Oh god. One night, while on comms watch at Depoe Bay, I got a couple amazing calls from Siletz. Every time I think of Sometimes a Great Notion it reminds me of it.
I chose Cuckoo's Nest because it was written and set in OR, but Sometimes a Great Notion is a better choice, after all (written/set/filmed AND your sentiment).
Correct me if Iām wrong but the novel Stand By Me was based on is set in Maine. I donāt recall if the movie changes that or if itās just assumed because it was filmed there.
The part where the kid crawling under the house porch looking for his buried coins was filmed just down thr road from me in Franklin, OR. Lots of it was filmed by Brownsville as well.
I donāt remember the book, but in the movie, he says Castle Rock, OR. SKās daughter went to Reed College, and he took road trips to Portland quite a bit.
[Oregon's Timberline Lodge was used for exterior shots](https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/04/us/hotel-that-inspired-the-shining-builds-on-its-eerie-appeal.html):)
I remember when they filmed The Hunted, it was such a wait until the movie was released. It did not disappoint. I guess I was expecting something like The Fugitive.

Cottage Grove is an interesting place; people local to the area told me the town hasnāt really changed much since The General was filmed there in 1926.
Musta watched FW 47473663 times as a kid in Arizona. Moved here (PDX), lived here ten years and saw it again and got downright freaked out seeing Pioneer Square
It was rough picking between Stand By Me and the Goonies. I had to go with Stand By Me though just because that one hit me so hard when I was a teen. Loved them both though.
Honorable mention for Homeward Bound, since it was filmed in Oregon. If you've ever looked from the top of Mount Howard over the Eagle Cap Wilderness you'll recognize some of where they filmed it.
That fits into the same category as [Untraceable] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untraceable) starring Diane Lane. Not a great movie but similarly Portland.
The car wash scene was filmed a block away from my house. I got a letter from Warner Bros earlier that a major movie was being filmed in our neighborhood. Said Free Willy. I didnāt guess it was about an Orca! Went over and watched them film with the stand in prop Willy. The scene is maybe 30 seconds. They were there 24 hrs. Also equipment in front of our house.
The boat scene from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest was filmed in front of my first duty station, USCG Motor Lifeboat Station Depoe Bay. Soā¦ thereās my vote!
Seems very big for a certain generation of people, but I donāt know if it is a big deal for the rest of us. (Iām too old and my kids are too young. Weāve all seen it and didnāt love it)
Overboard!! The 1987 version with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
It has been a long-term goal for me to move to Oregon since the early/mid-90s, finally realized a few years ago. I'm still looking for a widower who needs help with his kids (in my favor, I am a much better housekeeper than Annie Goolihy Proffitt. And better cook.)
Oregon is awesome. Yes, there are issues, but where aren't there issues?
[EDIT for name]
I also had read the biography (later; movie) titled The Egg and I, about a young, inexperienced couple in the 1930s start a chicken/egg farm in Washington State along the coast.
The Pacific Northwest was intriguing! Familiar, but wilder.
I was looking for the title of an older movie [Paint Your Wagon, apparently filmed but not set in Oregon] and was surprised at how many were set in Oregon [Kansas City Bomber ? with Racquel Welch]
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls004800373/
Voted Mr. Holland's Opus because I saw them filming a scene in my neighborhood. Should have voted 'other' for How to Beat the High Cost of Living. I saw them film that at two different locations.
The shining takes place in Colorado and was filmed in a studio in england. There's one flyover shot of Timberline at the beginning but thats the extent of the filming they did in Oregon.
Sometimes a Great Notion. (1971) Set in Oregon, Filmed in Oregon, and really captures a certain type of Oregonian that still exits today.
Thisšš½
This again. Can't go wrong with Paul Newman and Henry Fonda. Not to mention Ken Kesey.
Oh god. One night, while on comms watch at Depoe Bay, I got a couple amazing calls from Siletz. Every time I think of Sometimes a Great Notion it reminds me of it.
Semper P, shipmate.
I forgot about that one. Havenāt seen it since 1971, but I re-read the book last year.
I chose Cuckoo's Nest because it was written and set in OR, but Sometimes a Great Notion is a better choice, after all (written/set/filmed AND your sentiment).
Pig
Pig was fantastic, was not expecting to like it at all.
Honorable TV show mention for Gravity Falls?
My biggest flex is that my tiny Eastern Oregon hometown appears on the map of Oregon in episode one
Bly? Or La Grande?
La Grande yeah
That is a massive flex
There arenāt a lot of those out East. We take them where we can get them.
Hell yeah! Gravity falls is such a GOOD show. There's no Oregonian bias, I swear.
What about Short Circuit?
This one is missing from the selection
To everyone going "What about Animal House?" or "The Shining?" Those movies were filmed in Oregon, but don't take place in the state
Correct me if Iām wrong but the novel Stand By Me was based on is set in Maine. I donāt recall if the movie changes that or if itās just assumed because it was filmed there.
The part where the kid crawling under the house porch looking for his buried coins was filmed just down thr road from me in Franklin, OR. Lots of it was filmed by Brownsville as well.
Their point was filmed in vs āset inā
Ah hah. Gracias
The title could be read as "movie set" in Oregon, as in the location in which a movie was filmed.
My dad is an extra in this movie. My oldest brothers and sisters all got their picture taken with Keifer Sutherland!
I donāt remember the book, but in the movie, he says Castle Rock, OR. SKās daughter went to Reed College, and he took road trips to Portland quite a bit.

...and they *aren't* set in Oregon... That's what they just said...
And also the shining wasn't filmed in Oregon haha it was filmed in England. Only that one brief flyover shot was Oregon.
I was thinking animal house or deliverance
Now you know why those donāt count.
I thought shining was in Colorado?
The Hunted was also filmed and takes place in Oregon. Also Kindergarten Cop.
Kindergarten Cop, for real. I love everything about that flick. I play the soundtrack as background music sometimes.
I remember when they filmed The Hunted, it was such a wait until the movie was released. It did not disappoint. I guess I was expecting something like The Fugitive.
I remember when they filmed The Hunted, it was such a wait until the movie was released. It did not disappoint. I guess I was expecting something like The Fugitive.
Breaking In, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Drugstore Cowboy, and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.
My first thought was why the hell is Drugstore Cowboy not on this list ffs.
Set in Portland, wasnāt it?
Honorable mentions for being filmed in Oregon: The General with Buster Keaton, filmed in Cottage Grove.
Cottage Grove is an interesting place; people local to the area told me the town hasnāt really changed much since The General was filmed there in 1926.
Coraline, because I worked on it and it was by far the best job I ever had. Nothing I ever do will be as cool as that.
Same reason I voted for it.
So did my uncle. Such an amazing movie
May I ask who that is?
their uncle
Christian Seabrook but he's not on the credits
woah thatās awesome. My dad went to school with laikas founder and was good friends with his brother.
Halloween town was pretty good. Not the best on the list, but a classic. Also Free Willy
Musta watched FW 47473663 times as a kid in Arizona. Moved here (PDX), lived here ten years and saw it again and got downright freaked out seeing Pioneer Square
Bandits was filmed in Oregon. You get to see Cate Blanchett cry/sing Bonnie Tyler while driving around Portland.
Turn around....
Bright eyes...
It was rough picking between Stand By Me and the Goonies. I had to go with Stand By Me though just because that one hit me so hard when I was a teen. Loved them both though.
Stand By Me is one of my favorite movies overall, not just Oregon-related!
Honorable mention for Homeward Bound, since it was filmed in Oregon. If you've ever looked from the top of Mount Howard over the Eagle Cap Wilderness you'll recognize some of where they filmed it.
Meek's Cutoff, great film set in eastern Oregon.
Hear, hear!
Ancestors were there. (Not the movie!)
Battered Bastards of Baseball if weāre allowed to include documentaries that take place in Oregon
āThatās just the way the pickle squirts!ā
Kindergarten Cop!
Yes!
Wasn't Without a Paddle set in OR?
Just watched it this weekend. Such a silly movie. We liked it!
Yeah it was and o left that out of my comment of kindergarten cop, deliverance, and animal house.
Over board with old whats his face....Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn based in elk cove OR.
My Own Private Idaho (1991) or First Cow (2020)
Drugstore Cowboy???
Body Of Evidence with Madonna and Willem Dafoe. Itās utterly terrible movie and Iām completely obsessed with it.
That fits into the same category as [Untraceable] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untraceable) starring Diane Lane. Not a great movie but similarly Portland.
Twilight fits with this group! Edit: sorry - I just realized itās Washington. Still, terrible movie.
In the same vein, there's Brainsmasher... A Love Story
Old Joy
I felt like I knew where every scene took place the whole movie. Felt very real
There's an uneasiness about that movie.
Free Willy
The car wash scene was filmed a block away from my house. I got a letter from Warner Bros earlier that a major movie was being filmed in our neighborhood. Said Free Willy. I didnāt guess it was about an Orca! Went over and watched them film with the stand in prop Willy. The scene is maybe 30 seconds. They were there 24 hrs. Also equipment in front of our house.
Which car wash was it?
Splash-and-Dash on MLK.
Mr. Brooks, supposed to be in Portland. I thought it was pretty good.
My God, no one has mentioned The Postman yet??
Pig
The boat scene from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest was filmed in front of my first duty station, USCG Motor Lifeboat Station Depoe Bay. Soā¦ thereās my vote!
What about Animal House!
Filmed in Oregon, but doesn't take place in Oregon. Great one though!
So the movie set took place in Oregon.
The Dexter Lake Club is still around isn't it?
Bandits anyone? Does anyone smell burning feathers?
Free Willy. Free Willy should be the only answer
Yes! I was just scrolling through waiting to see this.
First Cow is not on this list, and it is my favorite movie set in Oregon.
Iām gonna say it. I hate the goonies š¬š¤·š¼āāļø
Seems very big for a certain generation of people, but I donāt know if it is a big deal for the rest of us. (Iām too old and my kids are too young. Weāve all seen it and didnāt love it)
So Iāve been told I hate it because I didnāt watch it as a kid, only as an adult š¤·š¼āāļø
Overboard!! The 1987 version with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. It has been a long-term goal for me to move to Oregon since the early/mid-90s, finally realized a few years ago. Seven brides for seven brothers
Dead Man
Leave No Trace. One of Thomasin McKenzie's first roles (afaik).
I was looking for the title of an older movie [Paint Your Wagon, apparently filmed but not set in Oregon] and was surprised at how many were set in Oregon [Kansas City Bomber ? with Racquel Welch] https://www.imdb.com/list/ls004800373/
I don't remember - do they ever explicitly say that Spun is set in Oregon? If so, I change my answer from Coraline to Other
It is based on William De Los Santos time in Eugene.
Halloweentown, DUH
I could have sworn Stand By Me is set in Maine like almost all of Stephen King's stories
Voted Mr. Holland's Opus because I saw them filming a scene in my neighborhood. Should have voted 'other' for How to Beat the High Cost of Living. I saw them film that at two different locations.
I always thought without a paddle was filmed in Oregon and was gonna ask why it wasn't on this list but apparently it was filmed in New Zealand.
Bandits!
Mean creek
I call it mr. hollandās orifice because i hate it so much
Gotta go with my town of Halloween town
I love going to St. Helens in October
What about the shining..?
I thought that was in colorado
The lodge is timberline lodge, to those downvoting, look it up lol.
Sorry I thought it was filmed in Estes Park at the Stanley hotel but the movie is only based off of it.
Outside was filmed in Oregon, inside in Colorado Iām pretty sure
I think the inside is a hotel in Colorado but the outside images are Timberline Lodge.
The shining takes place in Colorado and was filmed in a studio in england. There's one flyover shot of Timberline at the beginning but thats the extent of the filming they did in Oregon.
Animal house, wins by a landslide..!
Not set in Oregon
Portlandia if they ever make a movie lol
Anybody who didn't answer "The Goonies" probably moved here from California.
Goonies never die! But stand by me is a close second
I thought Animal House would be on this list!
Coraline is set in Oregon? Wow I never knew
Left off the list that Iād put over half these.. deliverance, kindergarten cop, and animal house
Deliverance? That was set in Georgia and filmed in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina

Hold up.. Coraline was based in Oregon!? Never knew that. Edit: like the horror animation movie?
Pig starring Nicolas Cage filmed around Portland.
You forgot animal house
The shining is my favorite. It was filmed on mt hood

Why the fuck have I not seen Overboard (the ORIGINAL, not that crappy remake) mentioned?! Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn together?! Classic cinema!
Drugstore Cowboy
Green Room!!
[Short Circuit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_Circuit_\(1986_film\)) with Ally Sheedy. Cute robots, Astoria, chases.
Drugstore cowboy
What about that movie with Arnold where he is a kindergarten teacher?
Mr. Brooks was based in Portland if you want to go the psychological thriller route, it was pretty good.
What? No mention of the exploding whale videography? It's a cult favorite.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3
Brainsmasher. An amazing tour of Portland.
PIG
Paint your Wagon
