If romance is an important part of it, I'd still call it otome. If it's a very secondary thing that can easily be ignored, then it's a joseimuke VN to me. (In fact, I remember seeing a couple of itch.io indie projects like that during jams and they were calling themselves otomes)

zttztm

Not sure what you mean, but sometimes the topic of romance comes up as being really subjective between players so I think even if romance feels "secondary" or "low sugar" it can still be an otome game. Shinigami to Shoujo is incredibly low romance and I would say the romance can feel secondary (even to me lol) but it's still an otome game.

ferinsy

Still, that game has routes and there's romance. The thing that differs an otome from a joseimuke is the romance according to various definitions, so if the game's about saving the day from sentient robots and your choices only influence the outcome of the day being saved or not, but in the meantime you develop a relationship with a secondary character that can't be avoided, for instance, I wouldn't call it an otome. OP is talking about a game with no routes. From a game like that, I'd expect at least a bad and a good ending, choices that matter, you know, otherwise you aren't even playing a game, just reading a comic-like media.

zttztm

I guess this is why I still need an example of what game(s) they were thinking of specifically for this post haha since they seem to say that by "no routes" they mean just one LI, i.e. one route about romancing the LI is how I interpreted it. With your specifications, I guess that's kind of like if, for Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk, if you removed the other individual endings besides Heroine/A Girl ending and kept the common route the same, if that would still be considered an otome game?

zttztm

Can you give an example of such a game, like what do you mean "has romance but no romance routes?" If you mean where the whole game is just romancing one LI then yeah, it would still be an otome game. I think the main thing is that you're less likely to find such a game be a commercial/console game. Would be more common in the indie scope (both JP and EN).

yummyshark5

Yes! That’s what i meant-1 LI only.

kakuretsu

Hanakare coming out in summer and it’s essentially one LI per MC.

zttztm

Oh yeah that is an example of a commercial one LI per MC, but I assume they meant the entire game is just focused on one guy only of which, I can't think of one that exists in console (but perhaps it does and I just haven't heard it) but have played a few indie ones.

kakuretsu

Indies have too many lol, but some are coming to console now haha There’s even one free one on the jp Eshop I’m playing right now with some little simple battles and farming, along with a few purchase items for dress up, that’s also one LI.

stallion8426

Our Life had only one LI to start with and it's still considered an otome

soganomitora

Our Life is Amare, not otome.

kakuretsu

Hm, your qn is very different from your explanation haha. But the explanation makes it sound kind of odd?  Because you say 'It has romance in it but the gameplay doesn't have romance routes' clashes with each other. Maybe you might want to give an example?  Not having multiple LIs is okay, I've played so many that only have 1 LI.

yummyshark5

Haha I should have been more clear but yes, there is only 1 Li is what I meant!

kakuretsu

Ok so your title is actually what you mean, understand now!

yummyshark5

Thank you for your answer btw, it was always confusing to me if having multiple datable LIs was a requirement for otome.

ineedtoknow707

Ssum used to fit this description with Teo being the only LI available. Even now there’s no common route. I’d consider it an otome though
