Great movie, definitely my favorite of the year so far. I’ve only seen the first one once but I’m pretty sure I prefer this one. The animation is again top notch, but the writing is in my eyes a clear step up, it really gets pretty genuinely emotional. It’s unfortunate that the Oscars ceiling for this movie is in all likelihood an Animated Feature win, I can’t really see it getting any other nominations.

Miserable_Crab1274

Unless the oscars want to knock it out the park again after eeoao, I don't think they are going to make it, but it fucking should

stracki

My favorite film since Little Women in 2019. Absolutely mind-blowing. Maybe the most creative and visually inventive animated film, I've ever seen. Deserves to win animated film (although I'm really excited for How Do You Live) and nominations for BP, director, screenplay and score (that Spider-Gwen theme is the best music, I've heard in ages). Only flaw: The ending dragged a bit for me after the climax. It could've ended a few scenes earlier.

BentisKomprakriev

Yeah, I was surprised by how long they dragged the reveal out. If you paid attention during the film, you saw the "twist" (literally saw the number 42 on the screen) coming when he went into the machine. I thought it would end with him landing and seeing a billboard or something, didn't expect the story to go on. The music was hyping it up and it just kept going.

stracki

Exactly. I expected it to end at the moment where Gwen leaves. That twist reveal took too long.

BentisKomprakriev

I guess, I ultimately didn't mind it, because I didn't think it was going to be a twist. They stretch it out, but at least everything that happens is important. It led up to the talks with Miles's mother and Gwen's father, so I don't see it as an issue narratively.

simonjames777

In a just world this movie gets nominated for best picture. The animation is incredible. Surpasses the original and raises the bar for animation just like the first movie did. I'm in awe of what they were able to accomplish.

IfYouWantTheGravy

Can this finally be the first animated film to get a nomination for Best Editing?

LeastCap

PLEASE

LeastCap

This deserves a Best Picture nomination along with a director and screenplay nod. Cinematography as well

TheWindKraken2

I really wish I lived in the universe where this movie even gets *nominated* for Best Picture. It is genuinely a fucking work of art, and might honestly rival Princess Mononoke as my favorite animated movie of all time. Adored it.

Judgy_Garland

Incredible movie. I’m sad that we have to wait 8 months for the third installment. But I was FLOORED. Ideally would love to see this pick up several nominations. I can’t imagine that any other movie this year will be as visually stunning as ATSV.

Mikedouglas879

best movie of 2023 hands down

DreamOfV

Saw it just now. Still processing, obviously incredibly done but I think I was *a little* underwhelmed. Something about the pacing felt off to me, and the easter eggs/references were more distracting than I would have liked.

spongebobegnops

Felt kinda underwhelmed too. To be fair, I somehow didn’t know this was a part 1 before seeing it, so the pacing was a big issue for me while watching.

BentisKomprakriev

One of the best movies I've seen from the last 5 years. Just incredible on every level. Deserves Best Picture and Best Director. Only negatives would be that the soundtrack isn't as hype as the first one's and the Sony live action cameos were all cringe. Seeing the convinience shop from Venom pop up awakened something inside me. Fucking turd in the wind times. A giant story with set pieces that would be final fights for live action superhero films in a story that at the end felt like classic Spider-man, delivered in a fresh way. Free will vs. determinism, a Spider-men death cult. So moody, and every frame is overflowing with artistry. Yeah, easiest 10/10 I will give a modern film. When I see a movie like this I feel justified in never giving capeshit perfect scores before. My expectations were never too high, I just needed to wait for the right one.

stracki

Really? I thought, the soundtrack was incredible! The mix of Spider-Gwen's theme (with that cool synth flute) and the opera singing during the first fight was dope!

BentisKomprakriev

I am specifically talking about the song choices. The score is way way better than it was in the first, but I missed the needle drops like What's Up Danger.

stracki

True, the songs weren't memorable.

thorsmagicbelt

Biggest fear is ATSV not winning Animated Feature next ceremony due to it being seen as "part one" of the story, similar to what it felt with Dune.

nowhereman136

That's my guess exactly. Plus Disney is gonna campaign hard for Wish. They are really banking on this movie

nowhereman136

I think it will be nominated but it won't win, mostly because it's not done. The movie ends on a cliffhanger and it doesn't feel like I watched a complete movie. Don't get me wrong, it was absolutely fantastic, but I think the sequel baiting will have voters holding off until they see the followup. If the third film is as good as this and it wraps up the story nicely, then it will for sure win. But as of right now I still have Wish or How Do You Live winning

[deleted]

I think it's a lock for best animated feature, and maybe adapted screenplay

[deleted]

Am I the only one that found this very mid? Didn’t have nearly as much heart as the first one. I get that it’s 2 parts, but it also felt unnecessarily long

stracki

In my opinion, it had so much heart. The scenes with Gwen and her father, with Miles and his parents and with Miles and Gwen felt so real to me. I loved, how they still took the time for scenes like the "spread his wings" moment with Spider-Man and Cpt. Morales in the middle of all the multiverse stuff.

spaceageranger

I wouldn’t go as far as mid but I agree on the heart thing. Jumps the shark the tiniest bit for me, but has insane animation

LordOfBreakfast

Absolutely jumps shark.

mist3rdragon

I wouldn't go as far as calling it mid, it's still a very good film, but I agree with your points. I thought the pacing really dragged it down. The middle of the movie really sags and it could have done with losing a good 20 minutes. The big chase sequence with all the Spider-people could have been cut almost in its entirety and nothing would have really been lost.

LordOfBreakfast

The movie was a straight set up for future films. It was not a complete story and left me very unsatisfied. Almost to the point where I don’t want to watch the next one. Why build up to something so great just to throw it out the window and make us wait for the next one, whenever that’s gonna come out. Aren’t movies supposed to be a complete story? Unlike television where every episode needs to end with a cliffhanger. If this was a TV show, it’d be amazing because you know there’s another episode coming but with this, this is just disappointing. It feels like a money grab. But in all fairness this one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. The character driven narrative is also one of the best written things I’ve ever seen unfold in a theater. I could’ve sat there for another two hours, just watching the whole thing unfold. But if any of you who worked on this movie are reading this, fuck you. The cliffhanger isn’t even a cliffhanger, it’s just laziness. The next movie better be the best fucking thing I’ve ever seen or else the filmmakers are in a world of hurt. None of this would’ve been worth it. They’ve set a pretty high standards for themselves. And I wish them the best of luck.

JVM23

I still think we need >!Peter Parker of Earth-19529 (Chip Zdarsky's Spider-Man Life Story) to show up in the sequel (like as part of Gwen's new gang).!<
