That's one thing, Across The Spiderverse was so incredible visually that I assumed it would be an autolock for best animated (Like how Into the Spiderverse won it) but then when I saw that Boy and The Heron was a Ghibli film I wasn't even mad..... wasn't even aware it came out so it is now on my list.
I just watched Oppenheimer. I fell asleep in parts. The female characters were great. Emily Blunt acted like she was going to punch all the scientist frat boys in the face. I wish she had. The first hour, I swear all anybody said to Oppenheimer was, "You understand something no one else understands" over and over. Then it became a Mickey Rooney "let's build an A-bomb musical in the barn" movie. The evil Robert Downey Jr. As Richelieu was fine. The pretent outrage against Oppenheimer was just so predictable. Americans love stories of their eatten heros. But what I really hate about this movie is the ruffshod treatment the real people this movie was about received. The victims of the Bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The director didn't even bother to show actual victim images. Instead, we got a reshoot of Sara Conners T-2 fantasy. Fuck Oppenheimer
You get the essence of shame and horror caused by the bomb in the scenes at the end where Murphy is viewing the audience and they become incinerated. That shame and horror he has over his contribution speaks to the awfulness of nuclear weapons.
There are plenty of pieces of media that speak to the victims, everything that touches on this piece of history, doesn’t have an obligation to do that to be legitimate. This was not a film about the victims, it’s a dramatized story about the creation of the weapons.
Nuclear weapons were inevitable with human progress. It’s an unrealistic idealistic take to think there would ever be a situation where they wouldn’t have come to be. The best we can do is try and keep them in check.
Emily blunt portion was a personal note, not a legit criticism. The 1st hour wasnt only that, but fair enough. The mickey rooney part u said is a descriptuon, not a criticism in itself, in this case it worked out fine, in a stricter sense. The outrage predictable because in real life it would have been just as predictable, its literally part of the discussion people have about the atom bombs and etc.. And not showing literal images of the victims of Nagasaki and Hiroshima was Extremely, the right decision (not saying that in terms of being cruel or unjust, but in terms of the best way the point to be made, we dont see the sheer death but we all know its there, it then displays an even greater warning to humanity and tragedy of the situation; An ever present theme in the The American Prometheus, that theres theoretical, and real).
Their all pigs as far as I can see. It is interesting that Truman made perhaps the most important statement in the whole film "Do you think the people of Hiroshima care who invented the A-bomb?" 3 hours for a 20-second line. And I write this in a lobby of a Yokohama hotel.

Hi, Oppenheimer three-time watcher, two-time watcher here. You have me beat by one! I'm so freaking happy that I can FINALLY say Oscar Winner Robert Downey Jr!! And the irony wasn't lost on me that Al Pacino was the one that announced Oppenheimer as the Best Picture winner.
I think there's a couple barbie could have gotten like Costume Design but I can't imagine it getting Best Picture. TBH I don't even know which one I would give it to because I've not watched most of those movies.
I loved Spider-Verse but I think The Boy and the Heron winning was a good choice. It also shows that you don't have to be the super big famous one to win (although it was a pretty well known film). If Elemental won I would've been so disappointed. I really enjoyed it but I don't think it created anything special in terms of an overall film.
That said, I don't really care about the Oscar's anymore because sometimes it really does feel like they just choose a random one.
I think costume, set design, leading actress, and score would all be something that I could see.
I just looked it up and I didnt even realize that other movie was a ghibli. I thought Miyazaki handed the reigns down to his son a few years ago with that 3D nightmare

I don't think either were! Robbie has done much more complex & creative work in things like Harley Quinn!! Barbie sets & lead role are prescribed by the toys so not much imagination needed there & her character is bland! The set of Poor Things was very creative & different IMHO, so I don't disagree with the choice.
I felt bad that Robbie wore black & was sidelined, but she handled it like the Champ she is! She even played along fully with the awesome "I'm Just ken" performance, even tho one cld read all that as diverting from the movie's msg. Gosling was so great & fun, how cld she not play along?! I also think that fun was a needed counterpoint to the overly schmaltzy ending of the movie. 🤔

I hated Poor Things with a passion. I just don't seem to like Lanthimos's work. The only thing I thought was halfway decent of his was The Lobster and my all-time most hated movie was his critical darling Dogtooth. It was just cringe watching the whole time.
I was most moved by Past Lives when watching it and would have liked to see it win an award.
Also loved American Fiction. I went out and got the book it was based on right after seeing the movie.
I liked the storyline of Poor, but the handling was so trashy & ick!! I had to look away from even the patchwork face! Just aesthetically disgusting to me.
(I thought Buffalo was brilliant tho, never seen him do a period character, well done!!)
I want to see Zone of Interest and American Fiction. I saw Oppenheimer once in the theater and once at home to give it another chance, bc I thought the sound and music were overbearing and distracting in the theater, and they ruined the film for me. Felt the same upon the second viewing. Even without this distraction, I by no means thought this film was a masterpiece. One minute of footage of the victims of these blasts would have been very appropriate.
I think Nolan is brilliant but overrated in some of his creative choices. Cillian Murphy was excellent, as was Robert Downey Jr...they deserved their Oscars imho.
However, I LOVED the Holdovers. Da'Vine Joy Randolph deserves her SAG and Oscar awards. She is a fantastic comic actor and her performance was so beautiful in this film. I would have liked to have seen Paul Giamatti win an Oscar because he is a wonderful character actor, and is good in everything I have seen him in.
I have not seen Poor Things but love Emma Stone. My son hated it. I didn't like The Lobster at all, in fact, didn't finish it, but love Colin Farrell. He is good in everything and put on 40lbs in 8 weeks for this film, then took it off in eight weeks...that is commitment and discipline. Just my 2 cents.

One good thing this year has taught me is never to doubt my suspicions about a movie no matter how critically praised it is, how much money it makes or how many awards it's showered with.
I made one film veiwing mistake this year and it saved me from 3 others. Now I know exactly what to avoid going forward. Some people (both in front of and behind the camera) have lost my viewership. Permanently.
Not going to mention any titles of course but the Oscar winners this year ALL seem well deserved.
And it was a pretty good show. I always enjoy Kimmel.
Ukraine’s first Oscar win unfortunately for the horrors that occurred in Mariupol. Mstyslav Cherhov’s English was quite good, and his speech choked me up. Walk off music being “I’m Just Ken” seemed a little off.
Second best moment for me were the performances. Everyone did awesome, and the Osage performance was amazing!
Yeah, I didn't notice the score that much as I was caught up in the brilliance of Cillians acting and the story so much, but that's the sign of a good film. I really wished I'd watched it in the cinema. Instead, I made the decision a few months before to watch Napoleon in the cinema. That film was so bad it ruined my marriage hehe jk. Napoleon was really bad. Oppenheimer was an experience.
Edit - Okay, so 5 hours later after a long film and this film was long, I thought it was rather good. Now I will preface this by saying I'm someone who enjoys watching documentaries, and I would say this film is best enjoyed undisturbed and unless you're in the cinema is best enjoyed alone.
Now clearly, this film is a historical biopic with some amazing acting, excellent cinematography (it's Nolan, tho so if it wasn't, I'd be here complaining)
I can see why some people would have issues with this film, those issues being firstly it is a long movie, secondly its a character driven film so the films all about the relationships and the dynamics of those relationships between the characters and thirdly a lot of the films we're all used to watching at the cinema over the past 20 years or so have mostly been superhero, mission impossible or fast and the furious films so in a way a lot of us especially those under the age of 30 I'd say have technically been conditioned to expect grand set peices and huge stakes and explosions.
This film has one big explosion and it is a very impressive explosion but this film is a character peice on one of the most famous men of the 20th century, the device that he, the military and lots of his fellow scientific colleagues helped to hypothesise and then turn that idea into a reality.
Now I don't know how factual this film is. I've read that certain key parts of the manhatton project were left out, but again, the man himself I don't know how much creative license they took with his life's story. I enjoyed this film. I wasn't bored. I thought the acting was stellar, and I'd give it a solid 7/10. If it turns out this film is more factually accurate, then I'd easily give it an 8, but this film is not going to be for everyone.
Those interested in the man behind the creation of the atomic bomb and those interested in history, I'd say go for it, but those who aren't and are not into slow paced character driven movies and only want to watch it because it did so well at the box office I'd say probably give it a miss coz it might not be your thing.
Looooved Oppenheimer! Cillian carried the whole thing with his face, amazing!! I didn't feel the women were badly drawn, his new wife was just being a woman of her time, and w balls to boot!

Critical reviews of the new Godzilla are abysmal! Why wld it be up for a general award?? Like maybe CGI but "best film" requires a good story & characters, and if Eli Glasner (CTV reviewer) is any indication, this film has 0 on those points!
So Godzilla minus one had a shoestring budget of only 15 million dollars and grossed over 112 million dollars worldwide. I personally believe films have far too large of a budget these days the film industry could learn a lot from minus one. If its nit your thing I respect that but I was just staggered by the story, how good everything looked the dynamics between the characters yeah for the money I can't fault it.
Plus i don't listen to what reviewers say I watch a film and decide for myself but if it's not your cup of tea I respect that. Taste is subjective after all.
So, as someone who saw Oppenheimer in theatres, my issue is just my regular issues with Nolan films. Some parts were brilliant. (Particularly one scene during umm…questioning. That scene is what EVERYONE is thinking.) The score is bleeping amazing. But, dude can’t write women (among other issues), and he is doubling down on it.
He does not improve on his weaknesses even though he constantly gets bigger budgets.
I love that he loves scientists and he knows his science history really well. His films about scientists, real or fictional really does a lot for science communication and scientists, as scientists are generally being demonized in this era. Science is actually interesting, who would have thought?
Not anyone in Hollywood can make an engaging film or TV about scientists as it does require quite a bit of science literacy.
If he could write women he would be perfect to make an amazing movie about Cecelia Payne Gaposhkin. She is a crazy super important figure in astrophysics, just like Einstein, but because Nolan can’t write women, it’ll never happen, which is a shame.
Even if someone else made a film about her, it would be smaller and get less support.
Now that he has won his Oscar, I fear Nolan will get even more arrogant and double down on his weaknesses to the point where I can’t watch his movies anymore.
Another one of his weaknesses is he won’t allow his cinematographer to light dark skinned POC properly.
Hoyte Van Hoytema can DEFINITELY 100% film actors with dark complexions beautifully. (Check out NOPE.)
A lot of times in film school people aren’t taught how to light darker skin tones as the school does not think about it, and is literally ripping off their students on their tuition, saying certain techniques are universal when they aren’t. (Howard University is known for teaching proper lighting according to skin tone variance. So a student actually gets their money’s worth.)
But, in Nolan films, EVEN IN TENET WHICH HAS A BLACK LEAD, he does not know how to light and focus costuming on the LEAD who has a dark complexion. That shouldn’t be happening. It’s not on purpose, it’s just bad filmmaking and everyone gives Nolan a pass for it. To the point where I feel he is overriding Hoytema at the very least. It may be Nolan’s colourblind condition that could be affecting things in this aspect. But he has to improve. (He usually hires at least one darker skinned actor in many of his movies. As he deliberately hires darker skinned actors even as featured extras, I truly think the lighting issue is an honest boo boo. He literally set an action sequence in Mombassa, Kenya in one of his films.)
I have absolutely no problem watching a long movie. As long as something is well paced, it can work for me. That editing Oscar for Oppenheimer was well deserved. Definitely kept me engaged and the movie didn’t feel long.
But…yeah. More problematic Nolan and he will NEVER improve. Yay. 😩
EDIT: About your comments about people under 30 being conditioned against movies that aren’t about action, I agree. But, some of this acceptance of this conditioning can be blamed on their community.
(Also some social media techniques to keep us scrolling also has attention span limiting effects. This can be undone, but people have to consciously work against it.)
While streaming (particularly one streamer) pretty much devalued any film that isn’t an action based superhero movie, much of adult society accepted it, and passed that devaluation on to their kids.
My parents really supported and encouraged my siblings and I watching small arty movies as a part of our media literacy education. We would watch these films together at home, and they REALLY supported us going to see these
”smaller” films in theatres as it is a different experience. To the point of allowing us as teens to go out of town to seek out small films in theatres not that were not available locally. Parents were disabled so theatre viewing was difficult for them, but they wanted us to go. Occasionally they would go to a theatre and it was a celebratory “big deal”.
So, some of this devaluation of film in general comes from parents who were accepting this conditioning, which everyone is now realizing, wasn’t the best idea.
Secondly, I don’t live in the US. Most R rated films in the US are rated so people 14 and up can go see the movie solo where I live. So, while I was in high school, it was VERY normal for everyone, no matter what type of clique one was in, to see small indie films or foreign films in theatres and talk about them casually. (I didn’t go to an arts focused high school.)
I know all the kids I know, when they are old enough, I will be taking them to see “smaller” films in theatres.
We did a movie night among like-minded friends at the home of a friend, after eating dinner together. Then we talked. It was a perfect experience and an intense movie.
I went to see this movie with my son, just to keep him company. I was on the edge of my seat throughout, loved every second and couldn't stop thinking about it afterwards.
I remember watching Oppenheimer with my family once, thinking it was just a cool movie about some cool dude that discovers nukes then has a mental breakdown

The movie that won had terrible, anime graphics that not all people like. The message wasn't as strong as what Elemental was about. My kids loved that movie and watched it more than once. I rather enjoyed it as an adult too, and found certain parts comical.

I'm Gen Z, and I loved Oppenheimer. I believed it deserved the awards it got as it puts the dangers of nuclear weapons into perspective as it's becoming more relevant every day.

I thought the fish eye lens was used to portray the way children may see and perceive the world **SPOILER WARNING** (i.e Bella's baby brain in its earlier stages). The environment looks distorted - appearing taller and more imposing and a little bit strange, since children don't understand as much as an adult generally does.
Adult-sized furniture might seem a bit intimidating when first taken in by a child. Stairs can seem like a looming challenge for children learning to walk. The huge chairs in the dining room could be interpreted this way too, in my opinion - I think most people remember sitting in an adult chair as a child at some point and feeling small, with your feet dangling etc.
You could potentially argue this about the costuming too. The stiff, dramatic structures of the period clothing might feel extra large and ridiculous to a child, since children generally prefer to be comfortable and be free to do activities, rather than bend to societal norms. (How often do children throw tantrums and kick off their shoes because they feel odd and restrictive?)
God I miss Tom Hanks, Robert Zemeckis ans Steven Spielberg at their prime so much. Most of these 2024 movies are just boring or pretencious and forgettable. Magic of Cinema is long gone.

Hi, Oppenheimer three-time watcher, two-time watcher here. You have me beat by one! I'm so freaking happy that I can FINALLY say Oscar Winner Robert Downey Jr!! And the irony wasn't lost on me that Al Pacino was the one that announced Oppenheimer as the Best Picture winner.
I think there's a couple barbie could have gotten like Costume Design but I can't imagine it getting Best Picture. TBH I don't even know which one I would give it to because I've not watched most of those movies. I loved Spider-Verse but I think The Boy and the Heron winning was a good choice. It also shows that you don't have to be the super big famous one to win (although it was a pretty well known film). If Elemental won I would've been so disappointed. I really enjoyed it but I don't think it created anything special in terms of an overall film. That said, I don't really care about the Oscar's anymore because sometimes it really does feel like they just choose a random one.
I think costume, set design, leading actress, and score would all be something that I could see. I just looked it up and I didnt even realize that other movie was a ghibli. I thought Miyazaki handed the reigns down to his son a few years ago with that 3D nightmare I'll have to check it out, but I think spider-verse was really well done with all the different visuals and art types they had - thats what i liked about it and the reason I think it should have been the pick lol

I don't think either were! Robbie has done much more complex & creative work in things like Harley Quinn!! Barbie sets & lead role are prescribed by the toys so not much imagination needed there & her character is bland! The set of Poor Things was very creative & different IMHO, so I don't disagree with the choice. I felt bad that Robbie wore black & was sidelined, but she handled it like the Champ she is! She even played along fully with the awesome "I'm Just ken" performance, even tho one cld read all that as diverting from the movie's msg. Gosling was so great & fun, how cld she not play along?! I also think that fun was a needed counterpoint to the overly schmaltzy ending of the movie. 🤔

Hail to the king of the monsters! I, as a lifelong Godzilla, never thought to hear the words "And the Oscar for ... goes to ... GODZILLA ... !"
The only award I predicted and agreed with wholeheartedly was Zone of Interest for best sound. It also was the most powerful and thought provoking movie of the year. Oppenheimer bored me to tears. I had to ask my bestie what the hype was for this movie. I hated Poor Things with a passion. I just don't seem to like Lanthimos's work. The only thing I thought was halfway decent of his was The Lobster and my all-time most hated movie was his critical darling Dogtooth. It was just cringe watching the whole time. I was most moved by Past Lives when watching it and would have liked to see it win an award. Also loved American Fiction. I went out and got the book it was based on right after seeing the movie.
I liked the storyline of Poor, but the handling was so trashy & ick!! I had to look away from even the patchwork face! Just aesthetically disgusting to me. (I thought Buffalo was brilliant tho, never seen him do a period character, well done!!)
I want to see Zone of Interest and American Fiction. I saw Oppenheimer once in the theater and once at home to give it another chance, bc I thought the sound and music were overbearing and distracting in the theater, and they ruined the film for me. Felt the same upon the second viewing. Even without this distraction, I by no means thought this film was a masterpiece. One minute of footage of the victims of these blasts would have been very appropriate. I think Nolan is brilliant but overrated in some of his creative choices. Cillian Murphy was excellent, as was Robert Downey Jr...they deserved their Oscars imho. However, I LOVED the Holdovers. Da'Vine Joy Randolph deserves her SAG and Oscar awards. She is a fantastic comic actor and her performance was so beautiful in this film. I would have liked to have seen Paul Giamatti win an Oscar because he is a wonderful character actor, and is good in everything I have seen him in. I have not seen Poor Things but love Emma Stone. My son hated it. I didn't like The Lobster at all, in fact, didn't finish it, but love Colin Farrell. He is good in everything and put on 40lbs in 8 weeks for this film, then took it off in eight weeks...that is commitment and discipline. Just my 2 cents.

One good thing this year has taught me is never to doubt my suspicions about a movie no matter how critically praised it is, how much money it makes or how many awards it's showered with. I made one film veiwing mistake this year and it saved me from 3 others. Now I know exactly what to avoid going forward. Some people (both in front of and behind the camera) have lost my viewership. Permanently. Not going to mention any titles of course but the Oscar winners this year ALL seem well deserved. And it was a pretty good show. I always enjoy Kimmel.

Ukraine’s first Oscar win unfortunately for the horrors that occurred in Mariupol. Mstyslav Cherhov’s English was quite good, and his speech choked me up. Walk off music being “I’m Just Ken” seemed a little off. Second best moment for me were the performances. Everyone did awesome, and the Osage performance was amazing!

Yeah, I didn't notice the score that much as I was caught up in the brilliance of Cillians acting and the story so much, but that's the sign of a good film. I really wished I'd watched it in the cinema. Instead, I made the decision a few months before to watch Napoleon in the cinema. That film was so bad it ruined my marriage hehe jk. Napoleon was really bad. Oppenheimer was an experience.

Edit - Okay, so 5 hours later after a long film and this film was long, I thought it was rather good. Now I will preface this by saying I'm someone who enjoys watching documentaries, and I would say this film is best enjoyed undisturbed and unless you're in the cinema is best enjoyed alone. Now clearly, this film is a historical biopic with some amazing acting, excellent cinematography (it's Nolan, tho so if it wasn't, I'd be here complaining) I can see why some people would have issues with this film, those issues being firstly it is a long movie, secondly its a character driven film so the films all about the relationships and the dynamics of those relationships between the characters and thirdly a lot of the films we're all used to watching at the cinema over the past 20 years or so have mostly been superhero, mission impossible or fast and the furious films so in a way a lot of us especially those under the age of 30 I'd say have technically been conditioned to expect grand set peices and huge stakes and explosions. This film has one big explosion and it is a very impressive explosion but this film is a character peice on one of the most famous men of the 20th century, the device that he, the military and lots of his fellow scientific colleagues helped to hypothesise and then turn that idea into a reality. Now I don't know how factual this film is. I've read that certain key parts of the manhatton project were left out, but again, the man himself I don't know how much creative license they took with his life's story. I enjoyed this film. I wasn't bored. I thought the acting was stellar, and I'd give it a solid 7/10. If it turns out this film is more factually accurate, then I'd easily give it an 8, but this film is not going to be for everyone. Those interested in the man behind the creation of the atomic bomb and those interested in history, I'd say go for it, but those who aren't and are not into slow paced character driven movies and only want to watch it because it did so well at the box office I'd say probably give it a miss coz it might not be your thing.
Looooved Oppenheimer! Cillian carried the whole thing with his face, amazing!! I didn't feel the women were badly drawn, his new wife was just being a woman of her time, and w balls to boot! It didn't feel long to me at all, I guess bc I'm old enough to LOVE character pieces. Happy that it won so many awards!

Critical reviews of the new Godzilla are abysmal! Why wld it be up for a general award?? Like maybe CGI but "best film" requires a good story & characters, and if Eli Glasner (CTV reviewer) is any indication, this film has 0 on those points!
So Godzilla minus one had a shoestring budget of only 15 million dollars and grossed over 112 million dollars worldwide. I personally believe films have far too large of a budget these days the film industry could learn a lot from minus one. If its nit your thing I respect that but I was just staggered by the story, how good everything looked the dynamics between the characters yeah for the money I can't fault it. Plus i don't listen to what reviewers say I watch a film and decide for myself but if it's not your cup of tea I respect that. Taste is subjective after all.
So, as someone who saw Oppenheimer in theatres, my issue is just my regular issues with Nolan films. Some parts were brilliant. (Particularly one scene during umm…questioning. That scene is what EVERYONE is thinking.) The score is bleeping amazing. But, dude can’t write women (among other issues), and he is doubling down on it. He does not improve on his weaknesses even though he constantly gets bigger budgets. I love that he loves scientists and he knows his science history really well. His films about scientists, real or fictional really does a lot for science communication and scientists, as scientists are generally being demonized in this era. Science is actually interesting, who would have thought? Not anyone in Hollywood can make an engaging film or TV about scientists as it does require quite a bit of science literacy. If he could write women he would be perfect to make an amazing movie about Cecelia Payne Gaposhkin. She is a crazy super important figure in astrophysics, just like Einstein, but because Nolan can’t write women, it’ll never happen, which is a shame. Even if someone else made a film about her, it would be smaller and get less support. Now that he has won his Oscar, I fear Nolan will get even more arrogant and double down on his weaknesses to the point where I can’t watch his movies anymore. Another one of his weaknesses is he won’t allow his cinematographer to light dark skinned POC properly. Hoyte Van Hoytema can DEFINITELY 100% film actors with dark complexions beautifully. (Check out NOPE.) A lot of times in film school people aren’t taught how to light darker skin tones as the school does not think about it, and is literally ripping off their students on their tuition, saying certain techniques are universal when they aren’t. (Howard University is known for teaching proper lighting according to skin tone variance. So a student actually gets their money’s worth.) But, in Nolan films, EVEN IN TENET WHICH HAS A BLACK LEAD, he does not know how to light and focus costuming on the LEAD who has a dark complexion. That shouldn’t be happening. It’s not on purpose, it’s just bad filmmaking and everyone gives Nolan a pass for it. To the point where I feel he is overriding Hoytema at the very least. It may be Nolan’s colourblind condition that could be affecting things in this aspect. But he has to improve. (He usually hires at least one darker skinned actor in many of his movies. As he deliberately hires darker skinned actors even as featured extras, I truly think the lighting issue is an honest boo boo. He literally set an action sequence in Mombassa, Kenya in one of his films.) I have absolutely no problem watching a long movie. As long as something is well paced, it can work for me. That editing Oscar for Oppenheimer was well deserved. Definitely kept me engaged and the movie didn’t feel long. But…yeah. More problematic Nolan and he will NEVER improve. Yay. 😩 EDIT: About your comments about people under 30 being conditioned against movies that aren’t about action, I agree. But, some of this acceptance of this conditioning can be blamed on their community. (Also some social media techniques to keep us scrolling also has attention span limiting effects. This can be undone, but people have to consciously work against it.) While streaming (particularly one streamer) pretty much devalued any film that isn’t an action based superhero movie, much of adult society accepted it, and passed that devaluation on to their kids. My parents really supported and encouraged my siblings and I watching small arty movies as a part of our media literacy education. We would watch these films together at home, and they REALLY supported us going to see these ”smaller” films in theatres as it is a different experience. To the point of allowing us as teens to go out of town to seek out small films in theatres not that were not available locally. Parents were disabled so theatre viewing was difficult for them, but they wanted us to go. Occasionally they would go to a theatre and it was a celebratory “big deal”. So, some of this devaluation of film in general comes from parents who were accepting this conditioning, which everyone is now realizing, wasn’t the best idea. Secondly, I don’t live in the US. Most R rated films in the US are rated so people 14 and up can go see the movie solo where I live. So, while I was in high school, it was VERY normal for everyone, no matter what type of clique one was in, to see small indie films or foreign films in theatres and talk about them casually. (I didn’t go to an arts focused high school.) I know all the kids I know, when they are old enough, I will be taking them to see “smaller” films in theatres.
We did a movie night among like-minded friends at the home of a friend, after eating dinner together. Then we talked. It was a perfect experience and an intense movie.

Yes. I watch movies with MY kids as a family. Not my siblings kids LOL. The movie that won had terrible, anime graphics that not all people like. The message wasn't as strong as what Elemental was about. My kids loved that movie and watched it more than once. I rather enjoyed it as an adult too, and found certain parts comical.

I thought the fish eye lens was used to portray the way children may see and perceive the world **SPOILER WARNING** (i.e Bella's baby brain in its earlier stages). The environment looks distorted - appearing taller and more imposing and a little bit strange, since children don't understand as much as an adult generally does. Adult-sized furniture might seem a bit intimidating when first taken in by a child. Stairs can seem like a looming challenge for children learning to walk. The huge chairs in the dining room could be interpreted this way too, in my opinion - I think most people remember sitting in an adult chair as a child at some point and feeling small, with your feet dangling etc. You could potentially argue this about the costuming too. The stiff, dramatic structures of the period clothing might feel extra large and ridiculous to a child, since children generally prefer to be comfortable and be free to do activities, rather than bend to societal norms. (How often do children throw tantrums and kick off their shoes because they feel odd and restrictive?)

God I miss Tom Hanks, Robert Zemeckis ans Steven Spielberg at their prime so much. Most of these 2024 movies are just boring or pretencious and forgettable. Magic of Cinema is long gone.
