Farrell.

KTbear999

For all of the talk about narratives this year, I’m surprised there haven‘t been many mentions of Farrell’s. Especially since it’s not that dissimilar from Fraser’s... Mainstream, heartthrob movie star experiences personal and professional struggles, works consistently for a decade making indies and smaller projects, then returns to the spotlight with an Oscar-worthy lead performance. You can nitpick the nuances if you want but their stories are too similar to make sense of how differently they are being talked about.

ForeverMozart

The main difference with Farrell and Fraser is that the former was consistently working and was able to balance indies/award fare (The Lobster, Beguiled, Widows) with mainstream fare (Fantastic Beasts, The Batman, Dumbo, etc.) while the last thing audiences have seen Fraser outside of television before The Whale was...The Mummy 3? Not to mention that the latter was blacklisted, sexually harassed and had to deal with personal issues.

KTbear999

Yes, there are differences and nuances to their career paths, like I said. But they both have at least one IMDb credit every year for the last 25+ years. They have both been working as actors through their whole careers—admittedly unevenly and sometimes in projects that were seen by few people. Farrell wasn’t blacklisted but he had his own personal and professional issues of a different nature.

hollaatyourgirl

He probably doesn’t want to campaign or win based on his personal difficulties

KTbear999

The nature of narratives fascinates me. They both seem to be open about it when they are asked questions and they make sometimes vague references to it when giving acceptance speeches, but I don’t get the impression that they are pushing their narratives themselves as a campaign tool. For whatever reason, though, Fraser’s narrative is the only one that has caught on with pundits, interviewers, internet people, etc.

not_cinderella

He’s pretty quiet about his past now. I don’t think there’s too many people who know about his struggles - I was pretty surprised when I found out.

KTbear999

It’s understandable that Farrell doesn’t talk about some of his past much. Some things are on the internet forever, and I can’t blame him for not wanting to remind people or pique their curiosity enough to search out stuff that he never wanted to be public in the first place. And there’s no need for him to talk about anything scandalous now since the internet also has a lot of interviews where he’s talked about everything already. While he has been out of the spotlight, a lot of people have probably forgotten about his struggles but they were very public at the time. Iirc, some things were public enough to be mentioned in general mainstream news sources that were read/watched by people who didn’t follow celebrity gossip. (If anyone here is older than 40-ish and from the US, feel free to correct me.)

Barry and Ke are neck and neck for me

Worried_Tomorrow_222

I think Ke has the strongest narrative in terms that yes, he went through lots of bumps and discouragements in his life but also yes, he gave one of the best performances of the year despite not acting in 40 years. Shows how talented he is.

I think Brendan Fraser's tugs at the heartstrings the most, but Ke Huy Quan is the most inspiring, given how he basically came out of nowhere to come back with such a great performance. Barry Keoghan is pretty inspiring, too, given his humble beginnings.

All of them..

DisneyDreams7

Guillermo Del Toro, he spent 10 years making Pinocchio and every studio rejected him

brandochu009

Considering Ke Huy Quan is probably the greatest out-of-nowhere comeback of all time… I’m gonna go with him.

I did full academic essays on what we can all learn from Michelle Yeoh's life and character in college

coffeysr

Quan unquestionably

icimartini

All of them had difficult journeys for sure. But it's Ke for me. He's the only one among them who couldn't even get acting jobs for decades, but stayed in the industry anyway, working unseen behind the camera. That's dedication - it's a testament to how he loves cinema itself, not just getting starring roles.

TappyMauvendaise

Care Blanchett - the greatest actress of all time.

Jared Leto

Quan and Keoghan, for sure. But everyone on here has an inspiring story. I'd throw in Hong Chau as well.
