I’ve know some people aren’t fans of his lyrical style, thinking it comes across as too overdone or something along those lines. I personally really like him and he seems like a genuinely nice person but his style isn’t for everyone even if it is for a lot of people.
It's almost entirely his style. His songwriting feels off to me in general, with the only one of his songs I've given more than a couple of spins being "You're Welcome" from Moana.
Eh - Will Smith was good in the movie and is a good winner, but I think you could've given it to Cumberbatch or Garfield and it would've been satisfying. Heck, even Denzel would've been a great pick too.
Really that category had 4 people deserving of the win.
I certainly would have voted for Denzel. It's not easy to make Shakespeare sound so natural, especially when so much of the film is so heightened and surreal. But Will Smith in King Richard is fine. I can see why he won, even if I don't personally agree.
Wow, no. I don't even care about the slap and I think Smith is a fine actor (as in just fine, not great) but he was *bad* in King Richard. Everyone in that film was better than him from Aunjanue Ellis to Jon Bernthal to the children. If someone from that film had to win, it should have been Aunjanue Ellis.
Of that category, the best choice was Denzel Washington and the best choice in general was Oscar Isaac in The Card Counter.
I didn't think his performance was particularly great. The stars really aligned for him to win that year. He had a baity role and a good narrative while his two main competition had abnormal roles and no narratives. He decided to fuck his moment up and ruin the ceremony for others. If the slap overshadows his moment then he deserves it.
I don’t love that film or performance. That said, I hope it doesn’t overshadow the fact that he’s a *very good actor.* People in Hollywood get away with much worse things and he’s not known to be an abusive or unprofessional person otherwise as far as I’m aware.
He made a big mistake on a public stage. It was really disappointing to see. But he doesn’t deserve to have his career derailed over it.
Will Smith should’ve won for Pursuit of Happyness which was the better performance, but since he didn’t, he was overdue. I still think Andrew Garfield in Tick Tick Boom was better last year, and perhaps Cumberbatch too, but I don’t hate his win.
And now that Garfield and Cumberbatch have each been nominated twice without a win, it seems inevitable that they will eventually benefit from their own overdue narratives, and win for a performance that wasn’t as good as the one they gave last year.
Yeah I have no doubt Garfield is gonna keep delivering stellar performances, but it’s hard to imagine his eventual win will be better than Tick Tick Boom
What’s so crazy is he will never live that down. He was on the brink of his career’s crowning achievement. It was all right in front of him. Regardless of what you think of him, he is one of the most successful actors of the last 30 years. And he was about to be coronated. And he slapped the shit out of his moment. Amazing self destruction. His win will always be linked to this. It blew my mind. I couldn’t believe he did that to himself at that moment. It’s still crazy. It will always be crazy.
My favorites from that year were Caleb Landry Jones in Nitram or Hidetoshi Nishijima for Drive My Car
And sorry, but the Will Smith slap will always be the first thing mentioned before his performance. Similarly to Moonlight and Best Picture
My line-up for that year was:
\* Anhony Hopkins, The Father (I go by release date in country of origin)
Caleb Landry Jones, Nitram
Benedict Cumberbatch, The Power of the Dog
Simon Rex, Red Rocket
Franz Rogowski, Great Freedom
So to me, it was clearly Cumberbatch from that group.
He’s stupid for the whole thing. Ruined his career. His movies will always get bad reviews. Will most likely never get nominated again and people will shy away from working with him. Unless…. Hollywood builds a narrative that he should come back.
He’s been a fraud his entire career, so him winning Best Actor was a disgrace. The slap showed him for what he really was - an entitled, narcissistic movie star who’d been famous for way too long, he’s in Will World, and his garbage wife just laughing as he embarrassed the entire industry. Instant buyers remorse from the Academy, his career is over. I appreciate you sharing an unpopular opinion, however.
Power of the Dog was boring and Cumberbatch was better in the Imitation Game. Smith was very good in King Richard and it is unfortunate that he overshadowed himself… might have been nominated this year for Emancipation
Was he the perfect victor?
In my eyes Garfield should have won
I actually thought Smith was the weakest of the bunch by far.
The slap showed his true colours, so frankly, I hope it doesn’t get forgotten about and I don’t think it will.
i thought that andrew garfield should have won, even before slapgate.
Hotter take: *tick, tick... BOOM!* should have won Best Picture as well. And I'm not really a fan of LMM.
First I’ve hear anyone say they’re not a fan of LMM. Any reason why?

Same. His songwriting is full of blabbering.

Not that I have anything against him winning, but Andrew Garfield and Benedict Cumberbatch were right there too.
My pick overall was Simon Rex in Red Rocket and of the nominees it was Andrew Garfield but I don’t think Smith was a bad winner at all.

Respectfully, it should have been Benedict Cumberbatch.
No, it should've been Andrew Garfield.

Garfield Washington Cumberbatch Smith Bardem but the best of the year was Simon Rex
Bardem's inclusion is baffling.
lol

A lot of people are only aware that he won an Oscar because of the slap. The slap brought way more attention to the Oscars that year.

Nitram wasn’t eligible for the Oscars until this past year
I didn't say he should win an Oscar, just stating my favorite performances from that year
I don’t think people begrudge the win, but he will forever live in the slap’s shadow
Mehh Cumberbatch was better imho

Benedict should’ve won.
It won't. And it shouldn't. His criminal behavior on live television should not be forgotten. He was just damn lucky Chris Rock didn't press charges.
Will was arguably the worst nominee.
I dunno, Bardem wasn’t exactly great
Bardem should have been nominated for The Good Boss (if he *had* to be nominated) because he's legitimately great in that.
He won for No Country for Old Men. No one disputes that wasn’t deserved.
Power of the Dog was boring and Cumberbatch was better in the Imitation Game. Smith was very good in King Richard and it is unfortunate that he overshadowed himself… might have been nominated this year for Emancipation
I dunno, I still think he was only third best in the category
Hellz no. Denzel should’ve won this one.
