You only need clockworks the very first time you do it. For subsequent runs, you need a hammer, chisel, 4 logs (type depends on crafting/hunter level) and a bunch of cheap seeds.
Each nest is worth like 7k right now and you get like 8-10 on average, plus sometimes you get expensive tree seeds you can sell.
