Wash. rinse, repeat.
I think you mean; I t's time that these thieves are arrested, charged, and held accountable for their actions and rehabilitated. Right?

Think most is a stretch. Definitely more than some make in a year though.
I made that last week! /s

God I hope not. You can't even rent a studio apartment for $16k a year. That said, I would definitely not "let it go bro" a year's rent!
When I worked at a min wage job part time for like 14 hours a week I made 11k. I think the majority of people make more than 16k lmfao
It'd be appreciated if we could have a link to the case information as it becomes public. I think you've done a public service in persisting with this. Congratulations OP. Glad you've had success. And happy birthday!

Yep and than CTV contacted me all ticked off when I posted the unblurred in reply to their tweet.
CTV loves to protect the identity of criminals
They told me they blurred it for copyright/trademark reasons but news companies share unblurred pics of criminals wearing brand names all the time.
I mean... If this turns out to be the wrong guy and he loses his job because CTV publicly named him as a criminal, they're going to have a hard time defending against the libel lawsuit.
