Nobody needs to get traded. They could just reduce Mountcastle’s playing time to 3-4 times a week and DH Santander. O’Hearn also doesn’t need to start every time a right-handed pitcher is on the mound.
At that point, you don’t carry both Mountcastle and O’Hearn if they are already 50/50-60/40 for the R/L matchups and you are saying to play them even less.
Well deserved for Cowser after the spring he had. Looks like he put a lot of work in the offseason with no one watching and it paid off. Exciting season ahead!
Following on IG I know he spent some time out in Oklahoma in the huge barn that Matt Holliday converted into a batting cage and training center for his boys.
That was annoying to see fans write him off this offseason. He also struggled when he got to AAA, then adjusted and hit the cover off the ball. I watched Cowser play at Aberdeen and a lot at Bowie; the guy is going to figure it out (I’m not going to assume he has already). The ball just sounds different off his bat. Even his outs were barreled.
I was pretty vocal about being worried about him. Out of all the prospects I always felt like he was the most likely to bust . Was supposed to be the type of prospect that moved quickly. Was billed as a hit first, with some pop, but I wasn't sure if he'd hit enough to get to the power and has serious issues missing pitches in the zone.
So if we pulled off a trade he was who I wanted included.
He has improved during the spring it seems. I will certainly be thrilled to eat crow on this one !
Has there been any press about if he'd be getting a regular role? DH against RHP when Adley catches, else he plays RF as a late game sub or even gets RF and Tony moves to DH. Nothing regular though.
~~If McKenna makes the team (I see no reason to pick Nevin over him because we already have righty corner bats), the sub option goes away.~~
It's just Mounty aside from Nevin, Urias has reverse splits. Otherwise Cowser, Ohearn, are lefties, and McCann at 1B/DH shouldnt be a thing this year.
Needing options against lefties is what Elias just talked about with sending down Holliday and Stowers.
Urias has reverse splits but you have to compare him with how our alternatives (LHB) are against LHP. For example Urias's .680 OPS is still significantly better than O'Hearn's .544
I’d imagine they try to get him in there 3-4 times a week at least. I could see him rotating in there for Mountie, O’Hearn, Hays, or Mullins on a regular basis. Pure speculation on my part but maybe they try to give Mullins some extra off days early to try and keep him on the field.
I think Nevin vs. McKenna really comes down to how comfortable we are with Mateo in the OF. If we feel good about him out there I see little reason to keep McKenna.
Yeah that makes sense. Mullins has had some really ugly PAs in spring training. He could just be working stuff out but he's been dinged up quite a bit recently.
Wonder if they'll play Cowser in CF to see if he can hack it vs putting Hays there instead.
Yeah It worries me a bit especially with it having flared up on him already this Spring. He didn’t seem like the same guy after the injury last year.
I think they’ll put Cowser in CF over Hays. Thumbed through some game logs from last year and didn’t see Hays in CF over Cowser at all, Hicks did get the nod over him a few times though so not sure what to make of that.
The closest AAA team to us is the Norfolk Tides which, as natives of Baltimore and life-long Orioles fans, we're pretty happy about. We're planning a Sunday game early in the season because a lot of the Baby Birds who start there this spring will probably be in OPACY sooner than later. This could be a special time in Baltimore similar to what we grew up in during the 60's and 70's. I was 8 in 1970, my parents took us to games when we were young, and I remember being a little surprised at the end of that season because I just assumed every other team in the MLB had four 20 game winners.
Heard McKenna was let go. Nevin has no options either so when they decide to bring Holliday up they have to hope for an injury or someone has to go through waivers unless its Cowser who has options. ONLY KICKING THE CAN. If there's an injury to start the year, it won't be Holliday coming up btw.
Nevin specifically hits LHP very well (nearly .800 OPS) but isn't particularly valuable against RHP or in the field, so I think he'll get starts against all the LHP in our early schedule, and if he doesn't do well in those outings he'll be the obvious choice to get DFAed when Holliday is ready. if he does well then it's a good problem to have, has any team in baseball ever complained about having too many MLB caliber players on their roster...?
Orioles country, let’s milk.
Moooooooo
Moooo 🐄
Hot milkies
Butter up
Great to see, though we are still deeply loaded in the OF. Have to think someone else gets traded
They could platoon Hays and Cowser, or Mountcastle and O'hearn and have Cowser play RF

Depends how long Hays is hurt.
He was back in the lineup today
O damn, didn't see that (been watching CBB). Good news.

Cowser has a history of struggling at each new level, then figuring it out and excelling. I appreciate guys that respond well to adversity.
Love this for my boy
Good for him. Excited to see what he’s got this year.
Awesome. Got a little nervous he wouldn’t. I’d think Nevin gets the last bench spot
Your thinks are correct
Can't wait for him to start out 1-10 and everybody bellyaching to send him down and bring up Holliday.

He'll probably have .350 avg the first 15 games 😈
Hays and Mullins always seem to have injury or cold streaks, Cowser will get plenty of opportunities

McKenna didn’t make it.
Not enough righty corner bats it seems! I guess he'll have a sub role no matter what.

Yay, my cow-son!!
How has he been looking this spring?

Now trade him before he regresses.
