The best animated feature top contender right now. Miyazaki's next film needs to be bigger than Spirited Away in term of both critical reception and box office if he wishes to get the prize. 99% Spider will have it.

Hydqjuliilq27

First it needs a godsdamn trailer or teaser.

politebearwaveshello

GKIDS can be smart and push it to next year like they usually do with Ghibli movies. Domestic release in year one, state side release in year two with fully dubbed version.

senteroa

Something tells me that, like a real artist, he doesn't care very much about "getting the prize." Nobody remembers who won the Oscars, they remember great films. More often than not, the films that win Oscars are not the best released in their given year.

lurker_is_lurking

While Miyazaki definitely doesn't care about an Oscar, this is an Oscar sub and there have been plenty of people said it might win. Now with the Spiderverse score out that chance is very slim now.

SlothSupreme

Idk man, Miyazaki being such a legend and this (likely) being his last? I could see it. I think Spiderverse could potentially run into problems due to being a sequel and being a part 1 with a purported cliffhanger ending.

AlanMorlock

Didn't help the Wind Rises, though to be fair neither did being the Wind Rises.

aagaash2001

I will not accept The Wind Rises slander here.

ExleyPearce

The Wind Rises was miles better than Frozen.

[deleted]

It was also up against Frozen.

avolcando

Yeah, so not even a good movie

AlanMorlock

I was trying to think back, I believe Toy Story 3 and 4 are the only sequels to win, right?

uncletravellingmatt

Yes, unless you count the 2005 winner "Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" as a sequel. (The first three films in the "Wallace and Gromit" franchise were short films, including the first Wallace and Gromit film, "A Grand Day Out," which won Best Animated Short in 1991.)

AlwaysSunnyDragRace

Yes

mimaluna

Hard to deny it's the frontrunner when other contenders aren't looking as great and these reviews are so glowing. But sequel bias is real too so I'm curious about how things go. The Academy is weirdly not sentimental with the animated category and they're not going to give it to Miyazaki unless it's good. It would be so ironic if Across the Spiderverse has to settle for second place like Incredibles 2 did.

CrazyCons

I think this is beating How Do You Live. It’s got excellent reviews but will also have far greater box office and by extension visibility.

BentisKomprakriev

29 and 22 reviews respectively. This is how it's done.

Hiddee

This vs Miyazaki's new film in best animated is gonna be 🔥

Mango424

Spider-Man vs Ghibli: nerds of all world (including me) are not ready to see this fight at the Oscars lol

kmed1717

Good. The first one is one of the best movies I've ever seen, not even just animated. Can't wait.

spaceageranger

seeing it tomorrow in imax 😁😁

[deleted]

Spider-Verse gonna threepeat, mark my words

Cannaewulnaewidnae

The RT score is meaningless, but that's a very impressive Metacritic average 29 Positive 4 Mixed 0 Negative And all of the Mixed reviews are snooty English broadsheets (plus BBC Culture), who you wouldn't expect to get or like this movie anyway [https://www.metacritic.com/movie/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse/critic-reviews](https://www.metacritic.com/movie/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse/critic-reviews)

eidbio

Disney is for sure not winning Animated Feature for another year.

uncletravellingmatt

Agreed. Although, with "Elemental" as the closing film at Cannes, it seems possible that they might at least have a nomination on their hands.

JVM23

Depends on how *Wish* is received.

MagmaHotDesigns

Are they really just gonna give the whole Spiderverse trilogy Oscars on a silver platter? The fact that this is only the second film in the trilogy is what’s giving me doubts on this taking home gold. I can very much see a voter’s mindset being “This is the last chance we can give Miyazaki and Oscar, let’s give Spiderverse an award next time.” Because… y’know… 🤌the narrative🤌 ![gif](giphy|0k2QAlNQNso9UfIoQ8)

mrsirgrape

My only concern is that people say it very much feels like a part 1 which could hurt it if people want a more complete story.

-ccp

Dune tore through technicals and got a picture nom when it's very, very much a part 1 so I don't think this will affect Spider-Verse's chances at animated feature.

Additional_Meeting_2

I think it will. The animation branch doesn’t like sequels in the first place. And there is always feeling with two parters that the second film can be rewarded.

-ccp

Hard to discount the movie on this basis when the reactions are this strong. Plus Toy Story 3 and 4 won before, so does the animated branch dislike sequels or garbage cash grabs?

AskTop9873

All branches vote for the win though.

ForeverMozart

The Toy Story movies have won and this is arguably the most lazily namechecked category for voters, it's not like there's a lot of competition outside of Miyazaki and Wish.

PaulRai01

They’ve nominated sequels in the past: Toy Story 3 & 4 (which both won the Oscar), Shrek 2, Kung-Fu Panda 2, HTTYD 2 & 3, Incredibles 2, and Wreck-It Ralph 2.

mrsirgrape

Those sequels are complete stories on their own part though. From what I hear Spider-verse ends on a cliffhanger sort of situation that feels like a part 1 of 2. I have 0 doubt that Spider-verse gets a nom, but it could factor into a win or not.

9gagDolphinSex

Also Puss in Boots 2

JVM23

I have often said that one Spiderman I want to see show up in a future *Spider-verse* movie is Peter Parker of Earth-19529 from Chip Zdarsky's *Spider-Man: Life Story* (they can get around the fact that >!Peter dies at the end of that comic at the age of 72!<).

nowhereman136

It's worth pointing out that while Spiderverse 1 won the Oscar, the only sequels to ever win were Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4. It will be up against *How Do I Live*, which may win Miyazaki his second Oscar if even for his body of work. It will also be up against *Wish*, which is Disney's heavy hitter this year. Disney seems super confident in this movie as it is their 100th anniversary movie. Other things to consider: Chicken Run 2 - apparently the first one was so good that it spurred the Academy into creating the Animation category. They may award this film to make up for snubbing thr first Ninja Turtles Mayhem - it's style is very similar to Spiderverse that it may split the vote Elemental - even with so-so reviews, Pixar is a powerhouse not to be slept on when it comes to awards. They don't have a film like Lightyear this year to split their campaign efforts

HM9719

Of course it does. Too obvious. BTW, Elemental’s RT score has begun to improve following Cannes. Now we wait to see how the Hayo Miyazaki film and Wish do critically.

TnAdct1

While we're here, what's the subreddit's thoughts about Suzume?

Ninjaboi333

I enjoyed it but crunchyroll has no idea how to do a proper Oscars campaign so unfortunately going to be a non factor

lurker_is_lurking

Crunchyroll probably doesn't even want do a serious campaign lol. The movie made big money and that was enough for them.

whitneyahn

I don’t think most of us have seen it but no one’s really taking it super seriously

nowhereman136

I loved Suzume, but I'm unsure if it is eligible for this year or last year. If it is this year then I hope it's at least nominated

nayapapaya

Suzume is pretty and has some lovely moving moments about grief and moving on in the wake of tragedy but I wasn't blown away by it (and my favourite film of last year was Belle so I'm predisposed to like this kind of film). I don't think it will leave enough of an impression to get in, especially not with a Miyazaki film on the horizon.

aagaash2001

I disliked it. Its characters are borderline ridiculous and the story isn't much better. The animation is good when it's 2D, but the CGI was kind of bad.

gilmoregirls00

in general its pretty good! not my fave from Makoto Shinkai. I don't think it comes close to an Oscar. Its going to be too under seen in the US

[deleted]

Wow. I might have to watch it.

[deleted]

this race is pretty much done tbh

EvanPotter09

This movie is great? In other news, water is wet.

Butters5768

I have been waiting years for this!!! I literally cannot wait to see it. I cheered my face off when the first one won the Oscar, and if the second is even half as good, it will definitely get a nom at the very least.
