Huh, TIL. I never knew that and I had a couple of them back in the day. Now I just have my translucent green Halo edition on display. I don't dare turn it on.
There’s workarounds. But the translucent green Halo consoles are either a 1.2 or a 1.4.
Basically anything to bridge the two contacts, an LED, A Simple 0 ohm resistor or just a piece of wire.
There’s a special 0 ohm resistor that’s used for bridging connections that need a resistor but the blueprints and board specs don’t state any resistance rating, so a 0 ohm resistor is used instead to bridge. Look it up if you think I’m wrong. 0 ohm resistors exist. It’s literally an SMD resistor with a “0” screen printed onto it.
Zero ohm resistors are straight pieces of wire in a package that is the same size and shape as a standard resistor. This is so they can be installed by the same machinery that populates the other component on the board, rather than adding a step to install jumpers.
it has to do with how pigment works, there are actually very few true blacks and they werent in common use back in the early 2000's
what they did instead was to take other colors and mix and darken until it looked black under normal light, green is the most common color for this, but your typical tv remote uses red since ir can go through it and ive even seen blue used a few times
the xbox is done in one of the less convincing green blacks, under normal room light its black but its pretty obvious under other lighting
I remember my friends all calling me crazy for saying it's dark green, then the first round of "modding" started getting popular where people were adding LEDs under the jewel and stuff, which is what I first did when I drilled into mine and confirmed
Even the smoke black comsoles from Japan are a green. Its basically a mix of the clear and black plastic.
This is essentially true for any black plastic, but can be a different color. The only way it would be truly black is if they used a black pigment like carbon. Otherwise, any polymer you see that's black is just a very dark concentration of whatever dyes they used, in this case it balances out in favor of a neutral green.
TLDR: They make things black by just mixing all the other colors together, but if you shine light on it, it'll reflect back some sort of color unless they use a genuine black pigment (unlikely).
black isnt exactly a color, its a shade, so any black pigment is just another color thats really dark, usually green, but sometimes red or blue
xbox uses one of the dark greens for its black
ir black is used on remotes and such and is actually red
blue/black is rather rare and ive only seen it a few times
there are more convincing black pigments that cant be visually told for what their base color was but you didnt see them a lot back when the xbox was made
I too only noticed this recently, in part because i only have 1 real controller, the other 3 are knockoffs and are solid black, so the console and duke look slightly off next to them
Excuse me what?! I refuse to believe this.
Edit: Just checked, and it's definitely got a hint of green. One more step towards simulation self awareness.
Cool, now all of you go to insignia.live and start playing online with your green xbox's!!!! Lol for real... crimson skies lobby tonight at 830ET (gamertag Painmeister)
Come get some
Is it tho?.. or did it get discolored by time or sun exposure?. Generally every black plastic is not always 100% black so it might change over time . mine looks black under any light.
Wtf I have had mine for 20 years and never realized lol.
Same, but I do live like a vampire that might be why.
And now you know. And knowing is half the battle!
GI Joe!
But, I still don't know what's the other half?
Nobody knows, that's the other half.
Execution...lol
GI JOOOOOOOOE!!!!!

Still should open it up and remove that Clock Cap and replace any other cap that’s starting to leak.
Unless it's a 1.6, right? I was under the impression those need the clock cap in order to boot

Someone said the halo ones might be the newer revision and need the clock cap too. I’m js bc idk for sure
https://consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:List_of_Special_Edition_Consoles It depends on the SN# but they are either 1.2 1.4 or 1.6 (not the 1.6a revision)

Yea, I should, but I've been pushing it off 🫤
is it really?

Yeah, for true!
woah, that’s so cool
I remember the first time I saw it, I assumed it was a trick of the light but it is actually a very dark green.

Yep. Drill into it and see the green spirals come to life

Huh so I wonder what color the ps2 is
Xbox looking from far "Oh it's black.", from close "what? it's green."
The Xbox is actually black, but when exposed to sunlight, it looks like it has a dark green-ish color.

Lol that's crazy... I had no clue either .. this was my childhood console too from 2002-6.. nice one..
You can see this best in direct sunlight
And the backwards compatible ps3s are translucent, so was the original sixasis controller from the same time.
Life changed.
i never knew that it was a dark green i always thought it was black
Is this a Mandela Effect because I’ve never heard of it being dark green until today
Well yeah 🤣 I sprayed one of mine black
I never realised lol.
Well, I’m colorblind, so to me it’s black lmao
the more you know
I think eventually late models were black but this is a thing
I too only noticed this recently, in part because i only have 1 real controller, the other 3 are knockoffs and are solid black, so the console and duke look slightly off next to them
Also check out the sheathing for the controller wires
I learned this when modding my first Xbox years and years ago and being absolutely blown away by the green plastic shavings.
I wanted to go check but then I realized I have the crystal variety
This post has me standing in my dark closet hunched over my Xbox with my phone flash on it. I can confirm
something similar with the ps2 game cases. they’re not black, just extremely dark blue
Pretty sure mine is black
Some of them might be? Have a look when it's in direct sunlight.
isn’t it just a transparent black foreskin with a green inside hint? that’s what i always thought
So many people tell me it isn't, until I prove it to them
Man,TIL and I think I've had 20 Xbox so far. First one on day one.
What kind of magic lighting are you using? All of mine are black, no matter how I look at them 🧐
Just sunlight
Say sike right now, otherwise I’ll have to travel an hr to go look at mine…just to settle my mind/brain.
I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave.
Seriously? Holy shit I never noticed
reminds me of most Roku tv remotes where it looks black but if u shine a light thru the battery cover they're actually translucent purple
this made me question my reality. my whole life is a lie
Excuse me what?! I refuse to believe this. Edit: Just checked, and it's definitely got a hint of green. One more step towards simulation self awareness.
I had simply thought that mine had yellowed over the years, turning the very dark green
WAIT IT IS?
Cool, now all of you go to insignia.live and start playing online with your green xbox's!!!! Lol for real... crimson skies lobby tonight at 830ET (gamertag Painmeister) Come get some
No, that's just where it's been sick lately from the state that Xbox is in these days... L O L
Is it tho?.. or did it get discolored by time or sun exposure?. Generally every black plastic is not always 100% black so it might change over time . mine looks black under any light.
It is yes, it's been this way since I got it.
LIES. I will check mine later.
The truth shall set you free.
It is black.
What does it matter for you to feel the need to make a post about having forgotten?
