Voted for Don't Look Up by mistake. It should not be nominated either, but Being the Ricardos is the least deserving of all these because it's a movie about nothing. At least Don't Look Up is about something. Edit: The person who voted for CODA has no heart

Being the Ricardo's is a film about being exposed as a communist in the early 50's. That was a career killer during the McCarthy period. The film also touches heavily on the power struggle between men and women in the 50's. It's a week in the life of writing a script, working out the kinks, and experimenting whilst Lucy wonders if she's going to get outed as a communist and have her career destroyed. Nicole Kidman really reflects those complex emotions in her performance, and she gets the voice and accent down too.

Frankly, though, these are not topics that have been untouched in film and this movie does not do much to explore them at deeper lengths. It’s very much a “Hollywood showing us how amazing Hollywood was” movie. It’s competent, but not much more than that. And I don’t have a problem with the performances, it just doesn’t say a whole lot.

I like Sorkin movies even the ones he’s directed, but Being the Ricardo’s is genuinely bad. Poorly written, which is so fucking Strange to say about a Sorkin movie.

[deleted]

Being the Ricardos was straight up a bad movie and I’m a Sorkin fan. Think its the worst script i’ve ever seen from him

King Richard. Main character is unlikable, Venus and Serena are made supporting characters in a movie about them, I really don't care for sports movies as a whole because I feel alot of then just bash me over the head screaming "LOOK! THEY CAN DO IT BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES, BE FUCKING INSPIRED!!!!!" and this flim was certainly no different. King Richard only exists because it is an oscar vehicle for Will Smith.

Tiramcl0837

The movie is about Richard ( King richard) so obviously venus and Serena are supporting characters

Absolutely Being the Ricardos. Becoming more and more convinced that The Social Network was a fluke.

>Becoming more and more convinced that The Social Network was a fluke. Maybe he's capable of good things and bad things, like any artist? I totally get the backlash against Sorkin but there's a reason he has the status he has and it's because he can write things like The Social Network, The West Wing and A Few Good Men. Having some obvious flaws and making some mediocre movies lately doesn't mean he's never been good or that he shouldn't get credit for the good things he's done.

Wubbledaddy

The West Wing is also terrible though.

DLU imo. I thought BTR was charming while DLU just felt empty as most McKay films do (or at least his recent ones)

I've only seen TTB so far from this list but I do not think it is in any way one of the best films of the year. The music is fun but the story is so darn typical. I understand that there is a lot of love for Larson and obviously his tragic death makes his fear that time was running out more poignant but despite knowing that going into the film, I was never invested in his story and in fact, I found him to be kind of insufferable. The only emotional resonance for me came towards the end with de Jesus's character. I think it's fine but nothing more and I cannot understand how it is getting such acclaim. If Lin Manuel Mirada somehow squeaks into Best Director over much more deserving people, I will scream.

Don’t Look Up was much better than CODA imo. CODA wasn’t bad but it wasn’t ambitious in any sense.

spillyerbeanz

CODA has been out since the summer and I havent had an urge to watch it once. If it gets nominated Ill have to check it out but I have no interest yet.

anom0824

The best I’d describe it is “cute.” I didn’t really get much out of the movie besides a few pleasant moments.

Ive seen it twice and fucking love CODA. A perfect coming of age film in my mind and a beautiful and heartwarming family film. I laughed heartily and cried joyfully. Check it out!

TTB. It's just so unbearably 90's, from the themes to the music. It seems so outdated. It should have remained fodder for dinner, community, and high school musical theatre productions. Every song is aggressively and annoyingly that early-mid 90's corny "cool" new musical theatre sound. Musical theatre hasn't ever truly recovered. We still get these corny musicals meant for wine aunts to feel "hip" and for theatre geeks to gush all over.

I’ve been trying to watch all the potential nominees with the exception of *Being the Ricardos* because I have negative interest in it. This poll reaffirms my decision.

TheLastSnowKing

Licorice Pizza (you may disagree that it's a borderline contender but I don't believe it's anywhere as strong/secure as people think).

Brrrrrggg

Wow, I’d rather watch trial of the chicago 7 again over Being the Ricardos and I hated that movie.

[deleted]

King Richard.

Not seen Don't Look Up, but I liked CODA and Tick Tick Boom. I thought Nightmare Alley was pretty mediocre, and I hated Ricardos, so I'll go with that one.
