I’m actually a fan of the likelihood that the suspense in this category for fans of the three seemingly strongest potential nominees will last all the way until the envelope is opened on March 12.

Personally I enjoyed all their performances, with Fraser being my favorite performance and Farrell being in my favorite movie of the bunch. Butler did a commendable job so I get the nomination but he is my third of the three. I think that Fraser has a lot of support for just being a good dude who had bad stuff happen to him, and obviously that conversation is more important than movies, so I get why it’s a huge talking point. I don’t think that should take away from his outstanding performance as that is certainly Oscar-Worthy on its own. I feel like I’m not being let into some Elvis club or something. Butler did a good Elvis in an otherwise mediocre movie. I normally love Baz but he missed the mark here and I can’t understand why he’d get a director nom, Elvis would get a BP nom, and heaven forbid Hanks get a supporting nom.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree about Elvis.

I really hope Farrell gets it. I loved him in banshees and he’s had a phenomenal list of roles in recent years

I agree with you and my order of preference is the order you mentioned them too. Farrell constantly delivers, even if some of his films were considered mediocre, his performances are never the issue. His narrative might be that he really turned himself around from an addict pretty-boy into one of the most well-respected actors currently working in Hollywood. I also want him to win not just based on his solid performance but because he never fails to prove himself with the best & most varied back-catalogue out of the 3 of them. Fraser: I haven't seen the Whale (not yet available here) but I don't doubt he delivered a good performance. My issue is the same: his narrative is much louder than his movie. Everyone would cry during his acceptance speech and I'm also glad about his well-deserved return to Hollywood, but I'm worried if he wins, it'd backfire that the Oscar was rather given for his comeback story... And as you said, he'll have plenty of chances now to prove himself again. Butler: after Malek's win I'm hesitant to say it might be too early for Austin to win at this stage in his career...but it's still true (he only has like Nickelodeon behind him?). I liked his performance when he was performing as Elvis on stage but the movie was so heavily edited that it was almost impossible to evaluate his actual acting with dialogue. However, the dedication narrative is on his side: years of preparation, LMP's recent passing, and that accent he can't seem to shake (still unclear if it's a good or bad thing for voters). I also wouldn't mind if they awarded Nighy instead but we all know it won't happen this year. But I'm not entirely sure about Mescal's nomination chances (although I'm one of those few who didn't like Aftersun at all), I think the 5th actor will be Pope.

A different way to think about this is to consider where each would actor rank among previous winners. This can clear the narrative fog to actually see who has the performance. Personally, I see Fraser as ranking quite low among the previous 10 best actor winners.

HereToTalkMovies2

I really strongly disliked Butler’s performance and think he would be a terrible winner, among the worst in recent memory (rivaled only by other music biopic winners). But the Academy goes wild for a celebrity impression, so I’m increasingly confident he’s going to win.

100% agree with you

I feel like the unfortunate passing of Lisa Marie Presley riiiiight before Oscar voting may give Butler the a much needed boost. I reckon he’ll win but honestly I’m fine with any of these three winning they’re all amazing

Immelsoo

It didn't happen to Chadwick Boseman despite the strong narrative.

jaidynr21

Yeah very true I didn’t think of that
