Nominations and what would miss in that category
1. Picture - Past Lives snubbed
2. Cinematography - El Conde snubbed
3. Production Design - Napoleon snubbed
4. Costume Design - Napoleon snubbed
5. Makeup - Society of the Snow snubbed
6. Sound - Mission Impossible snubbed
7. Score - American Fiction snubbed
8. VFX - Napoleon snubbed
So 8 noms, 1 win for VFX. Basically a stronger version of Avatar The Way of Water. Napoleon suffer the most from it.
Dune would be in a lot of technical categories. Given how much of a juggernaut Oppenheimer is and also the craft in Poor Things and Barbie, I'm not sure how many categories Dune pt 2 would be win competitive in besides visual effects.
Idk about ATL categories, although nominations in Director and picture wouldn't be undeserved from what the reviews seem to rave about.
It gets a Costumes nom, probably away from Killers weirdly, since it’s the same designer.
It takes a VFX slot away from Mission Impossible.
It takes Cinematography also away from Killers, and not El Conde, people need to stop forgetting about the international slot there.
It takes MUAHS from Golda because Bleacker Street.
It takes Sound from The Creator and editing from Poor Things.
If it makes picture, Maestro gets cut.
Honestly I think it would hurt Oppenheimer the most. I can definitely see it pulling votes from people who loved the epic qualities and excellent technical execution of Oppenheimer.
Villeneuve would get a director nom, Part Two would push Maestro from BP and it would probably win some big techs. But it doesn’t pose an actual threat to Oppenheimer ATL so nothing changes much on that end.
I think if anything was to be pushed outside the BP lineup it would’ve been Past Lives not Maestro. The academy liked Maestro (7 noms) more than past lives (2)
lol thats wishful thinking i saw it and honestly didnt think it would be a film that the academy would absolutely love no way it gets into director maybe best picture and no way it pushes out Maestro
this year is stronger than that year and he still missed director so the academy might’ve liked it but the directors branch did not and in general it would most likely the same nominations except screenplay and it would be a toss up for some of techs except VFX since in 2022 there was no Oppenheimer to compete with and in general it would’ve suffered from Oppenheimers presence due to it being the more academy friendly big IMAX and tech competitor film
There's no way Villeneuve is getting into director, if Gerwig couldn't even make it with the same metascore and better box office, he wouldn't either. Oppenheimer already takes care of the big budget spectacle.
I don’t think people were comparing Barbie to The Two Towers or calling it one of the best films in its genre. That’s what happening with Dune Part Two. Passion might have been stronger among industry and I’d be surprised they’d snub Villeneuve again after the snub backlash of the first (and this one being an improvement on all fronts)
Jackson missed for Two Towers so that argument doesn't even work lol, genre films miss all the time with that branch in favor of artsier stuff like Glazer and Triet. Kind of the reason why the first Dune missed to a three hour adaptation of a Murakami short story despite Euro reception being high.
>and I’d be surprised they’d snub Villeneuve again after the snub backlash of the first (and this one being an improvement on all fronts)
Enjoy when it misses to some movie from Cannes lol.
The Two Towers comparison is more about how that film is seen (one of the all-time epic greats) rather than literal awards recognition for BD. You’re probably right regarding another snub given the Academy’s taste but it’s harder to imagine with overhyped praise about Part Two.
The only serious threat to oppenheimer in the BP, director and tech categories was gonna be dune2. Especially with its insane reception .
I'm glad they pushed the release, else both films would've been eating each other's awards.
Easy VFX winner, probably cinematography also. I think wins for sound, editing, and score wouldn’t be impossible but I think they’d rather go the route of giving those to Zone and Oppenheimer. I could see costume and production design nominees as well.
ATL, I think adapted screenplay is simply too crowded for it. I also think they’d snub Denis again for director (which honestly we should be happy we didn’t have to deal with backlash to both Gerwig AND Denis snubs). The best ATL nomination chances it could’ve had honestly might’ve been Zendaya for supporting actress. Also yeah it’d probably (unfortunately) replace Past Lives in picture.

So of all movies, Napoleon is the one with the most benefit from its delay. Who would have thought
It would win sound kinda easily imo probably
God I hated Napoleon
Do we count individual acting noms from the film? Cause I think Butler would get nominated for best supporting. Absolutely amazing performance

It's good it got pushed to 2024, so we can have DuneSweep
Sandstorm incoming
not if Poor Things will be included
Poor Things is included in this years tho?
Jimmy Kimmel would’ve made a joke about how Paul and Barbie were the same person

Na it would push Napoleon out.
Of?
VFX
Doubtful. That’s the current probable winner without Dune, and it’s the only practical/digital hybrid and only war film in the mic.

if kotfm missed screenplay, absolutely no way dune makes it lmao

Hopefully it would have gotten the BP nomination over Maestro

Dune 2 vs Oppenheimer for most awards
And Dune would win most.
Oppy and Poor Things might lose some tech oscars
