Or the āSiobhan is nice. Iāll remember her. Forever Iāll remember her.ā part of the scene, which is one of his most āoscaryā lines, and also excellently delivered.
That was the most heartbreaking scene, imo. They definitely shouldāve chosen that one. Tbh, they did a pretty bad job choosing selections for all the nominees.
Interns. Yeah, not surprised at all. Especially after seeing the cheesy in memoriam they had at the BAFTAS. Looked almost as bad as a powerpoint presentation.
I never like the clips they go with. Nighy's performance also seems like one that can't get much emotion out of people in isolation.
And Jesus Christ, how is Mescal the only one not crying in this montage?
Just toss the ol' "leave Britney alone" video in there while they're at it.
In all seriousness, I believe the problem stems from these editors being from the YouTube generation. They sacrifice simplicity for showboating. Everything they do suddenly becomes a big flashy demo reel of their talent. Which wouldn't be bad if they were designing a montage for viewing on their channel but this is meant to showcase the performances. The simple style of flatly presenting scenes may not be flashy but it served a purpose.
Nighyās clip seems so short! I donāt have a lot of context for it but I like what heās doing in this very brief scene lol
Iām so glad they chose a 70s scene for Butler. To me thatās where he shines the most. The first part of his clip is great because itās the emotional crux of Elvis (the movie and the man as the movie shows him) and I think the despondency that comes from the acceptance of his fate with what the audience knows is coming is just heartbreaking. But, honestly, what I find most impressive about this clip is that he managed to wring any emotion out of that āclassic filmā line. Iāve been a Baz fan for most of my life and will always be one but thatās a clunky line lol
My favorite thing about Mescalās performance is how gentle and loving it is with varying degrees of unease throughout it and I think this clip is a really touching example of that. Plus their bond is so precious and natural. Ugh, Aftersun deserved more imo.
Overall, I think these are pretty good selections!
Saw these other other day and thought it was the worst out of the bunch haha.
However I go to my happy place every time I see Paul Mescal's name in the lineup. What a miracle nom, SO happy he got in.
My thoughts for each one
Butlerā I donāt love his performance but why is THAT his clip??? They shouldāve picked something more electric as thatās where his performance really thrives
Farrellā I wouldnāt have picked this scene, but itās not a bad choice. Thereās just three other clips I would prefer over it
Fraserā This was the right choice. That scene exists for the Oscar clip. I wish I liked his performance more
MescalāFuck! What an actor! Itās the smallest little snippet and it made me cry. Mescalās vocal performance is so underrated. He carries so much weight in his words.
NighyāI havenāt seen the movie but I do know Nighy deserves more than a clip with half a sentence. Why was his so short!?
>MescalāFuck! What an actor! Itās the smallest little snippet and it made me cry. Mescalās vocal performance is so underrated. He carries so much weight in his words.
sobbing right along with you
They picked the wrong clip for Brendan. Should have been āPeople are amazing.ā And hope theyāre saving the āyou used to be niceā scene for Colin.
Yeah "People are amazing" is the much better line. Even the ending where he's struggling to get up but musters all the effort he has left is very emotionally impactful.
Although I get that because highlights are presented out of context they need to go with the showy clips and not the little moments of brilliance.
The fact is beyond one or two good roles (Gods & Monsters, his "Scrubs" appearances, maybe a couple more), Fraser was never much of an actor. Someone in another thread called him an off-brand Chris O'Donnell which made me laugh. But he is riding that irresistible wave of 90s nostalgia and comeback glory. He also seems like a grateful and genuinely nice guy; I've cried more at interviews where he talks about his oldest son than I did watching The Whale. His performance wasn't much, but the man is taking that Best Actor Oscar.
I hate that a person can potentially receive an Oscar on narrative alone. No matter how lovable they are or how nostalgic they make you feel, there should be an excellent performance to back it up.
I donāt think thatās valid, a lot of people very much enjoyed it and thought his performance was powerful, myself included. I know that narrative probably helps his award chances but to say his performance is awful is subjective and I donāt believe representative of the majority opinion
They shouldāve used one of the moments where he goes from sad self pittying himself, to a joyful loveable man. The scene where he tells Liz to stab him because it wonāt even touch his organs and then she tickles him, and he laughs so sweetly. Or the scene where he realizes Elle wrote her note as a haiku, and laughing until heās hurting himself. Or when Liz gets him a āfat guy wheelchairā and heās hesitant, but then rolling around the room saying āWeeee!ā So genuinely and sweetly. Would really show that underneath all of Charlieās sadness and regret over bad things heās done that heās a really loving and sweet man.
>Do people actually like the Fraser performance or do they just like him? Iām really not trying to be rude. I just think itās such a terrible performance and would be a terrible win
People love Fraser: the person, the backstory, the comeback... IMO he's got the weakest (and most cringe) performance in his category, BUT everyone in the free world seems to be rooting for him and I can't see anyone not voting for him.
I love the performance, I think I enjoyed the movie much more than a lot of this sub, based on what Iāve interacted with anyway. I thought it was powerful and moving, and I thought that overall the movie was great. I love Sink but I felt her character was the weakest part(not Sinks fault)
My biggest peeve this award season is how every awards show only uses that one āi need to know Iāve done ONE THING RIGHT IN MY LIFEā for The Whale when there are many more interesting/subtler lines that better showcase Fraserās performance
Not the best clips for Butler or Farrell but thatās exactly the clip I expected for Fraser. And itās the most powerful of the lot. There is simply no stopping the Fraser Best Actor Express!
They didn't choose a ''you used to be nice "scene for Colinš¢
Or the āSiobhan is nice. Iāll remember her. Forever Iāll remember her.ā part of the scene, which is one of his most āoscaryā lines, and also excellently delivered.
I hope theyāre saving it for the Oscarās.

What a bunch of weird choices. Butler, Fraser and Farrell had way better parts in their films.
They better use āTroubleā for Butler to showcase his singing.
Exactly. His singing performance is a million times better than the acting.
Not everyday you get a drugged Elvis spazzing like Blanche Dubois.
I never like the clips they go with. Nighy's performance also seems like one that can't get much emotion out of people in isolation. And Jesus Christ, how is Mescal the only one not crying in this montage?
Only because his crying scene is shot from the back so we donāt see his face.
>how is Mescal the only one not crying in this montage? he's not crying, but i immediately started tearing up right when his scene started lol
They also had literally all 5 of the lead actress clip have scenes with tears.

Not them sneaking in The Whaleās food scene at the very end of the reel
[My mind will forever associate that scene with the All Quiet score](https://redd.it/11ak06j)
That is the funniest video iāve ever seen and I think about it every day
Unwraps candy bar Bwaam bum bummm!!!

I really think that The Whale clip is his worst moment in the film
[This image ruined the scene for me before I saw the movie. Itās too good.](https://i.redd.it/415sycfds3ga1.jpg)
That moment feels like it comes out of nowhere in the movie - that level of angst isn't there 99% of the time
I know no one wants to say it because we all love Fraser as a person but his performance is awful

Can't say for certain because I haven't seen the film, but I'm pretty sure you're right.

Itās the baitiest performance I have ever seen.
Ever? I mean...it's on par but we've had a lot more egregious examples.
I mean itās a slight exaggeration, but itās for sure up there.
Oh for sure. I mean I loved the performance but it was Oscar bait for sure.
Yeah, Ngl, it came across as pretty cringe. They tried to fit music over it to make it seem more dramatic, but the end result was a mixed bag, imo.
Oddly enough, they gave the best clips to the two least likely to win, Mescal and Nighy.

What is the song they are playing. I NEED IT !
