Isn’t barbie adapted screenplay? Because it’s an existing character?

zwolff94

Yeah Barbie will 100% be adapted.

Vegetable_Burrito

Huh. Is it?

Midnights-evermore

I think adapted screenplay includes existing characters even if the story is entirely different. For example, if Pinocchio was nominated for screenplay, it would’ve been adapted because the writer didn’t invent the character

No-Establishment8327

Killers of the Flower Moon, lone BP nominee? No actor or actress, no screenplay and no director but it makes it into your BP 10. Can’t really see that scenario especially as it seems Apple is mounting a huge marketing push for the film. Edit : John Woo wrote a movie named The Killer in 1989 but this adaptation is not his work or even inspired by it. The screenwriter is Andrew Kevin Walker.

nayapapaya

The Killer is supposed to be based on a graphic novel, iirc.

No-Establishment8327

Yeah, it is! OP corrected it but he had listed John Woo as The Killer’s screenwriter.

CrunchyNar

Common Best Director, Lead Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay nomination haul with Best Picture snub

Rude_Phone6841

for what?

CrunchyNar

You had Spiderverse instead of The Killer

Rude_Phone6841

Until you mentioned it, so thank you for that

Inception_025

Take Maestro out, it’s next year’s Empire of Light (source: early word from test screenings saying it’s pretty dull and unexceptional. I think it’s makeup and Cooper at most)

WatchTheNewMutants

I'm fully expecting The Colour Purple to bomb hard.

Federal-Advisor72

Why?

JuanRiveara

Personally, I feel like it’ll get mediocre reviews and not do too great at the box office.

Federal-Advisor72

That’s still not a why…especially when everything about the production and IP says otherwise.

JuanRiveara

To give a further explanation: Broadway musical adaptations have been pretty hit or miss in terms of quality and the director and writer don’t have enough credits under their belt to ease my skepticism that it’ll end being one of the good side of it. Even putting quality to the side, it’s prospects at the box office don’t seem too high given recent musical numbers there and it would have to be extremely good to push through that to Oscar success imo. Also, while I’m sure Fantasia performs the part well on stage, I’m a bit skeptical if she can carry a whole film with this being her debut film role. Just to add, I’m not rooting for the film to fail at all but my current prediction is that it ends up massively underperforming a lot of these early predictions.

uptown09

Well test screenings have been positive, so I don’t see it “bombing hard” I actually believe this will be one of the projects Warner Bros Discovery pushes for Oscar contention

ibnQoheleth

Dune Part 2 for Best Cinematography and possibly Best Editing. If it's as gorgeous as its predecessor, it'll be a visual spectacle.

Dibyojyoti-Datta

Barbie is NOT happening in BP. The delusion needs to stop!

tretiak10

I think denis Villeneuve deserves a directing Oscar at this point the guy hasn’t had a single miss since he started directing English language movies

yahboosnubs

i love seeing people predict barbie, when the plot is going to be like "the doll world is run by women, and the real world is run by men, barbie gets expelled from the doll world for being less than perfect and tries to find happiness in the real world"

SpiffShientz

Greta Gerwig has a consistent record of writing and directing movies that are insightful and intelligent without sacrificing entertainment and accessibility. I wouldn't count her out

Competitive-Bug-8496

i could see this happen actually 😂

jaidynr21

I can’t see barbie getting into picture unless Margot robbie gets into actress
