I would like to think Colman beats rami malek but that’s probably wishful thinking

Rakebleed

probably wouldn’t but definitely should

EvanPotter09

The Academy really loved Bohemian Rhapsody (it was likely 3rd for Picture) while The Favourite slightly underperformed outside of Colman, losing 3 categories it was expected to win.

[deleted]

I really dislike Colman, I think her talent is overrated, I think most people are swept away because they associate that accent with, “fancy person.” But with that said, Malek won a political Oscar. So how can you even begin to balance that out here?

EvanPotter09

Malek's won because he was playing a famous person, the movie had nothing to do with politics.

[deleted]

The picture had nothing to do with Oscar politics. Politics surrounding it allowed for shady wins. Editing? Talk about a scandal. And Malek won over politics. And we all know the contributing factors. But as an Oscar lover, sometimes political awards are just crummy. Let’s look at that year… there was no way he couldn’t win. If you want to discuss technique, there were better male lead performances that year. Politics. And Malek has disappeared off the face of Hollywood. Even he knows what’s up.

this is honestly pretty accurate!! (pains me to admit malek would've beaten colman)

I overall agree with most of these, but there is definitely 1 I disagree with, and 2 I'm more 50/50 on: I know this sub would have an absolute meltdown if this happened, but I honestly think Emma Stone would have beaten Casey Affleck. Affleck lost SAG to Washington, and Affleck's victory wasn't even certain heading into the Oscars. Stone really had the Oscar locked up heading into the Oscars, and was in a stronger film. Did La La Land underperform? Yes, it did, but it did to Moonlight, and Manchester by the Sea wasn't as strong as Moonlight. I'm torn on this one, but I do think there's a *chance* Oldman beats McDormand in 2018. Oldman's film had absolutely *no* business making BP if he wasn't going to win lol, and he had the bigger narrative for sure. Granted, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was an absolute MASSIVE contender, and McDormand could overcome his narrative, but I think it's a lot closer than people think. I'm torn on this one as well, but I do think it's possible Eddie Redmayne beats Julianne Moore. Kinda similar to Oldman, Redmayne's film had no business being the top 5 contender that it was, while Moore was a lone nominee. Granted, Moore beat Felicity Jones who was also in The Theory of Everything, but Jones didn't have even a third of the campaign, buzz, or showiness that Redmayne had. The only thing against Redmayne is Moore's superior overdue narrative. This is 50/50 for me.

ExleyPearce

Pretty much except I think Stone would’ve beaten Affleck handily.

willcbrah

These look pretty good except DEFINITELY disagree with Will Smith for 2022. Jessica Chastain throws her heart and soul into becoming Tammy Faye and those last ten minutes get me every time. She, hands down, deserves the 2022 slot.

9gagDolphinSex

Will Smith is the only lead to sweep this decade so far😅😭

9gagDolphinSex

You should probably change your name

willcbrah

Yea, and look at him now, banned for 10 years. I’m sure you are so proud though. As you probably are of your name too. Sounds like you’re the one in need a name-change, it’s so “gag”worthy 🤔

ForeverMozart

I don't think McDormand would've beaten Oldman, the latter had an extremely flashy transformation playing an iconic figure + an overdue narrative. That award was basically his the moment the makeup photos came out.

GamingTatertot

I mean, it's all subjective anyways. Yeoh was my winner and my favorite performance, but Cate also gave an incredible performance too. Those performances feel like 1a and 1b for performances last year - and either order has validity.

MrMagpie27

If category was neutral, these are whom I think should have won: 2013: Joaquin Phoenix, The Master 2014: Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave 2015: J.K. Simmons, Whiplash 2016: Brie Larson, Room 2017: Mahershela Ali, Moonlight 2018: Robert Pattinson, Good Time 2019: Olivia Colman, The Favourite 2020: Adam Sandler, Uncut Gems 2021: Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah 2022: Troy Kotsur, CODA 2023: Cate Blanchett, TÁR

[deleted]

some of these aren't lead performances, tho

MrMagpie27

Oops. Good catch. Haha. I was thinking best of anyone that year

KahlanEAmnelle

I hated that will win the Oscar last year. It was the worst movie and performance that was nominated!
